Presidential historian Allan Lichtman discusses the current state of the Republican Party following the 2022 midterm elections and where the GOP could be headed next. #CNN #News
Election denial gets you nowhere. It's basically like telling the average voter they don't matter -- well they do matter, and they have made that message resoundingly abundantly clear.
No, they don't matter we don't live in a democracy. It's all an illusion. You need to read more books instead of sitting on the internet all day, digesting MSM propaganda.
My grandfather's and grandmother's and all their friends all voted proxy from the cemetery. When they found out they had voted Demorat, they said they wanted their votes back. They had been die hard Republicans all their lives. Scandalous!
@Mike Rew That is incorrect. If Warnock wins the runoff, it will give Democrats a 51-49 advantage, which does not cancel out Manchin and Sinema’s votes. If they decide to vote with the GOP, Democrats only have 49 votes. This is still Manchin and Sinema’s Senate.
Yes by all means the state that elected MTG twice and almost Herschel Walker is obviously populated by rational intelligent voters who care about the country👍👍
I took a couple of Lichtman's classes at AU in 2005-06. So cool to see him pop up here and get his take. Great classroom instructor and a solid historian for sure.
Professor is so good. Desantis is not God. Republicans are having a giant cancer in their head. He alone can't solve the serious issue. Just think of how many different types of healthcare professionals working together to treat a cancer patient in order to bring him to remission. It is the same thing here. Even though Desantis has become more popular, it does not mean the can do it all.
Very biased. There's a reason why CNN likes and brought him on. Referring to republicans as having "extreme views" when they're more liberal than ever before. I wonder if he's as partisan when describing the other side who've gone to a historical far left point when it comes to their views on culture and morals, very unlikely. This is why people don't trust "experts" anymore.
This guy is 100% on and I’m so glad he kept talking so many of these commentators ask stupid questions and keep repeating themselves the guy just wants to tell you exactly!!!! 👍👍
She said he hadn't been there for awhile. He , appropriately, said something snarky about finally being invited back. Suddenly it's ok to criticize Republicans again!
She looked like she’d shit her pants when he said the crazies are the mainstream now. Interesting that even CNN are pretending the Republicans are still “normal”
If and when the GOP REALLY gets "serious" about saving itself, then and only then will it turn to Liz Cheney. As a Democrat, I disagree with Liz about almost any policy question you can name, but she is an AUTHENTIC patriot whom I would totally trust to uphold her oath of office, and in this age of seditious traitors only out for themselves, that makes her golden. Liz has the crossover appeal that it actually takes to win the presidency.
@@tylerkochman1007 Dems will not vote for her, some independents will. The MAGA crowd will not, but maybe enough of the Reps who despise trumpism. It may work for her, also depending on who is the Dem candidate...
@@tylerkochman1007 I think what he means is that, IF the Republicans finally realize how important democracy and integrity is, the real Republicans might vote for her. Those who agree with the Conservative policies of which we don't, I mean. I don't think that he meant wanting a Democrat voting for her. But, after the trumplican MAGA sh#t show of absolute insanity, I could at least respect and trust Liz Cheney's leadership of the Republican Party. I doubt that she'd put up with MAGA nuts, like MTG etc. And, if it came down to a Republican Presidency win, I'd jump for joy for her over DeSantis. He's anti-democracy policies scare the crap out of me. I'd never hope for a Republican win but I can, at least, see Liz Cheney willing to work on bipartisanship.
I personally don't like Trump and won't vote for him again, but I despise a lot of the left's ideals. If Liz was running as VP with a great running mate I'd consider voting for them. I favor Tulsi, Rand and DeSantis but anyone other than them running I don't see myself voting for in the next election. Just shit vs shit now a days and it's pathetic this is what we have to work with.
I have a few Republican-voting friends both here in NZ and in the US, and it has affected our friendship. It's really hard to know what to do. They seem so angry and deluded, and it seems to have infected all parts of their lives.
I hear you. It is REALLY hard to engage with them. And it has nothing to do with "politics." It becomes who they are. How they treat people. Their lack of empathy and lack of ability to distinguish fact from fiction using basic logic.
@@RegisterRedVoteBlue One thing I thought about recently is the language that (some) Americans use around political affiliation. "I'm a Democrat" or "I'm a Republican." Not "I voted for party x this time." See the subtle difference? It becomes part of someone's identity rather than something they did at a particular point in time.
Trump could care less about the GOP. He needs to feed his ego. He has no control so he will announce and play out the Republicans last act. They deserve each other.
That's right, Trump will happily destroy the GQP out of spite if they don't back him. Start another party, tell his voters to stay home, Trump cares about nothing an no one but himself.
