I don't think that I've ever seen someone use a number of GoPros and screen recording this way. Clever. Looks like a fair bit of effort in editing too.

The Flying Reporter What struck me is that the three GoPros aren’t “visible” despite being in plain sight, and that the barrel distortion goes pretty much unnoticed. You did kind of give the game away toward the end when you included a shot of you holding one of the GoPros :) If I have one criticism, it’s that the shots of the paper map are pretty soft, which would appear to be the result of hand holding the camera. But hey, I’m impressed. You’re showing your expertise as a video journalist, and I’ve just learned a couple of things :)
@TheFlyingReporter

Yes, they were a bit soft...it's sorted for the rest of the series.

I have said in the past that you are quite the most organised pilot in the world Jon and I am soo right, I used to just draw a line on the map from A To B and break right or left when I thought something looked a bit dodgy and when I was past it get back on track!! Awesome and so educational mate, can't wait for the next episode.

Absolutely agree with you David. People, these days simply plot skydeamon and fly the route. Very good to see Jon doing it in traditional (and correct) way.

Definitely living up to your "Flying Reporter" moniker - another really enjoyable and informative video. It's only when you try to document it that you really realise how much work actually goes into planning a route !! It's amazing how much easier a new flight is when you've flown the route and radio calls from the comfort of your couch first !!
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 лет назад
It's obviously a much quicker process in real life. Explaining it like this makes it look like a bit of a rigmarole.
@clearofcloud2038
@clearofcloud2038 6 лет назад
True, but we I think we do so much "virtual" flying as pilots that we don't realise that it adds to the overall planning time. I have much less airspace to contend with normally but my process is quite similar to yours. I'll be interested to see the upcoming episodes.

Looks like a good series to watch. I plan my flights in a similar way. You have to in congested areas. Not so much on a local flight where I know the route is pretty much a straight shot. I'm familiar with where I can land in the event of an emergency.

Fantastic Jon, I have been out of the "saddle" for 10 years but back on it at Goodwood this year. Its amazing to see Skydemon etc and how its made the Nav and Planning so much easier - backed up by the same plotted onto the half mil map of course. Great stuff and looking forward to the next one. Will look at your change to Paypal and put some hard earned your way to help support - not only great to watch but brilliantly educational especially after not having flown for 10 years. (although i now need to learn to work a G1000 in a Cessna). Bravo!

Just a suggestion for marking charts. Use colored, transparent "highlighter" tape, and draw your black lines on that. You'll be able to see through the tape, and in flight can quickly see your route without hunting for it. Works great, and the tape is easily removed. Thanks for all the hard work on your videos!

Looking forward to the rest of the series. PM me if you want another flying meet up at some point. Hi there, I have my first PPL lesson up at Rochester (EGTO) on Friday and I can't wait! I have two questions for you; Firstly, what pens do you draw with on your CAA chart? And secondly, what do you use to rub the ink off afterwards? Cheers Sam
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 лет назад
Hi. I used pens like this to mark the map www.transair.co.uk/sp+Chart-Naviation-Accessories-Lumocolour-Chart-Pen-Pack+4660 I then use the following whiteboard marker pen, drawing over the top of the lines, and a tissue to wipe clean the pen marks. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0031RG2BU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Could you of flew VFR all the way without speaking to ATC?
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 6 лет назад
You'd have to speak to Biggin Hill, if you avoided Luton, you could avoid speaking to them, you'd be wise to speak to Cranfield if you're passing through their instrument approach procedure. If you routed east and below East Midlands controlled airspace, you could avoid speaking to them, but you ought to speak to Sherburn on arrival. In short - not really.
