My father was 17 years old when LBJ gave this speech, less than 18 months later my dad drops out of high school and enlists in the US Army and goes to war with the 101st Airborne Division to Vietnam in ‘67.

This is used very dramatically in the film We Were Soldiers. "I have today ordered to Vietnam the air mobile division." Gives me chills. (Too bad about the audio dropout.)

What LBJ was really saying: We are in Vietnam because I came to this office with a gun to my head to stay there and expand the war,me and Lady Bird are going to make a shitload of money with our investments in GE and Bell Helicopter,and our friends Brown and Root will get $1 billion to dredge Cam Rahn Bay.WOO-HOO!

Why would there be a big conspiracy by the military leadership to get us in a war and then go along with fighting it in such an inept way that it drags on for years? You don’t need a war to profit on military contracts.

@@prudenttable3442 Vietnam was started as a civil dispute. This fool made it a war against each other out there. Oh by the way my daddy was in Vietnam and my uncle and other uncle never came back home.we miss my uncle that never came back to see all his nieces and nephews and the lady that loved him. So if you don't know .please stop spreading false information. Lbj lies and said his Male projector was the reason.

In the beginning Vietnam did not want to be Communist. They actually reached out to the US because HCM actually admire the US system and aspire to be like them. The US brushed VN off wanting to not support or intervene hence why VN turned to nations who could support them(China, USSR, etc). Maybe if the US would've just support them in the beginning Vietnam wouldn't have had to turn to the Communist nation for ally and support. The US only intervene when it was too late and when it seemed like Communism was spreading.
@chickychickerson7219
@chickychickerson7219 8 лет назад
you are right about VN not turning communist if US would have helped them, it happened because France told the US that the french would turn communist if they didn't regain their empire; therefore the US completely brushed off VN despite their good post WWII relations. The US decided to strategically support france instead of vietnam, but it didn't work for anyone anyway.
@williamd7767
@williamd7767 7 лет назад
Alena Lin so very true the US turned their backs on HCM and VN after the second world war and the French colonise the country and HCM started the Vietnam war of independence.
@praetor9822

Well, once you go red, your red 'till your dead. In other words, when they went communist, they were real communists, and all that Vietnamese nationalism went out the window. They did not liberate their country, they enslaved hundreds of thousands of people.

That Ho Chi Minh wasn't always a communist is a myth. He devoted his life to international communist revolution. Any and all people who have studied his life and who knew him personally can tell you that. That Ho admired some of the rhetoric of our own American revolution is a merely footnote.
@sixshot4

HCM never wanted to be like the American system. He praised he American independence and its bill of rights and that all men are created equal. He wasn’t a capitalist nor a supporter of limited constitutional government. Stop spewing lies

What a strange television production...if you ever see the still photos from this press conference, the networks installed a giant klieg light on top of a television camera and placed it just in front of the President's podium. The effect is an uncomfortable close-up coupled with LBJ's fake-pious speech delivery that was nothing like his real personality.

"we will not surrender" yeah what did he do in 1968? He had a ceasefire and started talks with the North Vietnamese. And this undermined the soldiers fighting in the Jungles of the South in my opinion. Mr LBJ was a War monger unfortunately for the US especially their Army.

Those talks came right after a report by Walter Cronkite. (the clip is on youtube). Johnson knew after he lost Cronkite he lost a lot of support of the population.

Why did the US get into Vietnam? Simple. The War Industry wanted it badly and a trillion dollars were at stake, from sophisticated weaponry down to body bags. Plus, killing lots of people was loads of fun, and wars give politicians and corporate leaders lots of power, which feeds their fragile egos. Getting deeply involved in Vietnam for a decade was so important to the CIA, the Military, and the War Industry, that they recognized they'd have to take JFK out permanently to make it happen, especially since he was onboard with the program. Of course, the claim that the War had something to do with "fighting communism" was nonsense. Just as soon as they wound up the Vietnam War, the US Military-Industrial Complex went to work 100% to make Communist China an Economic Powerhouse. They loved the Communists and continue to love them.

Nixon didn't "drag it out", the N. Vietnamese did. President Nixon invaded Cambodia when the communists were found to have been keeping supplies and men there. He also initiated Operation Linebacker and Linebacker II where he bombed the shit out of N. Vietnam and brought their happy asses back to the bargaining table. Someone had to fix Johnson's fuckups; he did!

I suggest some of you talk to some older Vietnamese who live in the USA. Many came here before. AND AFTER, the fall of South Vietnam. They will tell you how South Vietnam could have been like South Korea, Free and Economically wealthy. You will even find those from the North actually believe today, Vietnam would have been a much better then the Communists. All this nonsense about War Profits driving the war is all nonsense. The Vietnam war was no different from the Korean war and you can see the people today who are far better off when you see who won the conflict. Its there and many liberals refuse to deal with the stark difference between Vietnam and Korea.
