There are two styles of dovetailers. Those who think of them as utilitarian joints and those who take 'em to the next level and add a cosmetic touch. This video is for those who want to bring a level of precision to their hand cut dovetails and thus all joinery.

You're a heck of a good teacher. I am obsessed with the process of making dovetails. My profession (retired now) required precision. Tight fitting dovetails require precision at each step. Otherwise frustration sets in trying to make the dovetails fit in the end. I appreciate the details of this video. My most recent discovery is that preparing the pieces of wood as exact as possible makes the next step in the process less tedious. Thanks.

Hi there, i sure love your videos, great learning experience for a noob like me, i just pause the video because you said something that nobody says, that you can do both the pins or the tails first, guys like Frank goes pins first head on and lighting fast and great tecnique, and Rob Cosman e Paul Sellers are going tails with great results too, but not once somebody said that depends on the wood size and easy way to work it, i'm going to see rest of the video and hope to learn more good tips. thanks. Sorry for the bad English but i'm from Portugal.

I'm really interested in your comments about being able to see what you are doing and how you worked around a lamp to help. I'm finding being able to see what I'm doing in the tight space between pins problematic and have taken to using magnifying glasses. An age problem perhaps. It's good to see I'm not alone in needing assistance.

I think one thing some people can’t comprehend is a 1 in dovetail will not fit in a 1 inch cut out. There as you know is interference... makes a difference what side of the line or on the line you are cutting. good video. Thanks

john ross Hahahaha, dude.... even Sellers admits to learning this stuff. I got it from books written decades before he was born. Sellers is a good teacher but he hasn’t brought anything new to the craft (neither have I).

@tonyennis1787 10 месяцев назад
Great video. When you're cutting the pins, do you obliterate the line, cut the waste side, or cut to the not-waste side? I'm working on a cabinet and my dovetails are coming out way too tight. It takes a lot of time to fix them and since it is hard to tell where it is too tight and thus some guesswork is needed, the overall fit gets degraded.

Your videos are really useful and so well presented. You are a great teacher. I hope you don’t mind, and it is probably just me being overly detailed... your voice is great but your audio is way off, making a little hard to listen to at times with shrill resonance and not compensating for whatever mic you are using. Just do a little eq and compression and drop the camera back a few feet or use a little wider angle lens. It will diminish the obviousness of the soft and missed focus shots too. Not a huge thing. Would take your game way up though...

@@wortheffort That was not meant to be a criticism of tail first. I really enjoy your videos and I learn a lot. For me pins first is a bit easier. I haven't tried try cutting dovetails with longer boards yet. I might change my mind. Our methods constantly evolve.
