This was old school Yahtzee. I almost feel sorry for the game's developers. It's obviously been a while since Yahtzee so expertly ripped a game to shreds. I wonder what he has been up to lately? Playing JRPG's no doubt!

Fun Fact: Ian Dorsch (the guy who wrote ZP's theme music) is credited as the composer for this game, Praey for the Gods. I even double checked IMDB to make sure it was the same guy. No joke, it really is! Small world, eh? 🌎

But oh-ho, Yahtzee, there WAS a parachute in Shadow of the Colossus! It was just gated behind the time trials and/or a difficulty setting, iirc. One of the last little nuggets they threw at you too. Of course, that meant you probably wouldn't play with it much since you've already effectively played the game through like 3 times over, but it meant you can finally jump off cliffs or the secret rooftop garden and survive.

@@JABRIEL251 cause it's fun? it's not like it fucked the game up adding it, it was a bonus after the fact. So pointless that it makes me wonder why they bothered is the fucking horse stamina gauge in witcher 3 since it's only relevant during the races, whose rewards are increasing the stamina gauge for the horse, and it makes the rest of the game ever so slightly more of a slog

It's a reward for Hard Mode's time attack, which means you can access it after 2 times through the game. If you enjoy the game enough to have played it two times through, then you would likely enjoy playing a third time through but with these new goodies like whistling arrows, exploding arrows, and the parachute. I know that I did.

SotC was defined by its commitment to minimalism, removing everything that didn't support its core themes. This game takes that concept even further, by removing the minimalism.

I find it interesting how Yahtzee’s criticism of crafting elements and open world games actually encourage a reduced workload for game developers. He’d prefer one or two things done beautifully rather than a whole bunch of passably mediocre elements crammed into one game. I think it would be a good direction for single player games to go

I feel The Last of Us did this really well. Fantastic atmosphere through storytelling, voice acting and soundtrack. Minimalist crafting and combat really. If you really wanted to craft you could run around and loot everything to make your run easier, but you didn't really need to do it to survive. Hell, except for a very few instances you actually didn't need to fight at all in TLOU.

Good news, your grappling hook has durability and can break mid-fight. So it only trivializes things if you're already good at the game.

Yeah that's what i thought. And yet they fucked it up. THEY FUCKED UP SOTC WITH A GRAPPLING HOOK LAUNCHER. The fucking things break after like 5 uses and you have to go find more sticks to make a new one. He wasn't joking. I couldn't believe how fast their durability goes down, and also how awfully crammed in the survival elements like food/cold are. I went back and restarted the game on the setting where they have the least impact on the game because even just in the start they were getting fucking tedious. In a game where you want to explore, you shouldn't be freezing to death because you wanted to check out what was out in the blizzard off the main path... especially when it turns out there IS stuff there but your grappling hook broke on the way back so you have to slowly climb up the cliffs instead ugh.

This game was on Kickstarter since 2015 and it feels like that cause all the crafting stuff would have been more immersive when it was still a novel concept. Also shame about the trademark issues on Prey, cause Prey to the Gods is a damn good name.

@@stpirate89 No. No it was not. Crafting and survival hasn't been a NOVEL concept for two decades. I mean, it can and will still be done well and enhance a game, in a game that's well suited to them and where they are well implemented in them. The problem is that every Tom, Dick, and Sue wanting to pad out their game by shoving them in. At least in Prey to the Gods, they could see how ill fitting those mechanics were since you can just straight up turn most of them off.

Survival crafting is basically the "we ran out of ideas" style of gaffer tape on a sinking ship for most games.

The problem with Survival Crafting is that it's a very weighty mechanic that typically requires a lot of consideration to implement well. So slapping it in a game as just another feature will almost never end well. And for a struggling game, to use your ship analogy, it's like installing a new boiler on the Titanic as it's going down.

It's gotta be a center piece of the game for sure. Regular crafting is one thing, but when it's baked into a survival element, you'd better damn well be sure it's got a purpose or else the gamers will optimize it right out of the experience! And then there's the issue of games just suffering for it when something could work perfectly well without. Don't make me grind resources to use when they're an integral part of the core loop! E.g. Bloodborne was amazing, but farming blood vials after you got pancaked one too many times was such a low point in the game. I liked being able to convert resources, but the farming aspect was just extra punishment that didn't add anything.

A key binding principle of Shadow of the Colossus was its minimalism; the fact that the gameplay features were so limited and that there was limited UI and that there was nothing in the world besides you, the Colossi and the small lizards with everything leading to the one objective was key to what made it stand out so particularly. Trying to remove the minimalism it seems only really makes this less defined focus wise

I think the problem here is that a lot of people complain about SotC is that was completely empty save for the colossus fights, so it makes sense that someone would try to make a SotC spiritual successor but that is not completely empty save for the colossus fights.

