When Simone asked why one of them was drinking water from a vine instead of his canteen -- it's because they don't know how long they'll be in the jungle or when they'll be able to resupply. By scavenging wherever they can, they're giving themselves more time in the field and on mission without having to worry about it.

Many people dont realize that when the Predator picks Dutch up and looks at his skull he is checking if he is human. He has never been pushed so far, even hunted by another human. Once he sees hes an "ordinary" human who did it solely with his wits and guile and not actually some superior species different to humans he respects Dutch. That is why he follows by immediately trying to level the playing field. Predators may be violent killers but they have a deep sense of honor and respect for hunting and combat.

If you notice, Billy is the only one of Dutch's squad where the skull was taken instead of just the skin. This is because Billy dropped his guns, and turned to fight on a log, where he couldn't be flanked, IE had to fight head on. The implication is that the predator respected this, and fought him in kind, and valued his skull as a more worthy opponent.

In the US there are hunting seasons. If the game wardens catch you hunting out of season you will face heavy fines and possible jail time. I used to hunt deer with my dad and a family friend many years ago in Florida during the 80's. The area we used to hunt at during the off season we would go out to target practice and scope out areas for tree stands where we think we can get a good view of the area. There were a couple of times we would see deer who would run off right away. In the five years I hunted with my dad and our friend we saw and bagged one deer. The deer knew when it was hunting season and they were some army ranger trained ninjas. I stopped going out after five years because I got tired of getting up before sunrise to go sit in a tree stand, freezing my ass off (it does get cold in Florida) and be bored out of my mind for six hours. After another couple of years my dad and our friend gave up.

Predator is one of the greatest action movies ever created. Little Tidbits: 1) Showing the Alien spaceship in the beginning apparently was a studio mandate. Thinking audiences would not know what’s going on so it was added post production. I think the director was not even aware of it. 2) originally the creature looked horrible. Like a salmon colored rubber suit mantis, which was played by Jean Claud Van dam. You can find it online. They had to scrap that and start from new, needles to say it was 100% the right move. 3) if you I want another great campy/ cheesy Arnold movie, you should watch True Lies. It’s Arnold and James Cameron together and it’s one of the best early 90s action movies.

Regarding the director's knowledge of any changes to the film, this is a union film. As a DGA (Director Guild of America) signatory, 20th Century Fox is obligated to inform the Director of any changes (Either through studio screening rooms or VHS tapes.) Although they can't do anything regarding changes to the film, they do have the right, per contract, to have their name removed from the credits and replaced with the pseudonym Alan Smithee. (The fact that the director's actual name was still in the credits means he signed off on the final version of the feature.) An example of this would be the 1984 original theatrical version of Dune, which lists "Alan Smithee" in the credits.

Yup, and if he had run he might have lived, instead his honour as a man made him do something so stupid as sacrificing himself for nothing. He dies with just a scream, implying that it was utterly pointless. The entire movie is a subversion of the macho trope since Dutch beats the Predator by using a mix of the feminine cunning and the masculine violence. In every other instance where the soldiers used macho only they died. A critique of toxic masculinity before the term even existed. All because Mc `Tiernan wanted to make a different action movie, his next movie was Die Hard where all these desires came to fruition.

@@Outrider85 They're traditionally gendered values. If you ask anyone who believes in traditional gendered values then they'll tell you that women should never be violent and men should only ever feel two emotions, stoicism, and anger, because, "real men never show emotions," and, "real men fight for what they want." And you're incorrect. Predator is a horror movie disguised as an action movie. You're correct about the original intention being that it should just be an enjoyable movie since the tools used to see these things were only invented a couple of decades after the movie was made. The first 1/3 of the movie sets up Dutch's soldiers as supreme badasses through the use of action set-pieces. The next good part of the movie then tears that down as they're unable to deal with the Predator by acts of manly violence. Hudson even cracks jokes to relieve the tension. He's unable to cope with the fact that he's feeling fear so he cracks his jokes to lower it so he can go back to being stoic in the face of this terror. Everyone else using violence only dies pointlessly. Nowhere is this seen more explicitly than in Billy's death. He confronts the Predator, something that should make the Predator feel honoured, instead, we just hear Billy's death scream and if left with the uncomfortable imagination that the Predator just plowed right through him as it saw him as nothing more than a trophy even though he displayed extreme manliness by confronting it directly.
@ideologybot4592
@ideologybot4592 10 месяцев назад
@@nielsjensen4185 there's no reason or expectation for the alien to feel honored. Honor is a social construction, meant to systematize violent conflict and make it controlled and productive. The alien didn't care. And Billy's last stand was the only real example of any of the men doing something that made no strategic sense. These last two comments are filled with nothing but loathing for the entire concept of masculinity. Any kind of explicit power without shame, any kind of embrace of strength instead of shunning it and embracing vulnerability, is referred to as stupid, blind obedience to an idiotic archetype. I hope that at some point in the future, this kind of discussion is catalogued and held up as an example of how an ideal that tried to create balance and thoughtfulness almost immediate swung over and created disgust, because this is hatred. When defensive men talk about how kids are being taught to hate masculinity, this is what they're talking about, and no matter how much it's laughed off or mocked, it's no better than what it tries to fight.

