This is an old-fashioned slow cooker recipe for delicious apple butter - a cozy taste of autumn! This recipe makes seven half-pint (8 oz.) jelly jars of apple butter.
Here is a link to the steam canner in the video: amzn.to/3lS8Xd2
(Amazon affiliate link)
INGREDIENTS:
* 6 lbs of apples, cored and sliced (I used Fuji. The smaller the pieces you start with, the quicker they will cook!)
* 2 cups white sugar (You can use all white sugar if you prefer, but I don't think I would use all brown sugar.)
* 2 cups brown sugar
* 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
* 1 tsp. nutmeg
* 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
* 1/2 tsp. salt
* ~ 1/8 tsp. allspice
Thanks for watching!

Wonderful recipe.. Very similar to the one I use.. Only difference is I don't peel the Apples, + add the juice of 1 Naval Orange --- To start it, I put the chopped Apples (I use a mix of McIntosh & Granny Smith) in a large Pot on the Stove-Top, add 3 cups fresh Apple Cider and cook until soft.. Then I puree them with the Emulsion Blender.. Once this is done, I then transfer them to the Crock Pot, add the sugars and seasoning and let it cook down to the desired thickness... Starting it on the Stove was a huge time saver, and because I had already pureed them, I was able to fit much more Apples in the Crock Pot.. Thanks for posting! :o)

Here's a helpful tip for you... White sugar + Molasses = Brown sugar I use my kitchen aid mixer and add however much I feel I need in the White sugar and then add to that about 1 tablespoon at a time of molasses until I feel it is dark enough for what I am using it for. (example: 4 cups of white sugar + 3 tablespoons of molasses = medium dark brown sugar). I don't even buy brown sugar anymore as it saves me a little extra money to make my own. I have learned to make a lot of my own seasoning mixes, powdered herbs, and things like brown sugar over the years and it really does save money which I can use for other things. I love apple butter and I thank you for sharing your video. I was searching to double-check to make sure I had my spices right before making my 2 large roaster batches. I always seem to forget the salt and allspice, but I have also used pumpkin spice in the past when I am short on some of the other spices. Also, thank you for reminding me that I don't have to peel all these apples (3 bushels+) it is really going to save me a lot of time. You may want to remind your viewers though that if they leave the skins on, make sure they wash their apples really well and to make sure they clean out all the blemishes and bug bites as well as wormholes. I am subscribing to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your videos, both past and future. Thanks so much for sharing... Many Blessings to you always. ~SuzyJC-in-Pataskala-Ohio/USA_10.26.2022~

I've done that many times before! I do tend to keep brown sugar on hand because I use so much and it's cheap from Sam's Club. If I run out, I always do the molasses and white sugar trick. Thank you for watching and for sharing your tip!

I've heard about it being kind of a get-together thing to do in some places! Since you live in apple country, I guess that makes sense that y'all do it that way! This was my first time making it, but it turned out really well and I will definitely do it again, and I won't change the recipe because it was a hit! 😋

I like how you leave the skins on! It turns out great also. The stick bllender is if you don't want chucks and makes everything go so much faster!

I love leaving skins on whenever I can. I always hate throwing the skins away on potatoes when I can, but I know that's what the guidelines tell us to do and as I have said many times, I'm definitely not a rebel canner! I was new to a stick blender when I made this video, but I really am glad to have it.

I never thought of using a steamer. I always put it into a deep boiling pot.

I never thought of the steamer either until I saw that it was a thing! Now I love using it for any waterbath canning recipes.

I can't wait to hear how it turns out! Remember, don't hesitate to move it to the stove near the end to thicken it up. That slow cooker can be REALLY slow sometimes. Especially opening it and closing it.

I leave the lid off the crockpot and it cooks in 8 hrs I stir it often.
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge 2 года назад
I will have to try that, leaving the lid off, next time. I've always worried that the heat wouldn't get up high enough if the lid was off, but if you've tried it and been successful with it, it sounds like something I would like to try! Thank you for the suggestion!

When you add sugar along the way, do you just add white sugar or do you do a combo? Thanks

I used 2 cups of white sugar and 2 cups of brown sugar. You can use all white sugar, but I wouldn’t use all brown sugar.

I'm not sure how many apples it was, but I have the recipe in the video description. I used about 6 lbs of apples.

Is this safe to can since there is no lemon juice or apple cider vinegar in it?
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge Год назад
Apples are naturally acidic so you can safely waterbath can apple butter since it’s only other ingredient would be sugar and spices. No need to add lemon juice or any other acid.

Can you use Splenda for the sugar?
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge Год назад
Unfortunately I don’t know anything about that. You might want to look up apple butter recipe with Splenda. I think the sugar might play a role in helping this become the right consistency.

I used date sugar... but you can use coconut sugar too.... but only use 1 cup of each.... she is using too much sugar.... apples are already sweet.

Way too much sugar for a fugi apple😯. I use a freshly picked King apple with a slight tartness and I only use 1 cup brown sugar and 1 cup date sugar to 7 lbs apples in the crock with cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.... cook down for up to 24 hours.... then add half cup real maple syrup and then can. Delish😋😋😋🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎
@OldTimeKnowledge

Huh, never even heard of date sugar before. Is it just with the regular sugars in the grocery store? All I can say is my family loved this apple butter and they devoured it! Thanks for your suggestions though! 😃
