Nice video, thank You for it. Even some Czechs can find it useful. A little addition: the origin of the name Praha isn't 100% clear, but one theory says it comes from the word "práh" (= the threshold). Exactly the river threshold = the shallow part of the Vltava river you mentioned in this video. And one fact, maybe little surprising for tourists. The Charles bridge seems to be the "typical medieval bridge" for pedestrians only. But in the past it served for normal traffic, including trams. In the beginning horse-powered trams, later electric trams with special bottom-feed system without trolley wires. Imagine a tram coming thru the medieval Bridge Tower. Isn't it crazy?
@kenlee1416
@kenlee1416 Месяц назад
Seen some photos of tram and cars on the bridge. At the time cars were allowed, the tram lines had apparently been removed.

Actually, the most probable and realistic explanation of the name (as people used to name places aby their natural or material characteristics) is connected to the word "pražit" (roast, originally meaning sth like "to burn"), the area used to be full of forests and natural meadows until people decided to burn them and establish a settlement there. The area then remained empty and burnt (vyprahlé). Such practices used to be very common during early middle ages. Similar story to the Polish name of the Warsaw's district of Praga which has the same etymological root and explanation. Polish version of "práh" is "próg", not "praga". It's a really nice fun fact.

Valery is great. I am impressed with her presentation, and with her command of the English Language. But while her slightly off syntax is somewhat endearing, let me offer an observation that may help her become even more fluent. This is a nuanced observation, and one I am sure that if the tables were turned and someone were to correct me at my current level of Czech learning, which is rank beginner, I would not have a clue what to think. In other words, I am only offering this suggestion because her English is so good that she will probably be able to understand it. She said at the opening: "This is how Prague looks like today". I would say: "This is how Prague looks today", or "this is what Prague looks like today". I don't know grammar rules well enough to explain one construction over the other, I just know what sounds right to me, a native English speaker with a B.A. In Literature. Cheers. I appreciate all the great videos. My next trip there will be more enjoyable because of them (and also the Honest Guide ones).

Just small comments: The settlement in this area is really old one. There was large settlement on the riverbanks of Vltava in the northern end of Prague in Late Stone Age. Btw. there were much more old Slavic settlements in the northern part like locality Zámka not so far from the place where I stay (it is quite a nice walf from the ZOO). Old Town is the oldest part of the real Prague, as the castle wasn't originally part of the city. And the second city of Prague wasn't the New Town, but the German Town - inner town inside the Old Town with its own fortification located around Havelský trh founded in the 1st half of the 13th century.

That was interesting! I have been wondering why the city was built up. Didn't know it was because of the river. I was intrigued by the closed-off stairs to down below in many of the businesses we visited. In one restaurant in Mala Strana I had to go below for the bathroom, and saw steps leading down at least two more levels. But that was blocked by a door of steel bars.

Great video! I really enjoy hearing about history through the urbanist lens. Just to complement, art noveau is only one of the styles to be seen at Pařížská, a lot of the houses there are built in historicism (neoclassicism, neogothic, neobaroque) and eclecticism (= a mix of the 3, plus art noveau). On the picture of Paris you showed, the buildings are mostly neoclassical.

Snad v pristich podobnych videich bys mohla trochu zvolnit sve tempo presentace.

My favourites are starting at Petrin and walking down though the myriad of pathways to Kinsky garden, or Strahov Monastery down through Novy Svet and through the stag moat to Malostranska, or along the river from Uholicky back into town or from Branik along the river back into town. I think the real reason was beer. While Pilsner Urquell perfected the finest beer in the world, centuries before, Bohemians were brewing great beers on a smaller scale. Beer, being the lifeblood of ye olden days, attracted settlers to Bohemia. Because of the growth of beer, a need for beer mugs and glasses arose, so the crystal and glass industry was formed. The rest is history...

Think for a while about the 'bombing explanation'!! What medieval buiding/palace/church etc. built before 1800 in Berlin or Munich WAS THERE IN 1938 and is NOT THERE NOW (rebuilt) - can you give some examples in Berlin or Munich? Probably not. Hence ..... the 'no bombing theory' about preserved medieval architecture in PRG is a nonsense;) Basically anything historically valuable that existed in1938 was rebuilt post WW2 in Berlin,Munich, Vienna, Paris, even Warsaw etc etc. The reason why so much medieval architecture in PRG was preserved is different