Yahtzee, it's incredible how the series have been going for so long, and your physical/cut-based/puppetry comedy is still so fresh. The pig shocked by the cleaver was such an unneccessary, but indispensable gag.

I really enjoyed the combination, especially since the hookshot is missing from BotW. The only problem with the game is how often you need to hunt- last time I played, I hunted all the animals and they didn't respawn, so bang goes that run.

I feel like Dragon's Dogma is a spiritual predecessor to Breath of the Wild and it also has you climb your bosses to target weakpoints if you want to. Climbing onto a chimera's ass and cutting off the snake tail does not get old...until you start fighting Gorchimeras and they start regenerating their lost heads

"This item that would save you in the event you lose all your stamina and fall, but it costs stamina so feck off it will never matter" issue - I wonder if there could be a simple design fix for that. Maybe if you run out of stamina in your stamina bar (and thus lose your grip, or lose continuity on whatever you were doing), you get a 'second wind' that gives you, like, 10% of your bar back (or some amount), just enough to not completely be screwed over, but the catch is that you can only get that safety net back by letting your bar fully recover, so you can't just, say, fall off from stamina, hookshot back with your second wind, keep fighting, then fall and hookshot again later on in the same fight, unless you found a good spot on the Giant Skyscraper Monster to take a breather and drink some stamina potions or whatever. You could even make the Stamina Bar itself slightly smaller to compensate for this, so you aren't given any *more* useful stamina than normal, but it *feels* like you have a little bonus tucked away, just in case. It could also give another mechanic to play with for gear and skills and buffs and such - maybe there's an item that lets you hold *two* second winds, or something that makes your next second wind recover a little more stamina; maybe there's a cool weapon that's really big and cumbersome, so it makes your second wind *less* potent if you're wielding it and run empty. Maybe there's achievements for beating the titans without using your second wind - or beating one *during* your second wind recovery in a last ditch effort.

Breath of the Wild had it that, even if you were out of stamina, you could use the paraglider for a split-second; enabling you to land safely if you used the paraglider just before hitting the ground.

@@matthewmuir8884 I mean, Breath of the Wild SORT OF had that, mostly as a bit of a game-ey "Mario negates fall damage by starting a ground pound" sort of way. I think the idea is more, after running out of Stamina completely, and suffering those immediate effects, you get a bit more that you can use for recovery features, that can be dependent on say, using your parachute for more than .03 seconds to actually reduce your momentum, or swimming a tiny bit or something. As an aside, because I just thought about it for so long. When did Stamina become the feature of every single game? I know it WASN'T Breath of the Wild for this one, though it may or may not have been the one that started the trend of it being tied it to the character being able to use it to make the level designers cry.

I'd love to see a Generation Zero review. It's a survival/fps that takes the minimalist route to survival on the basic premise of don't die but not making you focus on food or water. It also has a pretty cool story that is rold more through the scenery and environment than through dialog, although there is some of that.

I gave this a go YEARS ago at this point, and it was so horrendously optimised that it was borderline unplayable. Maybe I'll give it another go now it's released properly. Or maybe I'll just go play Shadow of the Colossus again.

When I was a kid I always wanted some kind of minions that I could beat the shit out of in-between Colossus fights, but now I can understand how much purer and more refined the game is without anything else in it. There's the lizards you can hunt and the traversal space between you and the next Colussus, and that's your lot.

The actual reason its called "Praey for the Gods" and not "Prey for the Gods" is because Bethesda basically threatened to sue them and they didn't want do deal with that.

Ye, sure... you can't call your game "prey" too if an already existing game has the same name, I get that... but prey is a common word in the dictionary. Why wouldn't you be able to call your game "The Scrolls of Fire and Water" or ""Prey Behaviour Instinct" or something of sorts.

@@casualfungaming4356 yeah, its stupid, but companies are also expected to defend their trademark independent of how stupid it is with the risk of losing rights over it, so they HAVE to defend it. that is also why most of the time if they go to court they will just settle and forget about it, the problem is not everyone have the time or money to fight a legal battle, so its better to back off.

There is a parachute in SotC, you just have to unlock it from the Time Attack mode.

Considering the Kickstarter for this game was in 2016, that it came out at all was surprising. - I loved the grapple and parachute additions to the Shadow of the Colossus gameplay (that was the selling point for the Kickstarter). - Hard agree that there needed to be more giant monster fights and less survival. - I found that you could do them in any order if you found their lair by exploring, so the indicator just showed the next recommended one. - At least they circumvented weapon breakage by making the weak points a lever instead of a "stab here" mark. - The lore was definitely hard to find, but the exploration puzzles could be fun.

