Some parents react so badly over the littlest things and makes the child close that parent off. At some point kids can predict how they will react so why bother telling them certain things. This is just a fragment of an episode but it´s clear how this family is keeping a happy life fascade with lies and secrets.

@@me-oh9du Heavily religious people will criticize people based on their religious morals. But, when it comes to them breaking those rules, they end up justifying it. That is how humans do things. I think religion has more downsides than good. Religion isn't the thing that gives people morals, and it slows down progression, (and you can see this in things like creation which stops people from actually researching scientific reasons as to why things happen, and I think the Taliban believed at least at some point that unknown or foreign things, like TV, was evil, but I could be wrong). The one thing that religion has going for it is that it gives people a sense of closure when other people die, which may have some funny moral implications to it, however.

Allow themselves to die hiding the truth, or admit the truth and probably get ostracized by the family and become a homeless teenager, possibly leading to the same result. And legal medical rules require that the parents that would punish the child this way be told regardless of circumstance.

No one parent goes about "building" distrust in their kids. We don't have the manuals for this parenting thing and with all the resources we have/don't have , it's still an uncertain field. We grow up learning, from so many pple and situations around us, to be parents... If you're not a psy, U can never tell how your "best actions" will affect your kids. So its better to reserve judgementof other parents. The fictional parents here, probably communicated sometime, quiet unconscisly, that they abhorred abortion. Pretty valid stance IMO, we have the right to feel differently about this. The girl knew her parents would feel strongly about this. It wasn't a choice to save her life. She was afraid to disappoint them. I see no vilians here. Just life - that places unfortunate circumstances our way. If they knew, it could teach them apart - or not... Whichever way, it's just life. No judgement

Bear in mind that those decisions are often directed by the parents because of the lack of nationalized healthcare meaning the decision is based on cost and insurance coverage before the child's benefit. We had to leave our 14 year old son because the Dr's wanted to ask him some questions. Didn't think much of it at the time, he's the patient needing help and Dr's need to know what's happened to treat him properly.

Age of medical consent is 14 in Québec, Canada. If a teen has to be hospitalized for more then a day, the only thing the hospital is legally obligated to do is inform the parents that the teen is at the hospital, so they don't declare him missing to the police or something like that. I believe it's 16 in the rest of Canada.

The standard is the child must be able to understand the decision and its consequences Typically 13 is considered the lower limit but legally younger children can consent if they understand and older teens may not be able to if they do not.

Term in Australia is "Mature Minor" and is ultimately a decision that IF it is required to be made (ie parent and patient aren't in agreement) the medical team determine if the patient is mature enough to make their own treatment decisions or not.

In my country you're medically considered an adult at 16 (make your own decisions, confidentiality etc)... Ironically enough, except for an abortion. Then you have to be 18 or have parental consent

She is minor. It is why you can't make decision of polotical voting until 18 and can't buy alchohol yourself until you are 20(in some countries). Same with medical treatment, as a minor can't be trusted with making a medical decision themself not knowing a lot of the world or body and themself yet, hitting puperty and everything. Now she is 17, so it debatable if you think she can make decision of her own by then or not.

Maybe because she is still not an emergency (?) I mean maybe when she is in danger and needs immediate assistance they would not ask her parents consent first because they don't have the time. In this case they have time, she is conscious and her parents are also there. Another possible reason is money. I'm not from America but I think medical bills are paid by the parents and if they found out that their daughter was treated without their consent, they could sue the hospital for bodily harm/personal injury (I don't know the right term for this).

PC Response: its the hospital and they have protocols to follow they can't do anything to a child without a guardians consent the reason why i say guardian and not parents is because in some cases a child may not have a parent and may live with their uncle aunt god mother god father or be in foster care and i don't think foster parents count as that persons ACTUAL parents so the next best term would be guardians if i am wrong i am wrong but that's the PC response

Medical consent and people's kids are two of the most sensitive topics in society, throw in religion and things get real complicated real fast. Is 18 or 21 or 16 the magic number when kids get their autonomy over medical decisions? I have no idea and I doubt there is a perfect number but it's what we work with in an imperfect world. The line between an ethical and unethical situation where a parent might opt to risk their child's life is very blurry but I for one don't feel comfortable giving anyone but the parent unrestricted authority on the subject.

