Interesting method, you probably could have done better with HCl alone. I always got 80-90% yields using 20% acid that I bought over the counter. (The loss was due to the effort required to fully dry it)

Equal mol weight of MSG and HCL should work good. Glutamic acid solubility in water is 7.5 g/L (20 °C) so that is what you max loose and monosodium glutamate is very cheap.

Do you still need iodomethane?

being you told me about the membrane video was involving glutamic acid, I went and made some:2C5H8NO4Na + H2SO4 => 2C5H9NO4 + Na2S04, which the Glutamic acid isn't very water soluble and the sodium sulfate is hygroscopic so I did a cold water wash and decantation. then I watch this and see you used citric acid, then HCl, why. There an effect on the material? Will I be able to use my α-glutamic acid, does it require citric and HCl that can be added afterward?(I made a lot of that shit) I've made some interesting hydrogels Playing around. Tetra amine copper does cross link it as well. What it the crosslinking property that decides Anion or Cation? I'm making a hydrogel to make H2SO4 using protein bottles with the gel in the cap. I just need to understand the difference so I don't make the wrong ones. I'm Using HUGE PbO2 anodes. (It's a great oxidizer, if you can get rid of it. I worry about burning a whole in the damn thing within 5 minutes.
