Thanks for your work. A number of biographers on Hitler have pointed out Hitler often did not like to have major decisions written down but issued verbally to only a few to be carried. You seems to have connected the dots on whom Hitler gave the orders to begin the Holocaust.
@@HistoryonRU-vid I'd suggest that the documented private meeting between Hitler and Himmler, behind closed doors was the Fuhrer Order. Himmler was terrified of Hitler and had one of his stomach attacks after. Evidence of the Fuhrer Principle.
I used to work as a Nazi Hunter with the Wiesenthal Center and none of us were ever able to put together such an attendance list on such a date. Congratulations. Of course other such historians, will deny your achievement because they don't have the German language skills, the knowledge of Nazi Party, the real meanings of the FührerPrinzip,and the realities reckoned by the Nazi Occupation Leadership but, thanks to you, we now know the date and the personnel who were there on that day. I am very proud that you think so although I feel I don't deserve the praise as the documentary trail was there. In 2004, I tried to track Nazi criminal Lorenz Hackenholdt who had built a gas van near Tomaszów Lubelski and had the gas chambers in Bełżec named after him. When I was at the birth and deaths registry in Obersdorf, I expected to be told that I was the third one in that day but the lady behind the counter went white when I told her the reason I was there. I spoke to Efraim Zuroff in Warsaw in April 2004 but he did not seem particularly interested which surprised me. I would have taken it further but I had a company to run and therefore did not have the time. Now I would have followed it up.
If any biographer on Hitler has no idea on what is written in Main Kampf or why has been said in numerous meetings A.H. delivered at the Reichstag, then they are not biographers to me, but biased, not to say tryin to rewrite history.

Mass shootings and executions of Jews and other groups actually started in Poland in 1939. What the Wahnsee conference did is come up with a systematic method of genocide that German genius in planning and organization could best be used.

This is an extremely valuable and well-researched contribution to the historiography of the Holocaust and to Hiitler. It provides evidence for the "Intentionalist" theory against the "Structuralist" theory.
@S. Braun. How is structuralism relevant in the context of the Holocaust? Surely the difference of academic approach is between the functional and the intentional; the latter being somewhat discredited by the body of evidence unearthed and presented by such foremost authorities as Christopher Browning.
@@elrjames7799 Some Historians (rank them as you will) use the term 'Structuralism' in virtually the same sense as 'Functionalism'. The linking of structure and function is familiar to all Sociologists. It is the belief that the causes of the Holocaust were embedded in, and predominantly determined by, the unique set of organisational factors (structures) prevailing once the the War had begun and emigration of the Jews was no longer a realistic possibility -- not that the British and the Americans were minded to help in any case. The overwhelming weight of evidence is in favour of the 'Intentionalist' interpretation. It is the evidence that determines the truth, not Christopher Browning of himself.

IMHO, there was a window of opportunity that was missed during Hans Frank's incarceration as he was returning to his religious roots and experiencing bouts of remorse. Surely he could have shed light on what exactly had taken place in that crucial meeting with Hitler that you mention. And of course there were others present at that meeting who survived the war.
The thought on Frank had occured to me as well. There will be a video in two weeks time on the post war fate of the attendees of the Wannsee Conference but there were also those that attended this meeting that lived long after the war ended. I think it highly likely that von Schirach was there for example.
I believe that looking at Hans Frank, one could also be lead to believe that he was using his "Repentance" as a last opportunity to mislead the allies; he after all was a lawyer you know.
@@alfredroyal3473 I have done some reading on Frank's "return to the faith". The Rev. Harry Gerecke, the chaplain of the 6850th Security Detachment , who was a Lutheran priest from St. Louis and a Harvard graduate had discussions with his Catholic counterpart, the Padre O'Connor who had spent a lot of time with Frank in his prison cell. The padre pointed out that Frank had bouts of remorse as he was getting close to his religious roots. When Frank was led to the gallows with the padre at his side, he was relaxed and all smiles which might indicated that he was at peace with himself. Obviously, on religious ground, the padre could not reveal anything specific about confessions or his conversations with Frank.

