Yes, this is very preliminary and " Down and Dirty" series of tests!
But right off the bat Krylon Low Odor Matte and Glossy are not even worth discussing.
Best overall results were from The Premier Shield and Hahnemuhle sprays.
Moab Desert Varnish darkened the over all look a tiny bit.
All three top products went on very smoothly and did not change the "Look" of the paper hardly at all.
The Matte Krylon Products were absolutely atrocious.
The Glossy Archival form Krylon went on very nicely but it totally transformed the CANON Semi Gloss paper into CANON "SUPER" Glossy paper.
Not what one would want in a sprays
The Hahnemuhle - Moab and Print Shield did not seem to affect or change the "Look" of the original Paper surface.
HOWEVER..... The original untouched paper still looks the best!
The Spraying Process, just like anything else has to be "Learned"

A little tip I learned from using aerosol cans for many years: before use, put the can in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. This results in better atomization and more even application.

Hello Jose, thanks for doing this comparison. I purchased the Hahnemuhle spray and am curious if this spray will act as the same type of barrier that would be provided from UV glass (for my photographic prints). I have a bunch of non UV glass frames I would like to use to sell some of my photography in and I would feel a lot more comfortable if they were protected. Thanks again for posting this!

I just read somewhere (cant find source) that the hahnemuehle spray ware designed to be used with both their matte and glossy paper types. Now i can only find sales pages that say "most" types of media. They do not specify glossy or matte anywhere on the site. I just found it a bit odd that you didn't test that spray on matte papers in the video. As i was under the impression that it was made for both types of media. Anyways thanks for an awesome channel for printing!

Hi Jose. I apologise for asking this as im sure you've covered it somewere, but im trying to watch as much as i can. But here it goes, when you refer to OEM inks, you are referring to original Canon inks and cartridges (or whichever manufacturer your printer is), and if so, is there a substantial difference in the dye ink thats used in the pro 100 v the pigment ink in the pro 10 in terms of longevity??
@cheo1949

Yes, OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer. The New formulation for The PRO100 is probably the best ever in the eye ink world. The PRO-10 is also very good. Which prints are longer lasting??? Both will out live you.

Hi Jose, don't you think that the best test you can run is archival spray on non coated paper (I remember your prints on watercolor drawing papers) ? I understand that testing these sprays on classic Canon papers you always use is an interesting step for fading and color cast issues with compatible inks, but I'd like you to give us advices on other papers with both OEM and PC inks Always love your videos and you "humble" behavior BTW
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 лет назад
I can get a bit overwhelming as I simply do not have the space for any meaningful Fade Testing on more than I have right now. I could do a few sample and that would be it. The main reason for using CANON Semi Gloss and PC inks is because they were declared as HIGHLY Fugitive! combination. So That is what I am trying to prove! Without they should quickly fade and with spray coating they should last several X longer. At least in theory!

I've been using Hahnemuhle spray on my Pixma Pro 100 prints. The first can I used worked great, but I am wondering why on the second can I am getting hard spots on the print. I have had about 5 prints ruined because after I spray Hahnemuhle, there is a noticeable hard coating. You mentioned spraying has to be "learned", do you have a video on this? I've tried a few different spraying techniques but am getting the same result - hardened spots on the Pro Luster canon paper
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 5 лет назад
What type.of.paper. These sprays work best on non glossy papers. Luster semigloss satin badges and best, matte.Since you went through the first can without a problem I would think maybe there is something wrong with either the spray contents, maybe it needs more thorough agitation in case some of the contents have settled. The nozzle may not be producing a nice even fine spray but more like spurts. Spraying should begin beyond the edges of the print and perpendicular travel across the print surface. There are plenty of views on spraying techniques on YT already. That's how I learned.

I was in corespondance with hahnemuhle, and their UV spray is for their fine art papers / coating. And they said it should NOT be used on any sort of Resin coated paper as it will ruin the print, specifically: Photo Glossy, Photo Luster, Photo Pearl. That said, if you were using either of those 3 papers according to Hahnemuhle it will ruin the paper. Hope that helps.

