Brendle is a pianist's pianist. He has mastered the technique of bringing out the layers in Rachmaninoff's piano music. The result is crystal clear melodic lines and impeccable phrasing. I have heard other better-known pianistic superstars who cannot match Brendle's clarity of interpretaton. He brings into focus the other-worldly vision of this masterpiece. Brendle's playing is intently focused on the music, without the distracting mannerisms of so many of today's virtuosos.
