@@Varvarmisanthrope I wish I could remember specifically, but that happened in a siege thousands of years ago. The women were observing the carnage from the rooftops while the men fought, but one of them grabbed a rooftile and threw it. Managed to hit and kill either the enemy General or King at the time.

i love how the predator repeats dutch’s question in his own voice. like this is the one time he isn’t just mimicking the vocal pattern, but asking the question with his real voice out of genuine disbelief.
Interesting theory. I too thought that the Predator was also genuinely interested in knowing what Dutch was exactly but this time his voice was different and more exhausted due to the fatal injury he endured.
@@CRL365 What the predator is really asking is: *I've hunted your kind before. None have ever been a true challege. How did you defeat me? What makes you different?*
I like to imagine this wasn’t your typical predator. Maybe one that’s hunted on earth for 100s of years. Ones that’s highly respected enough to go on hints by himself. And the first human to beat him used some of the most primitive techniques to do it. Truly worthy of a “what the hell....are you?” from the predator
Maybe, but there are a lot of people who are much more into the predator/yautja lore that claim this was actually a (relatively, not completely) inexperienced predator. It would equally explain his shock at coming across a human that was able to best him, maybe being under the impression that they aren't the most dangerous of prey.
Yes, but this movie was made in 1987. A few years later, when Predator 2 was made, you could see in the trophy room that there was a Xenomorph skull in that room. It was then that they got the idea to make Predator vs. Alien, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! xD
I just finished watching it for the 1st time and it was awesome but thecamouflage and laser beam effects looked like shit lol But for the last 30 minutes they looked WAY better (maybe because it was at night) and that entire final fight and ending was a fucking masterpiece, bumped the movie up from a 6.5 to an 8 for me.
@@destinykiller1975 I dont think that's Billy's laugh I mean it is but at the same time it's not, back when Billy and the squad took out that base his laugh was different than here...I mean it is his laugh but mixed with the predators
Throughout the whole film the Predator shows eery timing whenever he plays back a voiceclip, making me believe that he somewhat understands the humans. His 'what the hell are you?' at the end wasn't just him mimicking Arnold but rather his own disbelief that he got bested in this game
That’s actually it. Like, he’s killed numerous soldiers and trained fighters effortlessly and believes he will never find a fighter that will top him, especially not a human. When the jungle hunter was faced with the reality that he was bested by a human, he realizes the human was not like the rest.
I'm convinced that the reason predators laugh is because they heard it once from a mad man dying, liked the sound, tested it, and discovered it makes fear before and after battle.
Y'all are correct but they also laugh because they have emotion. Unlike the xenomorphs the Engineers and Yautja have human like DNA don't they? The aliens are just bred through human hosts but the engineers created humans and Yautja right? With their genes?
I'm pretty sure the Predator's "what...the hell...are YOU?" response was proof that the predator wasn't simply copying what was said, but that he understood the phrase and was showing surprise / respect for Dutch as an adversary. Why do I think this? Because the Predator says "what the hell are you" with normal pronunciation, not Arnold's "whut da hell are you" with his Austrian accent, LMAO
Yes and the predator already knew he was hunting humans and that to military commandos or sth. He already knew they were skilled to some extent but he was surprised by Arnold
1:52 Dutch asks "What the hell are you?" Even The Predator is not from this world and The Predator replies with the same question. The Predator has no interest in hunting people that defenseless and who can't fight back. He only wants to hunt others like him. He does not see Dutch as a normal human and respects him. He sees him as an equal opponent much like himself. Dutch asks him "What the hell are you?" and The Predator response back "What the hell are you?" So basically, they have no difference after all but Dutch never could understand.
@@Groncheroente it's more of getting rid of their tech and any other evidence they might have left behind, from what I know of the lore. This guy left his plasmacaster and mask somewhere.