This movie is a masterpiece of subverting expectations, unlike a lot of movies which just use it as a gimmick. I like the fact that we as an audience knows that this group of unfazed, macho tough guys is about to experience an alien creature. But at the same time the writers only show us the ship and we still get to learn the alien technology methodically throughout the film. This movie is almost a horror movie more than anything else. More than that, it's actually kind of a parody of 80s action, especially movies like Commando. But eventually the tone changes and it becomes more like a slasher film but with a hyper-masculine adult men instead of hyper-sexualized young women. Also, McTiernan didn't add the spaceship shot. That was tacked on without his knowledge.

You asked a question about the camouflage paint . It doesn’t matter what the pattern of the camouflage is the idea is to break up a solid mass . Human beings can see colour however the majority of animals do not show by breaking up the solid mass you blend in to your surroundings more for example if you were a Deer Hunter it wouldn’t matter if your camouflage colour was blue orange or yellow just as long as it had the breaking up with a solid mass. it would be harder for the animal to see you.

It actually does matter where you put colors when it comes to camouflage paint. There is a guide on how to apply it in the military soldier's manual. Black for the lighter areas of your face (forehead, chin, cheeks, tip of your nose). Lighter colors (green/brown) would be used to break up the contours of your face such as the jawline. Obviously, in movies and tv shows they just use patterns because it looks cool. However, you wouldn't see patterns like that in the actual military.

When it comes to tactical face-paint the pattern definitely makes a difference, the proper way to apply it is; apply dark colors to highly reflective areas of the face (forehead, bridge of nose, cheek bones) and apply light colors to darker areas of the face (around eyes, lower cheeks, under chin) then blend together. Not only showing that they have the skills and the Fire Power, but also the Attitude of Grizzled Veterans and Sonofabitches. Only for the movie to do a total 180* where those Bad Asses that had enough Testosteron to impregnant a whole darn State by their sheer presence, gets picked One by One by an Unknow enemy, to whom their skills and firepower Means shit, where they start to break mentaly and are under immense stress, even tho we saw them moments before shrugging off danger like it was nothing. From an Action flick it become a Thriller/Horror movie. For it to ONCE again shift into something else during the final climax of the movie, where the Hunter becomes the Hunted and Arnie uses the Predator's own tactics against it before duking it out Mano-a-Mano with one of the Most intimidating and Bad Ass looking Alien that cinema ever made. Anna said earlier in the film "the creature or makes trophies out of man". Also when the Yautja shot at Dutch after he kicked the gun out of Anna's hand he didn't shoot Dutch. He shot the gun. Also the reason why he kicked the gun out of her hand is because it's in the Yautja honor code not to kill anything that isn't armed with some form of weapon. Also at the end of the film the piolet of the helicopter was Kevin Peter Hall. It was his face cameo in the film because he played the Yautja. He was in the suit. He is like 7'3”. The sound effects editing for Predator was brilliant. In movie theaters with good sound systems, you would often know where the alien was from the rustling of leaves and the crackling of tree branches. This added to the suspense since the audience would sometimes know where the camouflaged creature was before the characters in the film had any clue. This was especially effective on the big screen where the director could sonically place the creature above and below, and to the left and right of the soldiers.

I always found the Yautja (or as we know them Predators) fascinating. Intergalactic tribal hunters is the easiest way to describe them. Supposedly the females are actually MORE dangerous than the males but that is just according to backstory lore...we have never seen one in films. The females raise the young on the homeworld and then when old enough the Predators go out into space and try to prove their worth by collecting trophies of creatures...only the most impressive trophies are of interest to them...the rest they tend to just kill. To them planets are hunting grounds and the creatures living on those worlds are simply prey...its that simple to them. The first battle was kind of important because the predator was watching them like "so...this is how they fight..." he was learning about them. But they do have an honour code; they don't kill unarmed people, not women (unless they attack first) or sick people or elderly (unless they attack first). Their technology is extremely advanced and like nothing our world has ever known and one of the biggest rules of their code is "if you are going to die...destroy all evidence" so basically a for of hara-kiri or suicide...they destroy their technology to stop enemies learning about it. We know they have encountered many powerful species (form the films and comics we can put this together) including the dinosaurs, the xenomorphs from ALIEN, humans and various other alien species. It is also a theory that part of the reason Humanity managed to enter space age in ALIEN was because they got a hold of Predator tech and reverse engineered it to advance to the space age.

