About This Series
Formerly known as 'No Milk Today', this channel is dedicated to a total food self-sufficiency project. Max aims to spend a year from September 2022 to September 2023 only eating and drinking food produced on his small farm in the South West of England - and only allowing himself two imports - salt and tap water.
This series was adapted for BBC Radio 4, ‘Growing Solo’, available from April 22nd 2024

Such a wet late year! You're not alone in felling disheartened about growing. Great episode as always.

Ah thanks Kev. you are such a consistent friend to this channel. it really means a lot. Weather awful. Wheat in - just - but still no main crop potatoes as the wet soil keeps on jamming up the ridging plough. hope all is ok with you and yours. Max

Seasoned grape prunings make an excellent barbecue smoke. The barrels from the aging process do as well...

They do. I burn mine as I go along as I like the French expression chariot du feu. or is it de feu? Well I like having a fire as I go….thanks for taking the time to comment. Max

@@MaxGrowingSolo Barbeque economics should power the agricultural system as evidenced by the fabulous harvest episode.

It's great to see hopeful spring weather, and garden plans being started. And finding buried treasure! Such a blessing. Mashed potatoes! Maybe you should grow Sarpo Mira potatoes this year? The most blight resistant variety, and the heaviest producer. Have you watched the potato reveals on Allotment Diary? He grows phenomenal crops of potatoes in 30 litre pots stacked together in about 4 square metres. It's potato porn for self supporters!

I’ve got Deseree as main crop this year and some Maris Baird as my first earlies. My issue with the veg is that I’m definitely not organised enough. keeping my self in bread and dairy takes up loads of time. Must do better. Thanks for being there. Max

@@MaxGrowingSolo Feeding oneself is certainly a worthy occupation. Barring frost, I found no dig potatoes to be a tremendously rewarding venture this season. I must have grown about 200 kg, many tiddlers which are still quite edible, and lots of large ones. Enough to keep body and soul together for the year, and supplement the hens' grain. I've bought several large round bales (300 kg each) of rain damaged straw from a farmer for $20 each. It made simple work of mulching the spuds with a pitchfork. Then nothing to do for 3 months until treasure hunting time. Do I detect a hint of a second season of No Milk Today? I do hope so! I am working towards producing a much greater proportion of my diet from my land. It seems criminal to have this small farm, then buy groceries.

Another good one. I feel your pain with everything being too wet, here in Scotland we are still getting hard frost's and my tunnel was shredded again in the winter storms so l cannot even start there until we re build it again. Enjoy those tatties and hopefully you saved some leeks to go with it.

I have SO many leeks we decided to plough in the rest as they would go to seed before being eaten. I do have - a few new season greens - mainly volunteer mustard in the polytunnel and some salad and spinach. SO sorry to hear about your tunnel - we lost ours last year in Storm Unis. The spuds were really nice. All the best, chin up with this weather. Max