I was 7 when I first saw this movie in a neighgour's house. I was so scared I couldn't go back home alone. The jungle beats kept drumming in my head days after seeing the movie. The sound track and score were a masterpiece. I can't say it enough: this is the best version of the whole Predator franchise. Predator 1 remains the best for all time.
Jesse Ventura said that Arnold is the most focused man i ever met. He turned down whopping 14 mil dollars for the Predator 2 in front of him before Predator 1 went out. And when they left he asked him how can you turned down 14 mil dollars? And Arnold said the timing for the second movie is not right. True professional.
Arnold asks "What the hell are you?" The Predator, while dying in disbelief that he's been beaten by a human, retorts back " What the helll ARE YOU !?!" Basically saying, maybe even congratulating, that YOU'RE the scariest monster here.
Nice analogy...but actually predator used to repeat everything that he used to hear from humans. Remember when someone kills a scorpion and Person 1 says : Thanks Person 2 says : anytime. Predator keeps on repeating it for long.
Some interpretation of "predator" mentioned in title point out that the real predator is the last to survive, so Dutch is the ultimate predator that the title is referring to.
@@calogerohuygens4430 Never thought of that!!! A very cool interpretation... A bit different but reminds me of the sci-fi novel, "I am Legend". Here the titular "legend" is not one spoken of by humans but by the zombie/vampires, a tale of the last remaining human that killed so many of their kind before fading away to become nothing more than a "legend"..
@@AdilHusain It's been a while since I saw the whole movie... I figured the "repeating" was play-back from some alien recording device, perhaps used by the Predator to document his exploits.
Explosion was epic. Electricity followed by a yellow haze, and a red ball that formed out of nothing then diminished before unleashing hell. All from a wristband. Pure awesome.
As much as I love this scene with the predator laughing diabolically, I'm just wondering if laughter/humor is something the predator species would have developed or are aware of.
It's a good bet. If your species has spent so long hunting others, I can only imagine all the hilarious stories of how various prey tripped over their own feet, cried before the end, or died from an accident while running away.
I think predators do have some kind of sense of humour, but they express it differently (through tapping their fang things together rapidly). They imitate humans when they laugh, rather than that actually being their way of expressing amusement. I saw it in a comic.
A theory I really like : the predator imitated a human's menacing laugh to tell Dutch what the device was (as Dutch was staying there looking at him, confused) In short, to give a worthy opponent a chance to escape death. (And the predator HAD to detonate his device, to not let his tech fall in the hands of another species)
My favorite scene. Here is this alien, beaten, about to get his head smashed in and Arnold say "what the hell are you?". The alien, look back at just a man who has soundly beaten him then questions him back. "What The Hell Are You?". Recognizing he is not a normal man. Love that.
Predator: **Sees the trap** Dutch: "COME OOON DOOOO IT KILL ME NAAAOOOOW!!!" Predator:**looks at him crazy and goes around the trap** Dutch: **looks at the pred after circling around** "oh you motha fucka....."
Arnold: Kill me I'm here Predator: Yeah I know wait Arnold: Com'on kill me Predator: wait I'm just looking at this beautiful leaf Arnold: Kill me you SOB Predator: Alright! Predator: F'ed
I love how even despite it being an alien species they still make it so it can give off expression. When it discovers the spike trap and looks at Dutch like "nice try asshole".
Predator imitates Billy's laugh. Cool. A sequel for a movie of this magnitude would never have been this popular. The only other option would have been a 2nd part.
