Preparing the Space Part 2 | A Place to Sleep | My Central Portugal Farm #28

Girl Meets Farm - Portugal

Part 2 of the clean-up process so I can move to the farm. I try to get help cleaning up the land while I continue the structure cleanup. It is fire season and all farms need to be cleared or risk a fine from the municipality. I build an IKEA bed - which is a lot harder than I thought!
I'm racing against time with one more day until I check out of the comfort of the Airbnb! Things didn't quite go as fast as I hoped and also materials where a lot harder to come by, so I have to make due with what I can and just get the bed together so I have somewhere to sleep. I figured I can do the rest while I'm at the farm.

About Girl Meets Farm:
I'm Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!
This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I've never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.
Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.
Thank you for joining our journey!

Lime wash the walls,quick and easy and get room set,just so u can live in it. The outside is majorly important,talk with neighbours and others locally (and RU-vid creators who live there,there are lots) and get recommendations for help.

That's clever to think ahead and buy wood for winter now. Summer is the perfect time to do that. Best woods for fire are olive and acacia because they burn very slowly and give a lot of heat. But anything that you find around the farm is good, like dead branches, and prunnings. When you go driving around you can also collect pine cones from under pine trees and even eucalyptus leaves (the ones shaped like a banana, plenty in forests) to use as tinder to start the fire in winter. Keep a few plastic bags with you in the car, you never know when you'll find some good things by the side of the road.

Hi Donna, thanks for that great tip! I've actually been seeing loads of fallen pine cones and have been thinking about doing just that. Going to keep a bag in the car from now on ;)

What a girl ,I wish more would have your courage,what a journey ,life is so short ,I can't wait to see the great things you will accomplish. One thing you may consider is putting up a plastic on the ceiling over your bed at least that roof will let in a lot of dust .Blessings!

You're doing an incredible job! Hang in there, and plan it out for the long haul. You're at the beginning of an amazing journey. You built a bed for goodness sakes.... Wow! I might have not had the will power to scrub all those walls early on. I'd take the easy way out and build a simply wooden frame and hang king sized sheets or rugs up for temporary walls around my bed area... at least until I could paint. Your way is probably so much cleaner though! My best wishes on your incredible journey!

Love the new intro. You have been busy! Farm girls should have a good small pocket knife. Good for opening bed sacks, trimming vines, cutting veggies in the garden and general work around the farm. Single blade, locking in place, not too big, not to small. Never too early to stock up on fire wood, good for you! Also a good time to look for drafty spots, before it gets cold. As for the mower issue....check your local government. Mowers and flail mowers can cause sparks when they contact rocks. Sparks and dry season are not a good combo. Btw MAM Filman are knives made in Portugal. Cheap and decent quality. Even make a grape harvesting knife.....if you know anyone who grows grapes...hehehehe. Thanks again. Do not over do, the farm will be there tomorrow!!!!
@GirlMeetsFarm
@GirlMeetsFarm 2 года назад
Thanks Steve! Oooh a pocket knife, how handy! I'm going to look into that brand, that sounds like a top idea! I'm gonna need more pockets! haha.. I did later check the rules around the mowing/strimming and it is for fire risk. Only trimmers allowed at this time as everything is so, so dry. Thanks! :)

@@GirlMeetsFarm Sometime soon it will be time to cut off the growing tips of the vines, so that they concentrate their energy on the fruit and not on growing more. Ask your farm neighbours or -- better still -- keep an eye on their vines to see when they do it and how much they cut off. The smaller twigs growing around the trunk are also cut off. It's called "desladroar a vinha" and literally means taking away the vine thiefs, that are thieving the energy of the vines. The cut-offs are good for feeding goats & sheep provided they've not been sprayed with pesticides. If your neighbours have goats or sheep, you could collect all the vine trimmings and give it to them. You never know... a goat cheese could come back your way sometime... The grass on the vineyard looks ok, what we see on the video is not too long. You can leave it, it'll all dry up soon.

Hi, you have been busy, you will find there's always something that needs doing. You have a livable space now and you can work from there. It's a big room, so even if you choose to work on one half,move stuff and finish the other half it's all good to go. Toilet area+ shower area too. You'll get it done to your standards. It's getting hotter, a ceiling fan,with light I do recommend, as I use them my self,good buy that keeps the air moving. Drink plenty of water, chill inbetween jobs and stay safe. A small trailer you may find useful....at a later or sooner date. Enjoyed your video.

I don't mean to put you off, but if you are planning to live in the farm permanently, I must tell you that from October onwards nights will be getting very cold and you need to have your ceiling well insulated, sealed and lined with wood or other suitable material. If you don't get it done before the end of summer you won't be able to live there, because the wind and damp will blow through. That should be your TOP priority. There are many contractors that can do that, including carpenters. Ask around.

Hi Chris.. (you don't have agree) you shouldn't have invested in a nice bed just yet. Instead and If I were you (which I ain't), I would have bought a campbed or something cheaper. Why? But you do need to seal it with insulation and wood to create a protection for the interior if you want to live there. I don't know what your plans are for the house, but if you are going to have a new roof in the future, you could also make the walls & roof a bit higher to have space to install another floor, and use the space under the roof for living space, with Velux roof windows or mansard windows.
