I can't grow leeks very well. So I buy them from the store. I do dehydrate them as well. Great video!

There is an easy trick for cleaning leeks. Holding the leek straight up, with the V formed by the leaves facing you. Insert a sharp knife in the V so your knife goes all the way through the leek. Then with an upward motion, slice through the green leaves to their top. This causes the green leaves to spread very easily. Hold the leek under running water, rubbing all the grit away.

@@TheHomesteadingHousewife Let me know anytime if my instructions were not clear enough. I love leeks! I often eat them while still warm (cold is ok too) after putting a homemade vinaigrette on them. I didn't know you could regrow them. But I hesitate since that means sacrificing the most tender part.

@@evangelineadams4885 I thought the instructions were very clear! And I only cut about an inch up from the roots so tons of tender leek was left. And o my, as soon as you said vinaigrette my mind went to a warm bacon vinaigrette over some leeks! yummm!

Ummm nice So i planted my onion roots without sprouting in water ..thought they would take off ...they haven't yet, 2 weeks ago, still cool outside should i put them in water kind of start all over?

@TheHomesteadingHousewife 2 года назад
Well if the soil was watered enough when you planted them then I'd think they would still do fine. You could always carefully pluck one and see if it's rooted any. Then maybe soak. But I've never done that so idk how well removing from soil and putting back would work.

I’m new to leeks and not sure how I would use the dried tops? What type of things do you plan on using them for. All I’ve ever heard of is leek and potato soup.

I plan to use them as seasoning. I'll powder them and sprinkle in soups, casseroles and scrambled eggs for a leek flavor. anything you would want a leek flavor added. some people eat the leek tops, but i just find they are too tough for me. Leeks in general can be put into all kinds of soups, you can throw them in quiche, or make some delicious side dishes with them. They are pretty versatile. To me they have an oniony/garlic flavor.