I would say confidentiality - otherwise they could find all sorts of pretexts to say confidentiality does not apply. It would have to be this way in order to protect confidentiality for everyone. A right does not mean anything if there are dozens of reasons for which it does not apply, or if you can invent a reason on the spur of the moment.

To answer your question: it depends. Not from the U.S nor practicing there, but where I am from it is a case by case basis determined by diagnosis and age. Minors are considered sexually independent from 14 years old and onwards, so issues related to that are not just in their whole prerogative but also to be kept as discreet as they wish, even from their parents as he or she (usually a she for obvious reasons) has no need for their consent in that case. In the U.S, don't know if there's a state in which that's different, but as far as I know once they're teenagers they DO have a right to medical privacy from their parents and Manning more or less followed procedure by only telling one of them once the patient acquiesced because surgical procedures do require parental informed consent. I'd assume it's not universal and the laws in say... Illinois are not the same as in Texas or Florida, where I'd assume parents have more legal power over their children's medical history and treatment. In topics OUTSIDE of gynecological ones there normally isn't much controversy about a parent's right to know, but as a general rule: if it's not directly relevant to the case, like say the kid twisted his ankle because he was sneaking around to see a girl his parents don't like, then it's considered improper to divulge that agains the patient's wishes. If it is relevant, like say in cases of abuse or other criminal acts performed by or onto the minor, then you should tell the parents as they're the legal guardians, not just for medical stuff but in general.

I think it's 18 in the states. I live in QC and I had my medical decisions are mine since 14. Heck go vaccinated at 16 behind my parents back for HPV.

An example of this would be if at age 12 you asked if you can get a vaccine shot or something, if you have a parent’s or guardian’s signature or note you can. (This is actually something you can get around with, it doesn’t have to be your parent, it just has to be an adult you trust) However at age 14, you can request it on your own without an adult approval.

​@@zinzolin14 modern medical recommendations say that even up into your early 20s, it's still a good idea to get the HPV vaxx since it will still provide some immunity coverage. The reason they try to get it to preteens/young teens is because they want you to have it preferably BEFORE you become sexually active as that's when it's ability to protect you is the strongest.

This is even more important post Roe vs Wade. No person ever thinks lightly about having an abortion, for all the reasons that pro-life people say (against God, killing a child etc), they're all in their head too. It's not the same as a decision to get married, move out, etc, a baby will change your life forever, especially if they have severe disabilities, it will seriously endanger the life of the mother or they are not able to financially support themselves.

@@desteny1393 I'm Welsh, and I was able to sue my doctor because he made a mistake in my operation (it was exploratory surgery on my ovary when I was 17, but he accidentally damaged the tubes and left me infertile). It is really rare though, you have to sign all sorts of wavers that say please don't sue us, with the exchange being most medical procedures are free on the NHS. They were really reasonable, but it took months and months. I imagine if you have to pay for your treatment and they mess up or otherwise don't follow the rules, you're more likely to take legal action

Laws about this issue are different from country to country and state to state. It really sucks in some places.

'Right' isn't exactly the correct word here. Ethical, in terms of medical ethics, may be what you are looking for. So lets take all the information in we have now. The mother is obviously pro life. The daughter knows her parents better than the doctors but she is also a teenager of around 17 years of age based on things she said about high school. The mother didn't want the step father to know because it is likely he will have a more severe reaction than she will. So if both parents know, what do you think could happen next based on all this information? Do you think it is likely that the daughter won't face some severe consequence like being kicked out of the house? Maybe suffer some physical or mental abuse at home more severe than she already has suffered to this point? Both possibilities seem likely so would it therefore be 'right' to have told the parents? In my view, this is why Dr Choi is wrong. He wasn't considering what could happen next after telling them and just assuming, it would appear, that the parents would just accept what is and move on.

@@cloudstone123 he was also worried about legal reprecautions, probably. sure they managed to hide it up until surgery came into question, but there was a complication after the drug they gave her. if the girl had died or had a serious complication from the drug and the parents sued the clinic for it, the secrecy would play against the med team

@@zilesis1 I'm not convinced of that. At the end when the mother asked if only she had to give consent, he voiced an objection over the father not being told. The legal requirement would be met with one parent giving consent, it wouldn't require both.
