I hope one day I can find some people to join with and get a larger boat with 2 masters and it would honestly make everything easier on everyone. lower the costs like sharing with roommates except its always vacations, and the money stretches in many livable areas. I suppose a catamaran with two master hulls would be perfect.

In the RV world we use the same type of white hoses to indicate clean water just as you used on the dock. However, people do horrendous things with those hoses and we quickly learned to carry our own hose. I could see people putting that hose down a toilet to help flush a tank….Be well and safe travels.
@SailorJames

That hose belongs to a specific charter boat that I spoke with and there is no pump out on that dock so I know the hose is fine, I have my own hose that I use if it’s on a dock with a pump out because I have seen the same thing

Noticed u like Lentils over rice, U can survive on that, taste good and cheap. Here is a recipe to make Lentils & Rice in one pot. Single serving Lentils & Rice = 1/4 cup Lentils (pre-soak 2 hours) + 1/4 cup long grain rice + seasonings (pepper, salt, cayenne, paprika) + Butter + 1 cup water, boil 5 minutes, turn stove on low for 20 minutes. By pre-soaking Lentils the Lentils & Rice take the same time to cook in the same pot.

also, as a retired professional climbing guide I'd say your solo mast climbing rig could be even safer than being helped up. A toprope belayed below doubles the load, someone else may be controlling the gear, and being lowered off sucks v. rapelling for the same reason. Safer and more efficient to do it yourself--crew could be doing something else.

@SailorJames

Not a dumb question, you can’t clean under them if the boat stays in the slings, but it’s easy enough to scrap this small areas once back in the water which is what I did, just didn’t film it 👍🏻

Cheers, mate! Lots of good stuff in this, which really sets the bar between what I do - coastal family cruising - and the huge logistics in what you do. I have mast steps on my 'tub'. The guy I bought my boat from had prepared her for a Transatlantic passage and fitted radar and the steps. I've used them and appreciate the structural compromise, re: weakening of the mast. Just wondered, as a blue water cruiser, is this a real consideration?! From your background in LA, one of the most 'consumer societies' in the world, along with any western greed led societies, the way you are living your life is what many of us truly aspire to. You are doing it and your videos refreshingly show us that the transition is not so seamless. A lot of hard work, but you know what thats worth. Good on you, sir!

Hey James, just curious ... you mentioned exchanging currency at the end of the video ... I really wish that you had touched on that further -- I'm planning on doing what you are doing once I retire in a few more years. Do you carry travelers checks that you exchange country to country, reasonably amount of cash kept on the boat, use bank wires from an account back in the US, or use credit cards to get advances? I've always wondered what everyone doing a does on these "round-the-world excursions."

Hey James great video. Hey, on a side note ... when you are on a long passage have you ever become so tired you just need to stop for a bit and get some sleep? Is it acceptable to heave to in the middle of the ocean and just catch a 4 or 5 hour nap? I know you are supposed to be on watch at all time, but if you did indeed heave to, would it be acceptable/allowable to sleep for a few hours?
@SailorJames
@SailorJames Год назад
There are no rules in the middle of the ocean and it’s only your life and ship you are putting at risk. Solo sailors are not always on watch, it’s not possible. I sleep in 2 hour increments at night with alarms set and an AIS that would warm me of most ships. Yes you could heave too and sleep if needed but in over 8000nm sailing solo I have never needed to.