Like Carlos Santa Maria Pico, I too am an avid reader on the subject. I never knew about the Hanz Frank speech and yes, there are dead give aways in his words that the more significant meeting had already occurred. I had always known that the Wansee meeting was to get everyone aligned and to bloody everyone's hands in the shared guilt, but until your video with the quotes from Frank, it never dawned on me that the big order had already been given. Great work on putting everything together: A real eye-opener for me.
I am compelled to offer - yet another outstanding presentation in a long line of such by you. You never fail to impress me in terms of narration, content, wit, intensity and of course erudition, most especially in this case when the content is so heartrending. By the way how right you are concerning the Nazi's being being more intent on killing the Jews than winning the war. Nazis were very much opposed to communism and fought them for power in early 1930's Germany. Hitler also had views of slavic people that suggested holocaust of slavic peoples was coming. Hitler's hatred was not confined.
Well, Heydrich got the written order for the organization of the "final solution" by Goering in July 1941. So the decision has be made much earlier in the year and the meeting of December 12 was only for informational purposes.
That is a really good point Werner and it stands to reason that this was just to let everyone know. I think it stands to reason that Hitler had not thought this one up just before the secret meeting, however I cannot answer why there was such a long wait. I suspect that Heydrich presented Goering with a typed up letter which he signed before going off to France to loot some artworks.
@@HistoryonRU-vid Just to add: based on the so called "Nuremberg Law" the law for the protection of the German blood and honor, all legal measurements reagrding every aspect with regard to the Jewish population were executive orders given by Goering. So he was in charge with this right from the beginning. Beause of his posture, his addiction to morphine and bonvivant lifestyle Goering is to my opinion very much underestimated. The Article "I was hitler Boss" in Current History 1941 - which clearly not is based on any papers from Captain Mayr - is very intersting in this respect, as it states that the rael power belonged to Goering. And if you look at his vast competences and functions, this seems to be quite true. Especially when you look at his ancestry, as he is related to Kaiser Wilhelm II. and to Crown Prince Ruprecht of Bavaria!

That is incorrect, Churchill could not possibly have known. Couriers from Poland did arrive but much later. There was mention of the death camp at Chełmno nad Nerem in the early summer of 1942 on the BBC, articles in the press, particularly after the deportations from the Warsaw ghetto and by the end of 1942, what was happening was widely reported. But some even in the Nazi leadership did not know until the meeting described here, never mind anyone abroad.
You overstemitate the scale of which decisions Hitler did. Which is ok. Majority of legitimate historians do it and i don't blame them. They used Hitler as somewhat of a scrapegoat to give blame to and to give attention from them to Hitler. Which Hitler liked because of being officialy head of state. In reality people who did decisions in germany were mainly Heydrich and Himmler. Majority of people greatly understemitate what power Heydrich had and what he influenced. I would even say that Himmler shouldn't be called boss of Heydrich as you said in video but rather Heydrich be called boss of Himmler. Other than that i very much respect what you do. Great channel.
@@HistoryonRU-vid I can send you book if you are interested. I haven't read it because i did my own research but i probably will. Book is called "Himmler's Brain Heydrich". I have it in Slovakian language "Himmlerův Mozog Heydrich". It is from author Laurent Binet. I think in history, especialy in history from 20th and 21th century there is almost no certainty, some of these people still live - some of these organizations still exist and they have valid reasons to lie and rewrite history. As George Bush said - "it will take a while for "objective" historians to show up" while laughing in interview and saying that he doesn't care what people think about him if it isn't election day.

I suspect that Hitler may well have rehearsed his thoughts and plans with a close inner circle, say Goebbels, Bormann, Himmler and even perhaps Heydrich, as he would play such a pivotal role, in the days leading up to the December 12 meeting for Reichsleiter etal. Would be interesting if we could detect any signals of such an earlier meeting. Goebbels, Bormann and Himmler were in Berlin, so it would be easy to hold such a meeting sub rosa at almost any time, especially late at night.
Highly regarded scholar on the Holocaust, Raul Hilberg, thought Hitler compartmentalized his crimes..in this case he thought Hitler quietly told Goebbels what he wanted, and then Goebbels told Himmler to implement the Holocaust. Others in the inner circle were instructed in the same way. All the phones of the inner circle were monitored and transcribed. Somebody in the inner circle, I forget who, said something about the mass killing over the phone and was screamed at by Martin Borman, threating to have him shot if he did it again. A highly organized secret state, Hitler thought his evil doings for decades.
Strange, why was there no documentation of such a meeting if it took place, and if any dicribed subjects were discussed? Clear speculation it remains, to perpuate collective guilt, is obvious, leading to exaggerations, and false blame.

