This was an incredible moment in history, an American president being given a personal tour by the General Secretary of the Communist Party. One can only imagine what the world might look like if Gorbachev hadn't been forced out in the coup, and he had been able to reform the Soviet Union, and turn it into something like a Western European Social-Democracy. If the Soviet Union, and the US had been able to become allies despite their ideological differences the world would probably be a much more peaceful, and prosperous place. A Russian-American alliance is a dream of mine, together our nations would be the undisputed world powers, if we could form a mutually beneficial trade agreement we could more or less drive China out of the market, and in doing so grow our own manufacturing sectors, thus making our average citizens much, much more wealthy, and help India grow without under cutting us the way the Chinese have. I would love to live in that world, American built Cadillacs transporting Russian leaders, and Russian built Ladas providing poorer Americans cheaper, reliable transportation. A joint Russian-American Imternational Space Agency putting men on mars as representatives of humanity rather than one nation or another. It really could have been the so called "end of history."

I had a Russian penpal and they were intelligent family people. Let's not forget the 30 years we have all been trading and coexisting at the international space station. Thankyou Russia for liberating the world from hitler. And thankyou America for risking diplomacy and helping us all to live a better life.

Well it's a double edged sword, it is because then the Soviets came in our countries in Eastern Europe and destroyed everything that was good and impoverished our nations. We had a democracy, capitalist system before they rammed in and did a bunch of damage, shot people to death, put them in prison, liquidated farms for the best crops, meat. A Westerner can't imagine how evil and wicked communism is. It dudn't work. Plus it makes people lazy. The Americans didn't give a rats arse to come and liberate our nations from the Russians. The Russians were poor too and poorly managed.

indeed the Russians burned down their own city, the reason: to cause attrition for Napoleons army, and rather have it fall then in the hands of the french, Napoleon expected a Peace treaty after the fall of Moscow, but the Russians would have none of it, knowing that Napoleon had to fall back to Smolensk due the lack of supplies , they had a plan all along
