Great lessens this morning! There are so many young people who have never been involved in gardening and harvesting. Fresh garden vegies are the best of the best!
I’ve been harvesting and canning vegetables from my garden for 3 years now. I’m 39 now and if I would’ve been taught this when I was young I think I would’ve started years ago 😅 yesterday I made pickles in jars 🫙. I enjoy being outside cleaning, picking flowers, watering my plants and garden etc. thank for sharing this video granny.
My grandparents' front porch was screened and there were six rocking chairs lined up on it. We'd sit out there with a big enamel pan full of beans in our laps, shelling, snapping, rocking, talking and laughing. I remember sore thumbs and good times 😊
I remember sitting on the front porch, working lima beans or shucking corn. We now have a small plot in a sharing garden. We grow tomatoes, green beans, garlic, lettuce, sometimes kale, radishes, banana peppers and carrots. We also grow zinnias, marigolds, basil, and borage. It's amazing how much food you can get on an 8' x 10' patch of earth.
Good morning! I remember doing the gardening while I was growing up. I love all of the fresh vegetables. We utilized everything we could grow. My parents were pastors with five children and we always had a garden and ate a lot of fried chicken. We called it the gospel bird. So, with the gospel bird and the garden, the Lord, Mom, and Dad kept our gang fed. We were blessed and still are! Have a wonderful day! Enjoy your blessings! 😇❤️🙏
My kids love shelling beans and shucking corn because they think it's like these new "surprise" toys, where you unwrap some mystery items. I try to grow different varieties and have them guess the color. It's perfect for their little hands
Hello granny.nice seeing you in the kitchen. Vegetables from the garden are the best. My family enjoyed fresh vegetables and fruits this Independence Day. Hope you will soon feel better.
I grew up having to help my mom with canning every summer, and she'd always say, "Think how good this will taste in the middle of winter." That argument never made me feel like I was having more fun. 😂 My dad was a great gardener--the strangest thing he did was dig a big hole and bury a rusty old car fender in it, and then he planted a peach tree on top of it. You start to wonder about adults when they do things like that, but he said peach trees thrive on iron, and for as long as that peach tree lived, it would have a steady source of it. I don't know if that's true or not, but we always had peaches and we lived in the desert in New Mexico.
One of my all time favorites :) Great way to fill your family's belly cheap. I can no longer have starchy veggies like potatoes so I just cook the beans with some bacon.
We have a thousand percent humidity. Water is rolling down the front door. Man oh man the other day, outside of my Orthopedic place they had a veggie market set up. I had boiled peanuts for lunch! What a treat. We still have fresh tomatoes from that. I forked out two 20's like it wasn't nothing because any time I can eat that fresh it's worth it to me. Our cheaper garden stuff is way across town from me now. I got me some white acre peas and froze them. I can't wait to fix them. White acre peas are one of my favorite foods. I use turmeric pills for my aches and pains. It's a food/spice and does not hurt my stomach ( a rare thing indeed lol ) and it's cheap and it sure helps me! Bless.
Hi! A office chair on wheels is great for working in the kitchen, you can move around without having to get up.padded seat too.mine has arms which I need for leverage.
Isn’t that the truth? We hated doing those things as kids, helping with garden produce and getting ready for canning, but we’d give anything to go back in time for a bit and do it all once again.
Amazon sells folding stools at a fairly reasonable price. We use the when needed and fold them up when not in use. We have planted a garden in Alabama, but it has been so hot and dry, I don't know if we will get very much.
I was the bean snapper every summer 😂 I’ve always had a garden because I just love being outdoors and gathering food for our family. We currently work out of state but have herbs and tomato, peppers plants in pots. I plan to get back to a full garden after we’re done here in Texas!
Thank you Miss Granny for showing about the green beans etc. You mentioned you were going fry some squash can you please make a video. If you already have one I’ll search for it. Have a blessed day 😊
We had a bumper crop of beans last year that I canned, so not planted this year. Good crop of tomatoes that I have made into catsup and juice. Stewed tomatoes next (tomatoes, peppers, onions and celery.) A bit of sweet corn.
How about making some hoecakes for supper? Nothing but hot water mixed into cornmeal and fried in some butter and oil in an iron skillet Oh my goodness, it's as good as baked cornbread. If you have it, mix a little molasses in your batter and you'll have such a tasty hoecake. Slather ir with butter. Diane in NC
Deep South Homestead is a wealth of knowledge about gardening and the Saturday night live they answer a lot of gardening questions. I hated shucking and silking corn because I always got in trouble because I couldn't get all the silks off.
Yes I just picked a hand full of green beans. I guess I will have too plant another set too get enough too can up and have 5 cabbage lefted out 11 and 13 volunteer tomatoes ,I'm thinking they are all cherry tomatoes. And 6 butternut squash a growing. But this weather has been so odd getting heat in June were its usually July. Another growing curve.
Green beans are wonderful. I love them cooked with bacon grease and bits of bacon. Just plain is great also with lots of butter, salt and pepper on. I have watched some on You Tube grow string beans or green beans and it is like they do not know what they are doing. They put in the seeds too close together and do not give anything for them to climb on so when the bean vines start to attach to another kind of plant they complain and act like it is the green beans fault. If you try and give them tips they act so offended. So it is not easy to teach the younger generations how to garden or do anything else.
Love Okra, My mom used to stew with garlic , tomato, and onions. I loved pickled okra too ... Throw some vinegar on drained Okra to get the slim off .. rinse and cook !
My grandmother dried leather britches a lot when I was a little girl. As I recall, they turn very dark when cooked. I like them, but not as much as fresh green beans. Thanks for the memories. Diane in NC
