There is a lot of misinformation in this video. 85 octane should not be used in a flex-fuel vehicle, 85 octane is sold at higher high altitudes because it's cheaper and carburetors tolerate it well with the lower atmospheric pressure, it is not the same as E85 (85% ethanol). If a motor is tuned to run on 87 octane you will see little to no benefit going to a higher octane. Several newer vehicles that are tuned to run on premium can detect the fuel octane and will "de-tune" themselves to prevent misfires and engine knock with regular, thus "recommended" vs "required." You lose power and efficiency, but don't damage the engine as long as you meet the "required" octane. Regardless of the octane you use, you should always quality gas. I do agree with recommending top-tier certified fuel due to the additional cleaners. Some companies only certified their "premium," while others certified all of their fuel. Bottom line read your vehicle manual for the minimum required fuel octane, and get your gas from a good source. Regarding the warranty, if they say the required octane is 87, it is unlawful for them to void your warranty for using 87 octane. However, even if you're using premium they can deny warranty claims due to damage caused by "bad" gas.

Thank you for the feedback and advise! The comment on the 85 octane, was referring to the low octane available in Colorado, not the E85 or flex-fuel, and absolutely would not recommend it to anyone. Thank you for all of the knowledge and advice, we will share it.

Wow, agree that there is a lot of misinformation presented. Couldn't finish watching.... "...the lower the number the higher resistance that it has to burning..." The octane number is the ability to resist 'knocking' or 'pinging', or premature combustion. The higher the number, the greater ability to resist premature combustion. So the higher the number, the greater 'resistance to burning'. For an engine to run optimally, the timing of combustion is critical. With lower octane fuels, the high compression and engine heat of larger engines can cause the fuel to ignite prematurely. That is, it can ignite without the spark from the spark plug (knocking) (ie less resistance to burning, or will burn more easily). Ignition in two opposing combustion chambers at the same time can seriously damage an engine. Many newer vehicles can detect premature firing and prevent the opposing chamber from 'firing', minimising engine damage. Though that makes the engine less efficient. Using higher octane fuel in a vehicle recommending 87 octane is of no benefit. The ability to resist premature ignition is not necessary in a relatively lower compression engine. Assuming the vehicle has adequate measures to detect premature firing, using lower octane in one 'recommending' higher octane could be less effficient (fuel in chamber prevented from firing is not burned or 'wasted'). If vehicle is 'high performance' (ie requiring 94 octane) or turbo-charged, I would think it's risky to use lower octane fuels as the risk of premature firing is even greater. As previously mentioned, 'recommended' vs 'required' is an important distinction. www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/octane.shtml

I couldn't watch 35 mins of what should be a straightforward answer but appreciate the info I did hear. I was wondering about Top Tier detergent gasoline and maybe using mid-grade. But I think the answer is in terms of performance the octane rating is what matters. The Top Tier gas just helps prevent deposit buildup.

Costco / Sam's Club 91 Octane: $4.5 / gal vs other gas stations :$5 /gal. So 50 cent difference and assume 10 gal vehicle, then it would have been $5 saved each time. So you will need to fuel up 24 times in a year to make up the membership cost while you can also enjoy all those wholesale household items, car tires, extended warranties on electronics, and rebates etc.

When I first got my 2016 mdx I used cheap gas for the first month. I started hearing the engine a little more, then I have a tracker in my truck and it said sensor 1 misfires . Acura replaced it and using plus. Premium recommended but my pocket 😫 Upgraded to 2019 mdx and heard the same thing and sure enough, they had to replace sensor and run it to pass inspection 😳 very rarely do I put regular gas. When taking long distance driving and will burn it out. It will not show on your dashboard soo be careful

If you bought the car brand new, it takes a while for engine knock (the noise you was hearing) when the wrong octane, wrong oil, etc, is used. Long story to explain the knock/noise you was hearing...was it a used vehicle? If so, the damage was already done before you bought it.

I just bought a 2017 MDX and my second job won’t pay for premium when I use it occasionally for road trips. I’m assuming (haven’t tried yet) my fuel economy will decline when I use regular fuel. Can I I justify telling him he could give me $100 in premium fuel or $105 in regular fuel as the economy will decrease? Any thoughts would be helpful thanks.

That price does not include tires or maintenance! $350 is on the low end of the premium price and it varies by state. Also I see how fast the miles states as I press the gas and depends on which mode I am in. Also the 2018 has eco mode. Does Premium really premium at Sam's club?

As a former fuel dispatcher, the gas that is loaded at the terminals is all the same, the difference, is name brand fuel has additives in them. These are cleaners in theory for the engine and also markers. ExxonMobil now has additives for diesel as well. So they can test the product at gas stations that have a contract with them, to ensure they're buying their brand. To use the Houston market as an example, there are two major loading terminals (Kinder Morgan and Magellan) where you can basically any brand of fuel as long as that supplier (say Shell) ships or buy product there, and has their additive on hand. If they run out of the additive, you won't be able load that brand there, and will have to load it somewhere else.

My 06 TSX, 08 RDX, and 11 MDX required +91 Octane. My 18 RLX Sport Hybrid 3.5L DI and 19 MDX Sport Hybrid 3.0L PI has the 87 Min/91 recommended sticker. I always use 91 octane from Sam's club or Costco, depending on which line is shorter since they are across the street from each other. Using top tier fuel is also a benefit for Acura engines. Zero fuel, mpg, or performance issues using +91 Octane w/ or w/o top tier formula of +17 years of owning Acuras.

is it the same engine (MDX) as the pilot, at least the 2023 model. right? the pilot does not need 91. did Acura add something more to the MDX?
@mrgold3591
@mrgold3591 7 месяцев назад
@@MoMoPuppy23 The 07-13 MDX had a 3.7L V-6 that was ECU tuned for 91 octane only. The +14 MDX switched to DI 3.5L V-6 with a tune that can adjust for 87-91 octane (max performance at 91 octane). The MDX Pilot uses very similar 3.5L DI engine; but, the ECU is tuned for 87 Octane. You wouldn't get the same max performance with the Pilot 3.5L compared to the MDX 3.5L at +91 Octane. They both use the same sh-awd system; but, the MDX suspension leans more sporty performance and pilot leans more utility in handling and sh-awd function.

Always go with the manufacturer recommend/requirements, no matter what gas prices are. Plus these guys aren't 100% accurate. Before gasoline gets injected into the engine, the injectors are effected by the fuel first, so it's bes to go with the recommendation/requirements.

I legit didn’t realize until recently my MDX needed it. I’ve been having all these unexplained issues with my engine. I’ve been using it for over 8 years not realizing. I’m using premium for 2 months and seeing if I notice the issues slow down. Engine misfires constantly and def notice issue with my transmission. I’d definitely say it’s a gas eater too. I’ll update soon.
