Ending up in J-Hell to confront your sins and the people you wronged in Life is pretty high up on the Kurosawa Meter. Bonus points if your character realizes the futility of their actions and/or the only reason why they're dead and in J-Hell is because of the demands/expectations of Japanese society.

I'd love a spore-kind of game but for gastronomy. So you start as a burger flipper, having some timing-based missions for burgers and fries, but instead of just making the recipes more and more complex, you get promoted to shift-manager and now you can delegate those missions to other employees. If you don't have enough employees you still have to do some of the missions yourself and your employees have different strengths, so not everyone can do every mission with the same speed, etc. Then you get promoted to store-manager, where you have to hire employees, promote them to shiftmanagers and take care of buying ingredients. Then you become regional manager, where you have to open different branches of the chain and take care of things like rent, money allocation, decide specials for different branches, etc., after that you become the national Vice President and have to make deals with providers and politicians about zoning laws, employment laws, etc. At the end you'd be like international CEO and have to deal with expansion to different countries, where you need to understand their different laws for every country and bribe politicians to get tax-deductions and relocate certain aspects of your company to different countries to make the most money. So it starts out like a flash-minigame, becomes a management game into a strategy game and ends up as a politics-simulator and everytime you get promoted you have to make sure that your succesor is doing a good job as well. This could also be done with different franchises with different playstyles. So when you start, you decide if you want to work at a mcdonalds style restaurant that is already established worldwide and you just get promoted internally or you start at a local pizza-chain with 3-4 restaurants, or you work at a food-cart that hasn't even established it's first restaurant yet and depending on where you start the challenges are different. Maybe you can even swap out, when you start at a mcdonalds and then when you become a store-manager you can chose to switch jobs to a smaller pizza-chain, etc. Or maybe add something where you can buy out the competition to expand your company to have different brands with different needs, etc.

Despite how _Trek to Yomi_ sounds mildly disappointing, I do now want to rewatch _Yojimbo_ more than I already did. So thanks. Also it's hilarious how the loving couple of _Ravenous Devils_ is an utter indictment of how poorly romance in a relationship tends to be written given that literally murderous cannibals sound more functional than 99.99% of fictional couples.
@thrownstair
@thrownstair 2 года назад
As a general rule, happy couples are rarer in fiction because having two characters who barely tolerate each other’s presence until the last chapter is an easy way to add tension to a story.
@ADHadh
@ADHadh 2 года назад
Happy couples, just like peaceful villages, don't make for interesting entertainment, usually.
@MusicoftheDamned
@MusicoftheDamned 2 года назад
@@thrownstair I know *why* the terrible romances exist. It's large part because it's so easily lazy to write cheap melodrama via poor communication and contrived coincidence that lead to a second act break-up or repeated break-ups. It's also far easier to write getting into a relationship than the relationship itself, which allows (too many) people to idealize the "happy ever after" even if the basis for the relationship was utterly shallow to begin with. I'm just saying that it is rather telling that even when you get past the (adult) couples that can't communicate for often no good reason, _Ravenous Devils_ also apparently has a couple that clearly has at least common goal and shared interest beyond "alright, we'll bang", even if that interest is murder. Again, like 99.99% of fictional couples don't even seem to get as far as sharing *any* (significant) interests, which is part of why I often find myself wondering why the hell they're together and, more importantly, why the hell we're supposed to care about them being together.
@MusicoftheDamned
@MusicoftheDamned 2 года назад
@@ADHadh I'm not disputing that, Mr. Tolstoy. All I'm saying is that, as just said above, _Ravenous Devils_ shows you can still write a loving couple without it being detriment to the story. This especially since most "romances" aren't even about the relationship itself but about the getting together. It would just be nice to see more stories written like that even if they're probably more plot-driven than character-driven, and I say that this as someone who isn't remotely romantic. Although this is reminding me, once again, why I generally like _The Addams Family_ since that's another rare example of a functional adult couple, and they could hardly be called boring.
@SWProductions100
@SWProductions100 2 года назад
@@MusicoftheDamned In regards to the Addams family, I think I might make the argument that the source of tension mostly comes from the Addams interaction with 'regular folk,' not the couple themselves. Since the burden of producing tension doesn't fall on the couple, it perhaps allows room for the couple to be very lovey-dovey with each other.

Hallmark's Japanese branch really has it all figured out. There are _at least_ four different flavors of "Sorry to hear your master got got" (though two of them _were_ both "... by your substantially more accomplished older brother"). I didn't look too hard to get an exact count, though. They were right next to a bigger collection that boiled down to "Sorry, [blood relation], but I'm not really interested in you, sexually", and I didn't want to think about that too hard.

For some reason, the Japanese and the Polish think very highly of each other. To the extent that apparently some Japanese author wrote "both nations(Poland and Japan) love honor and attachment to ideals above all else, and a reader from the Vistula River would easily understand what bushido is." The Japanese even REJECTED (which was somehow possible) Poland's declaration of war against Japan in WW2, saying that Poland was just coerced to doing that by their allies.

Fun fact, that whole gushing blood thing was originally a technical error, which everyone involved thought the director would immediately demand a reshoot of due to him being INCREDIBLY pedantic, forcing the crew to reverse the flow of a river because he thought it'd look better in a scene. He loved the accident and left it in. Edit: Also the guy who had said blood spurting out of him nearly got knocked off his feet by the sheer force of it coming out unexpectedly

I think "taikutsuna hito" means "bored guy," not "boring guy."

Plus, I mean, half the people that work in restaurants look like they’ve done a few murders in their time anyway. And the other half, well…

Would bother finishing it? I could go for seconds? Some pretty high praise from Yahtzee.

Just commenting to make sure that by 退屈な人 you meant "bored people" (which is what it means) and not the rather more snide "boring people," which would more likely be つまらない人.

Trek to Yomi: ZP's Third Blandest Game of 2022, as summed up by Yahtzee: "You know, I'm starting to relish Third Blandest as a sort of 'one true blandest' award: a game so bland, it couldn't even stand out in the field of blandness. This year, it's Trek to Yomi, a game about waving a sword and moving right, that limps its way through a stop-and-start plot before meandering to a close and disappearing from my memory until this very instant."

Just finished Trek to Yomi, it's not bad but I'd rather have ignored it. The visual is more confusing than it is interesting, and the way the game keeps changing your "roads" make it worse. The combat can get frustrating when you're trying to turn around but instead the game refuses and you get chain hit because of it. The final boss is too easy, easier than mid-game boss, and the story is just boring too with no payoff. When you get the Up+light-> light -> heavy that's all you need to use until you get the down+light -> light -> light -> heavy, which just kills anything easily. There's no easy way to try the different paths, there's no way in Yomi that I'm going to replay this game for them.

Now I want to play a stealth game kinda like dishonored but where you not saving an empire your just stocking the local meat pie shop (there are OPTIONAL cooking mini games in it but you don't get anything gamebraking for doing them)

One thing I don't understand about Ravenous Devils is why they didn't just make it actually Sweeney Todd. It's not subtle about the inspiration, and the character is public domain

Was genuinely surprised that Trek to Yomi ended up on the "Blandest of the Year" list, in the coverted 3rd place spot too, because it didn't really come across as offensively bland in this review. Maybe his opinion on it soured later?

If the devs for RD came back and tripled down on intensity and complexity, risk, and potential failure states, I would be all down for that. Maybe all that blood gets the attention of a victorian era vampire that's so impressed that he becomes a patron, giving them some minor powers. That would explain how some equipment like the sowing machine operates itself.
