This is a brief overview of the Precision Mathews PM-940M-PDF mill. This mill has the optional Power Down Feed and power cross feed. It was outfitted with a DRO before I bought it. I need to order that and get it installed. Contact Matt at Quality Machine Tool for any purchasing questions you may have. QMT has excellent customer service.
Please find their new website here at www.precisionmatthews.com/ for current pricing and availability. I have no affiliation whatsoever other than I'm a happy customer.
This is a square column benchtop category mill. Even though it's a good sized machine and sits on it's own stand, it's lineage comes from smaller benchtop machines. This mill has pretty generous size capacities, but isn't the most rigid or super powerful. This is more than ok as long as you know the limitations of the machine. It has done everything I've asked it to do without bogging it down. The machine will vibrate and tell you you've reached it's capabilities before things get out of hand. For the hobby machinist, it's just fine. It's not a production machine with a bunch of horsepower that can make huge cuts deep and fast. That being said, it's plenty accurate and makes a beautiful finish. Perfect! I'm more than satisfied with my purchase. I'd say the only real drawback to this machine is it sets you up for wanting more! LOL

Nice heavy mill. I have one. I got the stripped down version with hardened ways. I haven't used mine much yet. I am in the process of converting it to cnc. I have the electronics enclosure done and have the servo motors ready to use. I have to build the ball screw mounts now. I am impressed with the heavy castings and the large work envelope and think it will make a great cnc conversion when I eventually get it done.

i am pretty sure, that symbol on the power downfeed selection knob, means dont change it while the spindle motor is running. not only turn it one direction. that symbol is fairly standard across the chinese machines to tell you dont change selectors with motor running

I have an 833t and looking at one of these or just getting a knee mill, maybe even a used industrial knee mill I need a bigger work envelope to finish some of my cnc conversions to machine the dovetails off. Guessing this may not be rigid or accurate enough? Some insight would be great. Also I see half their options are out of stock it’s either basic hardened ways or deluxe. I’d also like 4 of those cast iron stands I didn’t see them sold separately.

Jeff, I’m not sure how I missed that! 😆 But yes, the table move back and forth (don’t remember how much at the moment) using the wheel that is forward facing and aimed at your beltline. I can measure the distance it moves if you like. PM has all the specs on their website as well. They make have changed it so it’s worth looking. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🍻

Thanks! I didn't buy it for a specific job, more of having a tool in the tool box. I never know when or what I need it for. Very handy. I use it probably at a minimum of once a week. I do a lot of fab and repair work so a mill and lathe come in great use all the time. No decent shop should be without them.

i have a hm48 mill,practically the same mill.its a little confusing in the manual about oiling the ways on the table.i manually squirt oil in to the table ways ,is this what you do or am i missing something here.thanks in advance
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 6 лет назад
I use the included drilled passages and oiling the ways with way oil. Way oil is tackier and tends to “hang around” better than other oils. As long as you keep them clean and lubricated often, you should be all set. Just remember, this isn’t a production mill, but a hobbyist’s machine. It’s awesome in a lot of ways, but it’s not an old school Bridgeport mill.

Why the long studs to hold the vise to the table? Restricts the swivel of the vise.

They are the included studs and don’t interfere with any movement. It works perfectly. Perhaps it’s just the camera angle?

@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 7 лет назад
I did not get the hardened option. I'm not sure I'd need it other than to feel good about having it. It's a great machine with large part capabilities, but it's not a knee mill. If you are using it for hobby use, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you are using it everyday or for commercial projects, than I would step up to a 935 or something bigger. I use mine fairly regularly and see no reason why it won't last me a long time. 👍🏼

Jerry, get the biggest one you can use. You almost never hear of the complaint that “it’s too big” or “it has too much power.” But you’ll always hear the folks cry when it’s not big enough or has enough power. Buy once, cry once. But enjoy it to the fullest. 👍🏼

Did it tram out OK with the square column? I like this mill but with a gear head something will break instead of slip.
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 7 лет назад
Yessir it did. I prefer the gear head for quicker speed changes. You're not nearly as likely to crash a mill and break something as you are a lathe. You'll quickly run out of HP before you break the geartrain. These designs have been around for a long time and have proven very reliable.

How dors it drill and how ridged is it
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 4 года назад
It drills just fine. Better than a drill press. As far as rigidity, it’s not the best as a mill, but a lot stronger than a standard drill press. But for the size and capabilities, it’s just fine. If you want stronger, you’ll need to step up to a knee mill.

Mine is pretty close to 37”. That’s with the 1.5” feet I’ve added under the stand. You can easily build it up higher if you needed to. I’ve fond it works great for me. A stool can make things more ergonomic for you as well.

@ronson66
@ronson66 7 лет назад
is it possible to cut some serious stuff with it like 4140 ?
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 7 лет назад
Yes, absolutely. With the right tooling 4140 doesn't present much of a challenge unless you are turning something very large. I've cut harder materials like inconel on the 1440E-LB with no issue. Hardened tractor transmission shafts cut easy with Carbide.
@ronson66
@ronson66 7 лет назад
I meant the PM 932/940 mills , are they capable of milling anything other that alu and plastic say 4140? and by milling I mean something better than 2 thou DOC
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 7 лет назад
Of course it can! But if you are trying to run a 6" cutter head with 10 inserts with a .050 DOC, it won't make it. It really depends on the material and the tool you plan to use. You have to remember, this is a very large benchtop style mill. It's very capable for what it is, but it's not a 5hp knee mill. It's cut anything I've ever clamped up, you just have to adjust speeds and feeds due to tooling and material. I don't have any insert tooling or carbide end mills for this mill yet other than a 2" facing tool. But I do have some 4140 laying here. I can make a video showing you what it can do.

What is the overall height of just the mill itself? I may have to use a different base because I'm limited by a few inches in my basement shop.
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 6 лет назад
It depends. I have an extra couple of inches on mine due to the feet I installed. Then the head trams a long ways. Mine fits under an 8' ceiling.
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 6 лет назад
The mill changes in height depending on where you have the head. It raises up and clears my 8' ceiling by a few inches. That's with the factory stand and an extra few inches I've added with the adjustable feet.
@MatlasX
@MatlasX 6 лет назад
I was particularly wanting to know how high it is without the factory stand. In other words, what is the height of just the mill with the head at its maximum height? Most appear to be about 4 ft?
@dieselshadow
@dieselshadow 6 лет назад
With the head fully raised against the electrical limits switch and very little room above the motor for cooling air intake, it's 61" from the top to the bottom of where it's painted white. So not including the blue factory stand.

It will have cheap tolerances, another importer may want to sell the same mill from the same factory but with higher tolerances.. china can make high quality stuff if they are asked to
