Hi Margaret, lovely tutorial. Thought you might be interested in something that happens over here (UK), some of our hospitals ask for preemie hats in white with a pompom in red, orange or green, the colour indicating the health of the baby. From red, baby needing lots of checks to green a baby nearly well enough to go home. Hope your move is going well.
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 4 года назад
I love the pom pom "signals," Diane! Brilliant! You know, there are some NIC units here in the US that won't allow poms at all. 😠 (I think I remember it has something to do with the increased fuzzy fibers that could be inhaled by those compromised little lungs.) I'm not sure why every hospital has its own unique guidelines/rules. Some won't take handmade caps at all! Some want only natural fibers, etc. Regardless... I would think color-coded poms would be so encouraging for parents of preemies to see. They provide hope for the early days and excitement when they "graduate" to a new color! (My oldest was a 36 week preemie and we only had to stay in the NICU for a week but that was the longest week of my life!)

Very helpful tutorial. Thank you! I'm an advanced crocheter, but it wasn't too long ago that I started practicing it. So, I still remember being confused about reading patterns and where exactly I should place a stitch and so on. I'll be referring your tutorial to anybody I come across, who's struggling with pattern reading. Thank you for the beautiful little hat too :) (by the way, I believe you placed a single crochet, instead of a slip stitch the second time you joined the lighter color, about min. 26:00)

Thank you for the link. I love the way you start a chain. Very neat without the knot left by a slip knot.I will definitely incorporate that into my projects. I was hoping to see a video on how you start a hat project where the hat starts from the top with a magic ring that you mentioned in your Preemie Hat tutorial.
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 4 года назад
Oh, I'm sorry. That IS the way I start a hat and it's my version of a Magic Ring. It works the same way. (The link I gave you was for a hat tutorial.) I don't have one for the typical Magic Ring as there are tons of video tutorials already out there! (I mention it in this beginner video because there are several ways to start a hat and many patterns give it as an option soooo... beginners should be aware of it.) Here's one that explains it very well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p298HxgsO1s.html

Margaret... This my goals are to knit and crochet preemie/Angel blankets and hats, crochet new afghans for my five grandsons, and to crochet some prayer shawls and wraps .. I came here for the best tutorial on getting started with my teeny tiny hats... Thank you again.. I needed to refresh my memory, on how the increases go... Now I’m ready to go! I want to match my little hats to most of the blankets. Simeceill be knitted...with my ChaiGoo nine inch circs. , and some will be crocheted... Oh.. I have found 12 inch circulars...ChaiGoo Red Lace...that are perfect for hats for small kids...

Thank you for the quick and easy pattern. It is interesting to see a crochet technique I have never seen before. You use your left hand to fly the yarn around the needle. I have never seen that before. I have always use the needle to go under the thread, twist and put needle through the next stitch, grab the yarn and pull it through leaving three loops on the needle. Then, grab the yarn and pull it through two loops and again through the remaining two loops. It eliminates the "fly around" action of the your left hand and speeds up the project. The left hand is only used for tension. Always interesting to see individualized techniques!
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 4 года назад
Welcome, Diana! I'm guessing you're new to my channel since you're commenting on my crochet technique. If you watch some of my other videos, you'll also hear me say (many times) that there are no rules in crochet! Not only do crochet techniques differ but so do choices in stitch methods, ways to start hat, options for minimizing seams and have you ever seen the many different ways to crochet 2TOG??!! And yet, every method ends up with a completed project in the end! I found it interesting that you referred to a "needle" in crochet when most call it a hook! I think it's far more interesting to learn WHY people have varying techniques. For example, as I read about yours, all I could think about was how the right hand bears the brunt of the repetitive movement which isn't good for those of us with joint problems. (Ouch!) And you may be interested in my friend Sister Margaret Mary's modified technique as she's visually impaired and yet produces BEAUTIFUL work! It's fascinating! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z_VkPUK-12M.html Celebrate our differences!

Margaret... Excellent tutorial. This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. I generally use Lion Brand Baby Soft, for most of my preemie/angel hats and blankets. Baby Soft is a #3 weight... I am assuming that if I use a #3 yarn, I will need to do one more increase row . Do you agree?
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 4 года назад
Preemies come in all sizes but yes, if using a #3 and attempting to get the size I did, I think I would increase for 1 more row.

Glad you liked it, Stefanie! Call a local hospital and ask if they accept such donations. Sometimes there are groups in place that manage all donations (preemie, cancer caps, etc) and sometimes they’ll connect you right to the NICU. If there’s not something in place already, they may welcome your donations or explain they tried it in the past but it didn’t workout for whatever reason. You can also look online for organizations to mail the hats to.

Actually, I think you’re referring to row 6. And you should have completed 36 stitches when finished with it because you’re doing 18 dc and 18 chains. (You’ll hear me say, “ Double crochet, chain 1, skip a stitch.) The Chain 1 is on top of the skipped stitch below.