@sebastiankrawiec6465
@sebastiankrawiec6465 6 лет назад
Jose Rodriguez thanks. Are there specific types of rolling varnishes for dye-based inks if I print on canvas? I've read that many can cause smearing because water based varnishes will react with the ink.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 лет назад
Yes, you do not really want to do that as it will cause smearing. Use a solvent based spray like sold by Moab or Hahnemuhle. You might want to look at my spray video I did months ago. I am still going through the light exposure process. It will take about another 6 months.
@sebastiankrawiec6465
@sebastiankrawiec6465 6 лет назад
Jose Rodriguez good to know, thanks for taking the time to respond. I did watch the spray episode and found it informative, just was intrigued by the roll-on varnishes since I found a few online. Looking forward to seeing the results of your tests. Was thinking about doing my own when I got going with the printing and pick a varnish or two to try.
@mikeearussi
@mikeearussi 5 лет назад
@@cheo1949 Roll on water based varnishes should only be used on MATTE canvas. If you use it on satin/luster or glossy canvas the ink will lift. For satin or glossy canvas all water based coatings must be sprayed on (HVLP). And never use any water based coating on regular paper stock as the paper will absorb the water causing it to warp.

Jose: Curious: Absent scientific proof of efficacy, why would anyone want to spray the surface of a print made on one of the premium ink jet papers from Moab, Canson,Hahnemuhle, Innova, Red River etc., etc.? Does any reliable testing agency have valid data concerning the benefits of such spraying? Have any independent tests been published affirming that the sprays add longevity? It would appear that the only reliable and thoroughly tested and vetted method to protect ink jet prints would be to use a glazing with UV protection. To place your ink jet prints outside in the sun is a test that is unrealistic: Who is going to display one's prints in such a manner? Your tests are well meant of course and I am assuredly not questionning your motives. My comments are NOT directed at you, but at the manufacturers who attempt to justify the marketing of such products. Moab and Hahnemuhle: Produce evidence from realistic and valid tests on prints that are hung in normal viewing condition on a wall for a year. Read the densities of the inks and read via a spectrophotometer the colors of such prints. Compare the data with fresh dry prints and prints hung behind UV glazing. Show us the data from the prints and then let the printer decide if the sprays have any benefit.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 лет назад
I appreciate your post and no offence taken. First of all, the post application of varnish and other types of coating are traditionally almost 100% done on Canvas Photo Prints. It is meant for protection and longevity regardless of inks used. The reason I did this very unscientific test was because....well, nobody else had! I was privately asked by many to do this and I put in a substantial amount of bucks to get this done. Sprays protect most!y against environmental oxidants more than UV fading. I can say the same thing about testing done under 2000-3000 lux lights for months of continued exposure. How does that compare to real a household situation? You would need a LUX meter to figure out how much light your prints on your walls are exposed to during the day and evening. Yes putting prints out in the direct sun every day is something no one in their right mind would or should even do. BUT imagine IF some of those treated prints do well after say a month of this onslaught? That would be years in my home walls. Remember there will be some unprotected prints as well. But most importantly and the main reason for this crazy test is to see just how bad or not, the PC pro-100 inkset truly is with and without protection. But to answer your question, if you print with OEM as we all should and print on a high quality non oba type paper, you will absolutely NOT need any of these sprays. But people generally do not want to spend the money for oem inks so they want to print for 1/8 to 1/10 the cost and still have reasonable longevity. Sprays provide that. And they will allow them to have their cake and eat it too.
@Yalelax
@Yalelax 6 лет назад
Excellent points Jose. Thanks for making the effort to respond. I am not sure how the companies that test "longevity" carry out their tests, i.e., the light intensity and the "wave length". Furthermore, the longevity provided for some papers with OBAs mkes one question the entire testing process and validity. I certainly agree about papers without OBAs as being best to use if longevity is a concern. BTW, some might prefer to use the OEM inks because the ICC profiles from the paper manufacturers are easily available and generally very well constructed. Of course Precision Color constructs ICC profiles as does Jon Cone. Some have paid to ICC profiles constructed for their own printers and feel that such profiles are superior to those available from the paper manufacturer's ICC profiles AND the profiles furnished by the third party ink providers. As is almost always the case, there are many ways to achieve excellent prints. Elliot
@mikeearussi
@mikeearussi 5 лет назад
It's not just about fading. The primary purpose of spraying prints is to seal the tiny holes in the Microporous surface. These are the holes that allow the ink to penetrate the inkjet coating, but as the ink doesn't seal the holes any air pollution can also penetrate and affect the ink by either altering its color or shortening its display life. By the manufacturers adding a UV filter component to the spray it also helps to extend print display life. But if the print is going to be framed behind glass/acrylic then spraying becomes far less important s the glass acts as the protective barrier to the outside air. BTW, you must wait at least 24 hours before sealing the print to allow the inkjet water to evaporate on you'll end up sealing water into the print (which is not good).