He doesn't want to run? All his 'donations' will need to be accounted for? He won't want to stop the flow of the easiest money he ever got???! EVEN NOW..he started a fundraiser for Walker and in the fine print is basically says 90% is Trump's to do with whatever he wants! The grifter will grift until his last breath. He will only run to stave off law suits as he thinks it will help him. He really does not want to run as he knows it will be ANOTHER loss. He has lost the popular vote twice and more people are anti Trump now than ever before.
The sad truth is that the GOP has become morally bankrupt. I left the party in 2016 when I realized the path it was on. Maybe they will get the message in 2024 when they lose again.
For your sake and the sake of all other sane conservatives, I hope you're right. HOWEVER, the only way out of this I see is the eventual splitting of the party. Hopefully one of the two new parties that come out of that split will stand up for the values of Reagan's Republican party and we can get back to the marketplace of ideas.
I used to vote Republican when I served in the military. It was a very different conservative back then. Now I'm Democrat. It's everyone's choice to vote in the best interest of the country. Disregarding the party completely is OK sometimes.
The sooner we move forward from this midterm and realize it’s not about Republican or Democrat at this point it’s about moving us as a country forward. We went through so many extremes and tests, to where we now have the opportunity to rebuild collectively. Without the cults. Leave them behind.
Secure border, energy independence, independence from a domineering federal government role in people’s lives, a good example is the free state of Florida during the pandemic verses the chaotic and inconsistent lockdown as in California and New York. There.
Yeah but in a way Trump exposed to the world exactly what the GOP was about. More people open their eyes to see what the GOP was about. The GOP is going down at flames and I don't think anybody sad about it I think it's time to GOP ends in this country who needs a party who's only for the rich people and for themselves who have literally no policies.
@@ac61900 what’s wrong with rich people? You think if everyone was poor, except for government officials of course, things would be better? That’s exactly what’s wrong with central and South America, no one works, they have nothing, they no longer do anything.
A Russian was driving on a freeway heading into Moscow when he joined a huge traffic jam. He opened his window to ask a police officer what was holding up the traffic? The officer replied "Putin is standing in the road, threatening to douse himself in petrol and light himself up unless he gets donations for his war in Ukraine". The driver says, "how much are people donating"? To which the police officer replies "about a gallon".
Nobody's discussing how DeSantis's national endorsements lost also; O'Dea, Schmidt, Masters, Mastriano. And Kari Lake is about to lose. And if DeSantis endorses Walker that's likely a loss also. (Actually Walker is a loss even if he wins)
People keep propping up Ron DeSantis as if he's actually faced anyone of note. I LIVE here in Florida and I can tell you that Democrats didn't even put up an effort.
In my opinion, the only way to "save" the GOP would be for Liz Cheney to resurrect it with "true" Republicans, leaving the others to fend for themselves.
I agree the Republican party is loosing because of abortion rights and election denial. Also they are talking about sunsetting social security and Medicare.
The full quote (if anyone is interested, or just wants to quibble): “They (Democrats) had things in there (that bill), levels of voting, that if you agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”
@@gregbors8364 basically without gerrymandering and voter suppression we’ll never win is what he said. Once we get rid of gerrymandering the GOP will be begging for us to ditch plurality for ranked voting so they can stay relevant, and as a bonus America will finally be able to escape this 2 party dystopia we’re in.
@@liftedmarco4976 I think he was acknowledging that the GOP in its current form doesn’t come close to representing the interests of the majority of the American electorate, and will not at any time in the near future. In order to do that, the Republicans would need to do some soul-searching and a major overhaul. But you’re right too
well apart from maybe Elon Musk which is almost 100% of the reason why he's even recognized which basically tells me, that Ron DeSantis is an average republican, do anything and everything, to benefit the rich and dismiss the poor.
Exactly he's nothing but a bully in not just the GOP, but the entire state of Florida. Let's look at the facts shall we: 1. He Banned a woman's right for abortion 2. He Striped Disney World of it's self government 3. He Banned discussion of gender identity and sexuality orientation in classrooms K-3rd grade Just to name a few. 😡
Well explained by Mr. historian, I wonder if Americans are ready to admit what it is they want the Republican party to stand for, if this is it, they might as well admit that they stand for Fascism.
We are done with the republican presidents for a while. It doesn't mean forever, of course! It's just for now and very possibly for 2024. If Reps indeed want a comeback, they must bring back good, prop-people policies, which they don't have whatsoever(!), and decent, sensible, appealing candidates, which they actually do have(sic!), but they are not even willing to nominate them, lol!
@@xpsxps1339 Trump and Biden are old. Can't try for 2028 election or even win 2024. New people will run and get elected. And politics will shift through them.
