Hello RU-vidrs! A question I often get asked is how can I predict my 2k score so today after doing some 2k prep for a 2000m row I have coming up I have a little chat about how you might go about trying to predict your 2k score without actually doing a 2k erg test!

Saw the title "Predict your 2000 row score without... " and was so hoping it was "without going on the Erg". That's when I find it starts to get painful.

I personally favour the 4x500/0'r. If you prefer longer intervals you can do 2x1000/0'r, and if you're a sprinter you could try 8x250/0'r

I Prefer 6x330m / 15'r. To each their own though.

The old faithful 8*500 r2 is a decent marker. I don't find a lot of the "+x splits" too helpful as the wattage difference for 1 split varies massively depending on how fast you are. Nothing compares to actually crossing the 1250 mark though.

Cam, I'm also a pretty anaerobic athlete (I do my steady state workouts at roughly 25-27 splits above my 2K for UT2) and I've found that a 6x500 with 1 minute rest was about half a split faster than my 2K; I averaged 1:40.2 for the 6x500 and ended my 2K with a 1:40.8 split.

The dreaded 2K! IMHO, if done right, is as close to Dante’s inferno as one can get. The mental side of the training is the most important for me. The workouts tell you want you can do, but your mind can start to doubt.To that end, long, all out pieces, to train your ability to block the pain, 20 minute all out efforts are my go to (ouch). Or a set of ever increasing all out pieces, plenty of rest between. Or just row the monster. And, as that last 500 is simply unimaginable, the value of pick drills during cool downs, making sure your body knows what to do, when your mind is forced to go elsewhere. I plan on a negative split, so I add a second or 2 for the first 500, and If I can stand when I’m done, I chose poorly.

4x1K with 5 minute rest has always been spot on 2K+1 for me. I go faster on the shorter interval predictors.

We usually do a 1000m, 750m, 500m and then focus on try to get the feeling of the corresponding part in the 2k. So 1000m represents the first 1000, 750 represents the middle part and the last 500m should get to the end of the 2k. Usually everyone is faster but it gives a good representation.

Just tried the 6 X 500 meters, 2 min. rest. Nailed by 1:45 (or 1:44) for intervals 1-4 and 6. But was gassed and wimped out on interval 5 and just rowed a slow 2:30. Got a little aeorbic work to do still before going for the sub-7 again...

Adjusting the rest on the 6x5 I think can help get the prediction close to their split. Nice work!

Yesterday I did a 1.5k, 3k, 500m in prep for a 5k. 50 seconds rest in between each interval. I find that even with two rests at 50 seconds each I can go significantly faster than straight out 5k, about 5 split seconds. I find so much of this is psychological. My first 2k I did at an average split of 1:54. A week later I did a 5k, but I thought my Ergatta machine was going to break it down into 1k intervals, but that was my mistake. I estimated to use my same split time as my 2k at 1:54 since there would be rests, but when I flew through 1k, I was like oh man I guess we are doing this and I held that 1:54 through the whole 5k. The week prior I almost died at that same split doing the 2k. The following week I went back and redid the 2k with this new knowledge that I can do better and finished the 2k at 1:50. Psychology man! -Chris

Hi, this is the workout we did in my club one week before the 2K : 1000m@24, 500@28, 500@32 (without rest). This is your 2k+10sec. It works pretty good ! Continue what you're doing, it's great:-)

This video has some classic Cam moments! You had me do 6x500 a week before my last 2k. The first three 500's were 8 seconds faster than my 2k race pace. The last three 500's were 2 seconds faster than my 2k race pace. Does that mean I am more anaerobic?
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 3 года назад
Usually I like to do the 6x500s for the athletes as it is a decent predictor given we have the experience. With you I think there is a combination of being on the anaerobic side aswell as your 2k pace still due some improvement!

I like 4x500/1:00r and 6x 500/3:30r. I think 3:30r is lovely, but from what I heard you say, I should try cutting it down to 2:00.

@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 3 года назад
Give it a try! It will be harder but if you manage you know you can get close for the 2k. Adjusting the rest can get the prediction to your actual split but the est adjustment will depend on the athlete!

I did a 2k and got 7:28 around 2-3 months ago. I have been doing a lot of aerobic training lately, and I did 3 x 1ks at 1:51, 1:51.5 and 1:52 splits (with 7 mins break inbetween). Can i use these as a indication to predict my upcoming 2k in a week?