As iconic and memorable as the T-800 is, Dutch is easily the best character Arnie ever played. He isn’t just charismatic and badass, he is also extremely intelligent, very vulnerable and most impressively, he grows as a character. Dutch knows strength and skill won’t beat the Predator. He needs to outsmart it. He gathers as much intel on his opponent as possible, deducing a lot of information on pure observation alone, and then uses the clever tactics to defeat the creature based on that intel. Even then, he isn’t perfect. Most of Dutch’s strategies fail due the Predator’s own intelligence and ingenuity, which helps illustrate how much of a genuine threat it is, and such mistakes result in serious consequences, namely the death of his teammates. However, he learns. With each defeat and each setback, Dutch gathers more intel. He learns from his mistakes. Even when he loses all his teammates and most of his supplies and weapons, he makes one last attempt to defeat the Predator. Not just because it is his only means of salvation, but because he finally knows what to do, he finally knows how to beat it. He takes what little resources he has and creates a battle plan that leaves no stone unturned. He’s so confident, in fact, he actually invites the Predator to battle with a loud war cry. The final battle commences and after a long, brutal struggle, Dutch ultimately, and deservedly, emerges victorious. Arnie will forever be remembered as the T-800, but there’s no denying Dutch was his best role. He isn’t just a super cool, unstoppable killing machine, he’s a skilled strategist with relatable weaknesses which he gradually learns to overcome. There's a reason the Predator only took off his mask in front of him and no else. He was truly the best the squad had to offer.
I like how the predator compliments Dutch when predator says what the hell are you because he's the first human to step up and show that Dutch is different.
Predator shows that he understands English much more than just sound bites he enjoys with the “What the hell are you?!” but backs that up with “End” when he starts up the suicide device. Such a good script. Put in the hands of an excellent director, with the perfect cast, and the best antagonist (although tbf they almost blew it with JCVD’s effort - but we have James Cameron to thank for that in part). Best 80’s action movie? I’d say so. Scared the shit out of me at scout camp when we watched it (was maybe 13 at the time).
This movie is fucking perfect. I love how Dutch screams and challenges the Predator, then when he takes off his mask he responds. Then he mimics Billy's laugh at the end
I think the Predator laughed out of irony or something, like he knew after watching Billy laugh that it was an expression of something funny just happen. So he laughed because Dutch was able to beat a high tech alien with such a primative trick... Or he was giving Dutch a fair warning that his wrist was going to explode. The laugh basically indicated: "dude you were smart enough to beat me, can you not tell by the count down my wrist is about to explode? " Maybe that's why he started laughing harder when Dutch started to run? 🤷♂️
This is what i think. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Predator repeats what Dutch says because he respects him. He also respected Billy as a true warrior and thats why he did the laugh.
Man, when I was a kid and saw this movie the first time, Arnie finally defeated him the predator activists the bomb and an evil laugh, I was scared out of my mind and hide underneath my blanket like a baby
When you finally figure out that SkyNet manufactured the Terminator based off the fact that the only known human to kill a predator 1v1 was Dutch. They modeled their killing machine after Dutch to be able to fight off any Predators that decided to come back to earth once SkyNet took over the world.
Yes, the movie still holds up well after 35 years. Remember, though, that Dutch had lots of luck in defeating the Predator, and the Predator spared him at key moments. First, it was Dutch's good fortune, a sheer accident, to discover that mud can serve as camouflage. Second, the Predator could have killed Dutch while his head was on the log or while he lifted him by the neck. He let Dutch run and crawl about, as though super confident of his victory. He respected Dutch but was also arrogant and wasted time. Third, Dutch was just plain lucky that the Predator stood directly below that heavy object. It might have missed the creature easily. My point is that all of the others were not as lucky, and not lucky enough to have gained the creature's respect. I'm pretty sure they, too, knew how to set up the sorts of traps that Dutch set up toward the end.
When I watch this movie nowadays when the Predator laughs and blows himself up I'm getting you should have gone for the head vibes. Seriously. Replace Arnolds "What the hell are you" with "I told you, you'd pay for this" and the Predator "What the hell are you" with "you should have gone for the head" and you got yourself basically the ending of infinity war.
This will always be my favorite version of the Predator. Looked the most realistic to me. I saw this movie as a kid and just read so many dark horse comics about the Predator as I could find. Late 80's, early 90's was a great time to be a kid.
@@laszlokantor2621 nope JCVD played the first concept that looked like a cricket or something. This predator is black actor named Kevin Peter Hall who also played big foot on Harry and the Hendersons.