The GOP is poised to become irrelevant politically. Polls show a widespread and deepening divide between the GOP and what most people feel about women's rights, gun control. and voter rights, These three weighty issues are front and center in the minds of most americans. The GOP is ignoring this growing chasm at its peril.
GQP is hardly a party to take seriously anymore. There’s no real substance, just fear mongering and gaslighting about their political opponents in hopes of scaring people into voting Republican. The vision for the future and legislation providing the roadmap to get there just doesn’t exist in the 2022 GQP.
Allan Lichtman can always be relied on to give the most intelligent, and well- rounded breakdown of an election, with at least a few points not covered by any other analysts.
The fact that his interviewer sometimes didn't always seem to agree with or understand him indicated to me that his analysis was informed and intelligent--definitely a well-reasoned perspective.
Please let Trump ruin another election for the GOP! And oh, let's give Cyberninjas many recounts, like in Arizona they are able to find more votes for Democrats 👍.
Georgia, please vote again and get everyone and your mamas to take it home for Warnock in December. It's still vital that he wins for many reasons. This isn't over yet.
Exactly, hilarious that Republicans are still so out of touch that they think the much greater majority of Americans are impressed much less want anything to do with DeSantis or Florida's shitty policies.
As a European there are many things I don't understand about democracy in the USA, and one of them is the case of Manchin and Sinema. Here, if someone acted like them, they would automatically be dismissed from their political party and would not be able to participate in the following elections on behalf of it. Why doesn't the Democratic Party stop them?
@@jhughes5844 I'm sorry, but: -I'm not talking about voluntarily leaving the political group, but about being expelled. -As a typical republican you have no idea what communism is or progressivism. For you any social advance is communist. -As a typical republican you have a false idea about the role that the USA had in WWII, you think that the victory over the Nazis is only attributable to America. European countries also fought (and took the brunt of it), and it was Russia that finally took Berlin (after losing 18 million lives). The USA was a very important ally, with an undeniable role, but it entered the conflict because Germany had declared war on it. If the Nazis won in Europe then they would have gone to American territory. Your country was not devastated; ours yes.
@@jhughes5844 If what you tell me is true, it seems incredible to me that you can compare the communism of the Soviet or that of Korea with the democrats in the USA. Perhaps the perspective of a soldier is not the most appropriate to assess the enemy's society. For starters, if you ask any European they will tell you that we don't even consider the Democratic Party to be left-wing, but rather center-right. So are we Europeans also suspected of being communists? It's hard to find an American Republican who really knows what communism or socialism is, let alone the application of these ideas in different parts of the world. Do you think that Latin American socialism is anything like European socialism? If you think so, you are completely wrong.
@@jhughes5844 The cause of most of the suffering in your country is the Republican Party, especially since it was infected by Trump. That is the real evil.
Sadly I do see the demise of the GQP, not really sadly, but I see the GQP ripping itself apart from the inside out... Lindsey Graham was right though in 2015 " if we elect donald trump we will get what we deserve " and boy was he right... the GQP is getting what they deserve
Democrats need to stop spending and get rid of crime. Republicans have the majority of governors and House seats, and both of those are, imo, a reflection of the Democratic state crime. Even NY flipped three House seats to red, and CA’s loss of population meant Democrats lost a House seat. If you think that’s good news, then I have some inflation that’s transitory and no recession for you.
Allan Lichtman is incredibly articulate, to the point where I am embarrassed of my own lack of articulation! His diction is superb, and he chooses the right words at the right time. This all releases his broad intellect and historical knowledge in a way that is both entertaining and informative.
I'm so ashamed of my state of Texas for re-electing Abbott again. I feel like the state of Texas is stuck in a washing machine just going round and around and washing the same old dirt over and over again. We have got to do better.

Not all quotes that are commonly used are realistic and this is one of them. And much less in a democracy like the American one, in which a minority can rule over a majority. In the last 20 years, the Republican Party has only won the popular vote once, and yet it has governed 12 of those 20 years. America clearly does not deserve to have rulers who have not obtained a sufficient social majority.
Great analysis - one of the best I've heard this season. It's amazing how the GOP won't take the veil off their eyes. And I applaud the American public for rebuking them because they have treated the American public as though they were idiots. Happy to see that they never were.
I agree that Deathsantis and trump are twin brothers. They're both evil, racist, misogynistic and dangerous men. The difference is Deathsantis is a Yale educated lawyer and trump is horribly ignorant. Deathsantis will definitely run for president and would have the capability to change our country and not for the better. He's trump on steroids. 😡
Yes but he berates school children for wearing masks on live tv, he doesn't support better pay for teachers, he pulls taxpayer funds to pull a stunt like flying those poor LEGAL immigrants to Massachusetts, and there are over 80 thousand DEAD Floridians who don't agree with how he handled COVID. Oh, and he's a shitty dresser. Everyone knows WHITE FOOTWEAR is out after Labor Day!