"The parachute uses stamina!" Isn't that ENTIRELY counterintuitive? The whole purpose of the chute would be to have a safe landing in the event you DON'T have stamina and you fall off the beast. It's like a scenario of, "Oh, you gambled too much at the roulette table and you ran out of money? Well, you'll need to buy some more tokens to get out of the casino."

I get that this channel is to make fun of games, been watching a long time (well before yahtzee was on youtube). With that said... I have to say I think this game is down right fantastic. I bought it back when there was only a couple gods to battle and fell in love. I just picked it back up because the 1.0 release finally came out. And I still love it. I personally enjoy playing it on the ultimate hardest. The game has 2 settings... battle difficulty, and survival difficulty. So you can play hard enemies with light survivial or light enemies with hard survival or just balls to the wall hard everything. And I play balls to the wall hard everything. You gotta sleep, you gotta eat, you gotta craft, you gotta everything. It's downright FANTASTIC. On the easier settings these features seem tacked on a little, especially the crafting and what not. And I can see that being like "why is this even here?". But on the ultimate hard settings its a freaking experience and I freaking love it. I get it might not be for everyone. If you don't like crafting... ok. But I mean the crafting in this isn't really that complicated. It's not minecraft crafting... it's like Zelda BOTW crafting in that really it's repairing your equipment and if it breaks completely you can make a club or the sort out of sticks. Which makes sense since shadow is a sort of homage to zelda style games beefed up and distilled. This game is just "well zelda added new things since the PS2 era, lets add them here". If you like Shadow of the Colossus, and you want more of it but cranked up in difficulty on every front, play this at max pain levels. I get lost for hours in this game just pretending I'm struggling in this frozen waste land. Contemplating if I can make it up that cliff or across that river to see if a secret is hiding in that cave I can sort of see through the thick snow blasting in my face. ... TLDR; This game is Shadow of Colossus with a bit of Zelda BOTW tossed in. The so-called "crafting" is more in line with the breakable weapons in BOTW than it is with say "crafting" in most games like say valheim or minecraft.

Shadow of the Colossus was pretty famous for leaving out as many features as they could to keep the focus on the colossi fights so it's an odd choice to take that game and add crafting onto it.

From the sounds of this review, they did good. They did something right and tried something new. They don't seem to have succeeded in Yatzs eyes, but we have to applaud the effort or little Timmy's indie game will never be dreamt.

For the last few days seeing this in my watch feed, the image that kept jumping into my head was dragon age origins using the character builder and just the moment you got free control they throw on some leather item and just modded in your common assault rifle, so just seeing the screenshot you used I just kept thinking okay so dragon age, but with guns? Kinda disappointed it wasn’t that.

I remember yhatzee complaining about shooting lizards being stupid during the colossus review. I think PFTG came really close to solving that with the puzzles, then messed it up right at the end with +5 shoes, rather than a stamina increase

this game sounds like a halfway point between shadow of the colossus and monster hunter, but both of those games are good for how hard they commit to their concepts that this one can't compare just by definition of not having a strong enough core identity that it could commit to

Ohhh odd thought on a shadow of the colossus style game. A monster island game. you are an agent for goverment/corperation that's studying the Kaiju like creatures and your sent in because the facility has gone dark. the island has several different bioms some of the more extreme ones are because of the kaiju in them, the snowy biom exists because of the massive frost giant roaming through it. You rescue scientists, and researchers to learn the Kaiju's weaknesses, to learn what you need to escape, the information your bosses wanted and other things. you can pick and chooses how you want to proceed some monsters can be bypassed entirely, others will come to the aid of another unless you do something first destroying one monster might make another more aggressive or have them move territory possibly changing the boim of the terrain. Destroy the afformentioned frost giant and the slime beast from the swamps might take over leading to that frozen section to become an extended swamp

A lot of people forgot about one HUGE detail about this game that forced the developers to use the ridiculous word "Praey" in the title. Bethesda & Zenimax actually sued the makers of "Praey for the Gods" & claimed that it infringed on their copyright for Arkane Studios' Prey game. Their lawsuit forced the developers to change the name!

One thing that's often overlooked about this game is that is was only made by THREE PEOPLE (last I checked). That doesn't make it immune to criticism but given how good the game looks it's pretty astonishing

The name change wasn't really their choice. Mid-development (when Bethesda was about to release the 2017 Prey), Bethesda/ZeniMax filed a trademark dispute over the use of the word "Prey". The devs decided not to fight it. You may remember Bethesda/ZeniMax for similar trademark trolling in the past, when they claimed Mojang's "Scrolls" was too close to "The Elder Scrolls". Bethesda sued Mojang, which was eventually settled out of court by Mojang agreeing to pay a license fee to use the word as their title.
