This is very helpful. I wish Bernina made a way to move your needle one bit to the right, but still allowed you to use a piecing foot. They need to make a scant quarter inch foot.
I have a Bernina B530. It does not have a fancy sensor. When the straight stitch plate is on and I have my #57 foot, I get a perfect scant 1/4" with 1 needle click to the right which clears the hole and the foot fine. If you don't have a sensor plate, don't tell the machine you have a straight stitch plate, and do same. I have Juki Kirei...it senses a straight stitch plate, and it overrides and needle movement. I would imagine others are same.
This was so very helpful. One of the things that I miss on my Bernina is having that narrow foot instead of those super wide feet that they now make. Your tips will be very useful. Thank you for sharing. PS: Your quilt hanging behind you is beautiful.
Wonderful video. I piece with my Bernina B530 and my #57 foot (I would never call it dreaded). That foot is the BEST guide foot. Why? On my machine, I can do one click to the right and still stay within the confines of the foot and stitch plate. That delivers a perfect scant 1/4". It is not sharp and flimsy like other which bend and snag fabric. I don't have to worry about eyeballing a fractional thread width and my needle position does it all. The foot in this usage is a beast and worth every penny. (Sewing machines with sensors for plate switch would not allow this.). I now piece with Wonderfil DecoBob 80Wt. It is fine and strong. I buy Microtex needles in bulk to save money. Now, IMV, a scant 1/4" should not be used when you are sewing blocks that need 1/4 head room like flying geese. Test blocks are always a guide.
Hi- I wondered why you referred to the 57 foot at the ‘dreaded 57 with a flange’? I’m new to Bernina so I bought the 57 with a flange thinking it would do the trick. Please advise. Thank you.
It is a personal choice, we are lucky to have so many options with our machines. I would suggest that the message from @notesfromleisa-land7893 below is an excellent idea to help with a scant ¼" and a foot 57.