Don't discount the appeal Hitlers war on Jews had to many of the poorest Germans and Eastern Europeans. These people weren't aware of any "World Jewish Banking Conspiracy" but harbored prejudice, hatred and contempt for Jews who were then, and for centuries before, scapegoats for their own poverty. This sentiment I heard many times with comments attached like "What you mean the Jews did nothing? C'mon man!" That's a direct quote from a middle aged Pole in the mid 1980's. Many of his like thought the same thing whether they said it out loud or not.
The vast majority of the Jews in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania, and others who died in the Holocaust were not rich or "middle class" at all. They were religious (many Hasidic), poor, and on the edges of society through economic and political sanctions.
As a background factor, this was true- and always true in any place where there is a branded underclass. It is often stated that in a society incorporating slavery that the blame falls on the slave owner and slave trade. But it cannot be ignored that there is intrinsic support from some free people who gain no material benefit from the slave system whatsoever, but simply favor it because no matter how low or wretched their own condition, they always have someone to look down on.

Thank you so much for this well researched presentation. I only have one piece of criticism in two points which I present in a spirit of admiration. Point 1: Your final photo, in the section in which you refer to the call on 17 December 1941 by the evangelical churches leaders to get rid of the Jews, actually shows what appear to be two catholic bishops. A picture being worth a thousand words, as the saying goes, this distorts in my opinion your message. Much has been said about the sins of the Catholic Church and the Vatican concerning the Holocaust; very little about the attitude of other christian churches. Point 2: Your use of the singular “the Church” also may lead a lot of people to believe you are referring to the Catholic Church, when you clearly intend to speak about those seven evangelical churches, and more so when this use of the plural is used in conjunction with the photo of the bishops. This is just a detail that doesn’t erase the value of your work, but I do feel that it undermines it a little bit, which is a pity, precisely because it’s such great work.
Good points Javier. Whereas undoubtedly the tradition of hatred for Jews comes above all from the Catholic church which maintained this position for hundreds of years (and still does in some places), it cannot be denied that some Protestants also adopted this ideology too as I mention in the video. Catholics are represented as major regime criminals far more than any other group and amongst the Nazi leadership but at the same time it was Protestant areas which gave most electoral support for the Nazis. I will do more on this subject in future videos.
@@HistoryonRU-vid Thank you so much for your kind and instructive answer. :) As luck would have it, I attended a Catholic school most of my childhood that was named after Pius XII and later became keenly aware of the deserved criticism he's the object of. I remember watching at some point a British documentary that said in as many words that he had given his moral support to an assassination plot by German officers against Hitler before the beginning of the war. This surprised me and I never heard it be said anywhere else. Anyway, I'll stay tuned like always for your take on the attitude of the various Christian churches in Germany at the time. Wow, great job. We rarely hear what Hitler said about all this. We hear about the Wannsee Conference but obviously Hitler knew everything and issued orders. It's never really discussed though.
Wannsee conference initial invitation December 9th 1941 with reference to Göring's authorization letter to Heydrich dated July 31st 1941. So this prelude was important for the Nazi regional leaders, the decision was already taken before.
That is a really good question and I think it is worthy of a video. Until I do it, here is a brief response. I think that Heydrich got Goering to sign the paper authorising him to make preparations but he did not know what they would be. Therefore had it happened then, the invitees would have been discussing mass transports east. The reason the date was changed was not just because of the war in the Pacific but because the objective of the meeting had changed.
I don't think its this meeting but another one in July, 1942 i think - at Wannsee. Someone was careless and forgot the instruction to destroy the transcript of the meeting.
@@HistoryonRU-vid Hello, in "Wannsee" 1984, the RC minister asks what authority Heydrich has to implement the plans being discussed - Heydrich states they are doing so because authority has been given from the very top, otherwise, they would not be doing it...the main purpose of this meeting was to insure that everyone was in agreement that Heydrich, the SS and the Gestapo would be the "spearhead" of this effort, that all ministers agreed with this and that everyone agreed to dirty their hands equally and everyone would march in the same direction to the same tune...win or lose....

