I have a rabbit geting ready to have babbies and the weather outside is cold and getting colder. Honeslty, it isn't really anything to worry about. As long as she has the babies in the nest box and pulls some fur they will do just fine.
Thanks for this! Our doe is due to give birth in a couple of days. This will be her second litter, but the last one was during summer. The temps will get down into the teens a few days after she gives birth… I was debating on getting a heating pad? We currently have some under their water bottles. (actually one is an upside down chick warmer. It works haha) anyway I think I’m just gonna cram as much hay as possible in the den area of their cage. She ignored the nest box last time and gave birth in there. Thanks again!
I love watching your rabbit videos. Trying to learn as much as possible before spring. Did you ever think of doing a natural ground borrow concept for their housing? I’ve read about it n seems interesting but more of a pain..? Thought you would have some words of wisdom 🙂
I don't see anything wrong with it myself but like you said it is more work and more of a pain. There are also more risks of rabbits contracting parasites if in contact with the ground. How big of a risk that is depends on lots of things so it may not be an issue. To me, keeping them in cages is much cleaner and easier. Just my personal opinion though.
I always wish my does where as reliable as your history lol.. 1 does due soon she usualy grabs hay n carries it around even when not pregnant ..my momma who just had her babies 2 days ago had been doing that with hay and paper shreds (indoor bunny) for TWO WEEKS!
One of my doe due in two weeks has started doing that as well, starting one week ago. I can't figure out what she is trying to do other than making a big mess of hay in the cage.
Sometimes they do crazy things. Most of my rabbits don't display any signs until the day they are going to have the babies. but sometimes you get a rabbit that is overly enthusiastic and starts building nests way early.
Lol same. My first time doe started making a nest at day 21 or 22 but luckily didn't give birth till day 27. I freaked out and gave her a nest box since it was my first time with a prego rabbit. All is well that ends well
I did learn something. Never saw a wire litter box but that would be great in summer for ventilation. The cardboard is a great idea for winter or do you use cardboard for all season? The wire box could be set down in hot water to clean but with the disposable cardboard very little cleaning. Thanks for sharing. Will look forward to seeing the babies.
I typically don't breed in the hottest part of summer but I do use the same nest box all year long. It works very well for all of my litters. I would suggest that you at least put a cardboard layer on the bottom to keep them from getting their legs caught in the wire but you could leave it off of the sides to allow for ventilation in the summer time.
Awesome. Good luck with your upcoming litter. I like straw better myself because it doesn't tend to get moldy as easily as hay does. I am sure hay would work just fine though.
My rabbit had babies 3 days ago I've lost 2 so far. Her First litter. She was panicking so I helped her tear some fur out as her nipples where not exposed. As soon as I did that, she was able to cover her babies alot better but it's only 38⁰ here and I am worried they will all die. I was thinking to get a heat lamp? Mama is having a hard time keeping them covered and she has stepped on them cutting 2 of their skins. What should I do?
I am so sorry for the slow response. You could add a heat lamp if you want to but I have never found that necessary. Sounds like the issues you are having is just due to it being a first time mom. You can try shelving the babies by bringing them inside and only bringing them out a few times a day for feeding. I am afraid I don't have great advice for keeping the mom from stepping on them. It is one of those things that you just kind of have to let her figure out on her own and hope for the best. I hope you didn't lose them all but if you did, she will most likely do much better on her next litter.
nothing different really. As long as the rabbit uses the nest box the babies tend to do just fine. I don't get negative temps that often but I have not lost any babies to the cold when using this method
hey my doe is killing her kits 2 litters now an both have froze over before getting to them I don't want them in the house because cps has choosen to take my children over this letting them loose. so in house not going to happen. any ways 2 litters now! both frozen with in an hour. what do I do? should I just buy a new one?
meg Martinez You have to be there while she’s giving a birth. You’ll have to tuck them in the nest then you’ll see if she’s gonna take care of them. If they die again you can try to breed her with another male, sometimes that helps.
Dario gIllan it’s not the baby’s I caught the first litter before she could an then they froze because the electricity went out but in her cage an she didn’t try to sit on them to keep warm or keep them tucked
I am so sorry to hear that. It may be time indeed to replace her. If she is having the babies in the nestbox and pulling fur, they should be fine no matter how cold it gets.
Sure. Not much going on with them right now though. They are just hanging out in the cold weather. I will see if i can't get a video together on them soon though.
give her about a week just to make sure and then go ahead and rebreed her. Sounds like she wasn't pregnant for whatever reason. Good luck with the next round.
@@jamnana8425 my doe is almost 2 years old , she absorbs them before giving birth ...day 19_ 21 of her pregnancy , she did this last time and i thing she has done the same today
I think you ned to change the doe you ned to remove her from breeding proses or keep her as a pet or try it end 1 more time fi she do it again remove her