@claw320 2 года назад
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 IMO that's debatable. In movies there is a delicate balance between letting the audience know too much or too little information. If a watcher knows TOO little, it could create confusion and lessens the enjoyment if someone doesn't quite understand what's going on. This is exactly what happened in the move Star Wars. The original cut of the movie didn't have the opening scroll, and first time watchers were just lost they couldn't make sense of all the weird things they saw. They then ADDED the famous scrolling text to provide a bit of context. In Predator you do see the ship drop something on earth but you still don't know what it is, so still somewhat mysterious. I think that provides barely enough context for watchers to interpret the events that unfold. The actor that plays the helicopter pilot at the end of the movie is also the one that brought the predator creature to life in both this movie as well as the sequel. His name was Kevin Peter Hall and he unfortunately passed away in 1991 due to an AIDS related illness at the age of 35.

A few points for your consideration. The scene where they’re all shooting blindly into the jungle for a couple minutes was John McTiernan reacting to the studio’s demands for “more gun action.” His response was make it completely ridiculously over-the-top, basically saying “You want gun action? HERES SOME GUN ACTION THEN! _HAPPY NOW?!“_ The guy who played Hawkins, the solider with the glasses, is Shane Black, the script writer who invented the buddy cop genre when he wrote the _Lethal Weapon_ movies. He’s one of the great Hollywood writers now, and his latest one, _The Nice Guys,_ you should really check out. Also, I don’t know if anybody else has mentioned this, but the opening “spaceship” shot was added post-production because the studio thought the audience wouldn’t “get” the setup. The original script kept the monster’s origins secret until halfway through, and even then you wouldn’t be sure of _what_ it actually was until the final reveal.

One of the greatest creatures ever designed for cinema, alongside the Xenomorph from Alien (there's a reason there are crossovers between these two franchises). Now though, you HAVE to do Predator 2 at some point. You can probably skip the others (Predators isn't so bad I guess). But imo, Pred 2 is even better than the original.

This is probably my favorite 80’s action flick, or perhaps it’s tied with Die Hard. Both films were the very best of the genres & were the templates for so many movies that copied, but could never quite recreate, the magic of those films (unless you count Die Hard 2 and 3 or Predator 2, which isn’t as good as the first, but is still a lot of fun).

I'm glad you both got to see this one. I was invited to go see it in the theater but my parents shot it down saying I was too young (bummer). The face camouflage is an interesting point to make and also serves as foreshadowing during the helicopter scene to show solution to fighting the Predator is full body mud camo (good writing). In the beginning face paint is just there to help with camouflage and terrain. So the colors are more important than the pattern in most instances. I have only used pseudo stipe pattern like Dutch does. But it is very annoying to clean off. It also helps to minimize reflection when you sweat. In this movie it serves very little purpose because their arms are bare. The whole idea is to cover up and leave no human colors to be identified and give away your position. Granted it is like 100 degree 100% humidity so they are using it to keep their faces a little less noticeable when they are looking over cover. You notice that they peek over logs or out of brush before the first battle.

Predator actually keeps it extremely fair. He doesn't hunt non-combatants, fights Arnold in hand-to-hand when he switched to primitive traps and weapons. He fights using alien technology, but humans have the best of the human weapons. They're all armed to the teeth and highly skilled.

Humans have evolved to see faces. It reached a point where we can see faces in clouds or wood grain, or toast. Face paint is used to hide the things on a face that make it look like a face. The most basic way for this is to put dark colors on the "high" places and light colors on the "low" places. The idea is to flatten the face. for that reason symmetry is bad as well. Darth Maul still looked like a face because it was balanced on each side.

The movie does a massive switch half-way through, from cheesy action flick with over-the-top testosterone, to a slasher movie; with Arnie and his crew the over-sexualised cheerleaders getting picked off one by one. Also, the helicopter ride at the start is a masterclass in introducing characters. No movie has done a better job of cramming everything you need to know about its cast into such a short time.

Fun fact: the Predator's speech patterns (those clicks and ticks) were done by Peter Cullen (the voice of Optimus Prime, Eeyore, and many more) after he had done the sounds for King Kong. His throat was fucked up from the constant roars, grunts, and growls he performed. He wanted a low-effort gig while his throat was healing. So, he went to recors this. He got there and requested that they show him what the creature look like to get an informed performance. His first though about it was that the face reminded him of a dying horseshoe crab he saw on a beach when he was young. He remembered the air cracking and popping as the crab's shell had been punctured, so he used a similar sound for the creatures vocal qualities. To my knowledge, he did at least the first two films. Every film after that just re-uses those sounds. Also, Kevin Peter Hall deserves all the credit for the physical performance. He was a great creature actor, and may he rest in peace. He was taken way too soon.