For 2 differing opinions on pope Pious XII, read Hitler's Pope by John Cornwell which is a condemnation. The pope's Jews by Gordon Thomas & The pope & Mussolini by David Kertzer are more of an apologetic on the philosemitism of Pious XII.

My whole life I have been trying to reconcile how the destruction of the Jewish population could have happened in modern times. It still amazes me that a culture like Germany’s could have ever devolved to unthinking, industrial destruction of a race. I think the great danger in our present day is the memory of this time is diminishing. When the memory fades, some society will repeat this evil.
I note that when you are discussing vile actions of the Evangelical (i.e. Lutheran) Church(es), you show a picture of Roman Catholic prelates. This is about as unhistorical as you can get.
At the end of the video (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1040">17:20</a>) there is mention of the leaders of the seven regional Evangelical Church stating that there is no place in the church for Jews and Germany should be rid of them but the photograph is of Catholic bishops instead. Also, since Jews were not in the Evangelical Church in any case, it is unclear how they could be excluded. What does this mean?
Having read many books (NONFICTION)on a variety of aspects that ether contributed or resulted from this second global conflagration, I'm gratefully given further 'insight' to historic events and how they were 'planned to be 'executed'. Appalling to think that one man could surround himself by so many angry, miserable and pathetic examples of humanity. I use that last term very loosely! Millions upon millions were made to sacrifice their lives, their families heartbroken at the loss, all for this miserable little 'corporal'! Me too but I had heard these bits of Frank's speech and Goebbels' diary before. There's no concluding proof here but he makes a really strong point, about this having been when and where the real decision was made, and the Wannsee Conference being about putting this into practice.
There are three references of any importance here, all of which I refer to - the diary of Goebbels, the speech of Frank and the correspondence of Loehse. I even given the alternate translations of Goebbels quote of Hitler - have to make a clean sweep; which is German is closer to 'have to clean the table'.
I was wondering who the Nazis began murdering en masse first. Was it Jewish people or Soviet POWs by carbon monoxide in those vans in Poland? I’ve read varying accounts and was very curious. Thanks for another great addition!
That is a hard question to answer Mary and there are those that twist it to suit their own bias. In my opinion, the first people to be murdered en masse were those deemed mentally or physically inferior in the T4 programme. Most were Germans. However at the same time mass killings had started in Poland too. So it is difficult to give a straight answer to this question. Soviet POWs were only captured from June 1941 so it was not them.
You are mixing the two conferences up. Heydrich was at the Wannsee Conference, not at this secret meeting called by Hitler to tell his henchmen of his plans.
Thank you for this, and thank you for admitting the advantage of hindsight, so many monday morning quarterbacks seem to believe that they are so much morally superior than the leaders of yesteryear. They do not realize what a benefit hindsight is. They also have never felt the pressures that our leaders (the allies) had to deal with. Also the incredible advance in weapons technology.

