While they can be confused, they are two different things. Backfire is when fuel between the carburetor and the cylinder combusts. Afterfire is when fuel is past the cylinder in the exhaust that combusts. We had been cranking on a bad battery for a while and had a bit of fuel that made it to the exhaust giving us a nice visible flame!