December '41 seems late to me, afterall, the Einsatzgruppen had been doing their thing in the east for quite a while at that point. I'd be willing to bet there was probably an even earlier meeting.
I have read an English translation of the Wannsee Conference notes. I didn’t see any mention of gas chambers or Crematory ovens. Yet, the movie Conspiracy clearly has much discussion on that. Can any one explain this with documentation and facts?
So what is classified as Evangelicals? Is that Catholic and Lutheran or is it was we classify Evangelical today which is anything who believes in "born again" Christianity?
I think I would refer to the born again crowd as being Christians as what they believe in appears to me to be somewhat similar to the message of the Bible whereas the Protestant religions were attempts to reform previous churches but are old enough to have their own dogma thrown in and Catholicism is based on dogma with a elements of the Bible as well as pre Christian native religions thrown in.
Unfortunately some of Luther's later writings are very antisemitic which Nazis and church leaders latched onto. A history of the German Church during the Nazi period would be a welcome video.
The Majority of the Lutheran Church in Germany (Evangelical Lutherans) either supported the Nazi War Effort or even adopted the new "State Religion" of Protestantism unified with worshiping the Shwasticka (in replacing the cross) and making, as much as possible, a new type of Christianity devoid of Jewish influence (a merciful Christ and the Old Testament). Certainly, there were Prostestant opponents to the Nazis but they were in the minority. The Catholic Church, while still preaching "deicide" against the Jews during Holy Week, was an opponent of Nazism during the Second World War and did shelter Jews in greater Germany in certain situations. Look up the lead Catholic Cardinal in Germany during World War 2 -- Cardinal von Faulhaber of Munich, and how he did what he could to oppose anti-Semitism during the war. (note, I am not Catholic). They were not "born again" but called Evangelicals .
Killing Jews became more important than winning the war? I must say I find this a bit hard to process. Maybe in Hitler's mind but no one would have agreed with that in high military circles, we know that they didn't obey every order at the end like the one about killing every allied pilot who parachuted in Germany, General Koller took it to Kaltenbrunner and said it was a criminal order and that it would only bring trouble after the war. Kaltenbrunner said he agreed and they quietly arranged for the pilots to be mixed in with the other prisoners. They liked him but not that much, they all knew that he had gone a little 'elsewhere' at the end of the war. As to declaring war on the US, if you had an ally, wouldn't you like him to keep his word? They were already at war anyway, Roosevelt openly helping Britain and declaring open season on all German ships was more than enough to be considered a declaration of war by the US plus the leak of Rainbow 5 left no doubt as to Roosevelt's real intentions.
The Holocaust really began with the German invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. Hitler could not have embarked on a war against the Jews without using the fog of war as a cover. That is one of reasons for Operation Barbarossa. Throughout the war, Hitler always gave priority to the killing of unarmed Jews over defeating the Allies. Such was Hitler's pathological hatred of the Jews.
The Bolsheviks were financed by the industrial working classes until such time as they seized power and then they helped themselves to the treasury. The leader was Lenin - a Christian, a member of the same religion as Hitler and the Tsars who had been murdering Jews for centuries.

Germany Wasn't obligated to go to war as Japan's ally in December 1941 (the military alliance was purely defensive and Japan was the aggressor) in the same way Japan didn't go to war with the Soviet Union when Germany invaded in June. Not sure the idea of a free hand to try exterminating all European Jews is convincing as persuading AH to act as he did. Christopher Browning dates that intention to October, when Franco's request to take back Spanish Jews and ship them to Morocco was denied.
Franco allowed over 40,000 Jews transit through Spain by escaping through routes in the Pyrenees. He also offered shelter to allied airman and other refugees. Spanish embassies in Eastern Europe also would grant citizenship to ANY Jew, not jus those with Spanish roots, who applied. Franco also, rather unbelievably, allowed the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Refugee Aid to openly operate in Barcelona in a hotel suite. The Nazis were infuriated by this, but the Spanish, under pressure, would close one office down and allow the Jewish Committee to open another to aide refugees in a different location in Barcelona. Although Jews quietly returned to Spain in the late 1800's and opened Synagogues in major cities, they were still official banned from Spain until the repeal of the Alhambra Decree in 1964. Franco's offer of refugee camps for French Jews persecuted by the Vichy French in North Africa (many of whom spoke Ladino, a form of Spanish) was genuine, but not necessary after the allies invaded North Africa.
They killed the old, disabled, and mentally ill in the US, but they stopped, when the families got word their family members were getting calls that their loved one died from thing's that didn't make sense. No, they did not deliberately "kill" old people in the USA, and euthanasia was not an official government policy of any state. Where the USA is guilty is genocide against Native Americans in the 1800's, racist testing of African Americans in the Tuskegee Project, and racial discrimination and lynching's, primarily in the South, through the mid 60's. They also sterilized the mentally ill through Eugenics. However, the USA has nowhere near the murderous policies of the Nazis. No way.
In 16.5 years on RU-vid, I have never had a comment that occupied so much of my time thinking about it. I had not thought of this before so pulled out the records of the meeting between the Mufti and Hitler on 30 November 1941. I have come to the conclusion that there is no link but I might yet change my mind. I think Hitler decided sometime after Pearl Harbor, but if that is the case how do we explain Goering's letter to Heydrich five months earlier or the mass shootings that accompanied the advance of the Wehrmacht into the USSR?