Obama is right when he said that Ronald Reagan would not win a nomination if he runs in the current Republican primary. His immigration policy in the 1980s debate with Bush is actually quite similar to Bernie and AOCs how times have changed. Professor Lichtman is so right by saying that Ron DeSantis will not be the savior the Republicans had hope for.
Desantis is just a pretty dressed up package of a different view of trump! He is better educated, military associated, yes a very caring devoted husband and father! Just beware, he is just as dangerous, maybe even more than trump!
Barely even a different personality. He basically copied Trump's mannerisms. Plays well in Florida, but the rest of us see he's just a carbon copy of Trump.

Warnock should be ashamed that the race has to go to a Runoff. At some point the Democrats have got to develop their testes and FIGHT! I am a peaceful person too but even peaceful people can bring some pain if required. My favorite Marine of all-time was Major General Smedley Darrington Butler. He was awarded The Congressional Medal of Honor ( The highest military award) not once but twice. He also wrote one the greatest books titled: " War is a Racket". Yes, it is Anti-War Corruption but not Anti- Military. The DNC just doesn't have FIGHTERS. When Senator Al Frankin resigned over some childish pictures he took, that reflects how weak the party is. How many Republicans resigned over their January 6th involvement?
I can’t believe that the race got that close with both the House, Senate and Warnock and Walker, just Unbelievable! My God, what’s wrong with our American people!
The Original Sin of these United States of America. " Racist". We keep kicking it down the road and it only comes back worse. What happened on January 6th was a " White Surpremacy Terrorist " attack on our political institution. Most inbthe Media won't even call it what it was. Even though logic agrees with you, if you think what a landslide it _could_ have been for Republicans, due to historical precedent, then a considerable number of Americans have helped bring an amazing result. Democrats now need to build on that by listening to voters and what they want. Even better if they manage to retain the House.

Allan Lichtman has presented the best analysis of the current state of the GOP that I have heard from any commentator of later. I concur with the many insightful points that he has made. While many on cable news are fawning over RD, he is simply another version of the former guy engaging in political stunts, stoking culture wars and creating division.
DeSantis is strong in the GOP because he defeated a pitifully weak candidate which never nobody heard of, plus, he scores high among a very specific demographic, the elderly and white suburban women. Democrats are gonna tear him to pieces in 2024 at National level
@@kiak2971 Lol. Florida is now the most expensive place to live in America. Insurance companies are pulling out because of climate change (which DeSantis denies even exists). He cut funding to social services who are currently struggling to cope with an upsurge in orphans due to COVID. Tell me again how DeSantis is pro-people
The reasonable individuals within the GOP kept quiet out of fear and deferred to the loud unreasonable individuals, and this is what you get when good people do nothing about the bad actors
Agreed. Let them burn themselves to the ground. Between what they have revealed about themselves and changing demographics they are done. A job well done. Let something healthy grow from the ashes or let’s see a third party
Well, a third party is likely what will grow from the ashes. The Republicans themselves were a splinter from the Whig party of old. I can see the GOP splintering off again.
Karl Rove and Dick Cheney deserve just as much blame as anyone for the state of the GOP today. They distanced themselves early on when they saw it heading South.
This really could not have gone better. I really hope that this leads to the GOP becoming politically irrelevant so that the debate could actually be between progressive leftists and moderate liberals.
I mean you could see a moment similar to the whigs where Democrats become a big tent while the Nationalists and Traditional conservatives go through an internal civil war. The GOP if they were smart would kick the Christian Nationalists from their party forcing them to go 3rd party. It would kill the Nationalist movement.

I remember when Jeb Bush the Florida Governor was the frontrunner in 2016. I remember when Marco Rubio the FL Senator was gonna be the front runner. All this FL obsession is nonsense.
Indeed. The Democrats haven't really put much effort into Florida since 2012 or so, and until they start doing that, Florida isn't a good barometer of national potential.
It's been turning more solid red since before Desantis. It's really the same expected outcome as any other solid red state, not the meaningful win that the panicked right wants to think. Almost anyone w an R next to their name would have won bigly in FL.
Desantis won the Puerto Rican vote and flipped Miami dade… something’s going on here that this guy cannot comprehend. Many independents are willing to vote for Desantis over trump simply based on personality and effectiveness
This historian is drawing the wrong conclusions from last Tuesday, and he's also indulging in a narrative that Republicans are extreme while Democrats are reasonable. I do not find unlimited illegal immigration, artificially inflated gas prices, late term abortion, and defunding the police reasonable or moderate at all. I think the midterms were a wash for republicans because of abortion, student loans, and January 6th. Also, it is worth noting that Republicans won races for governor in Georgia, New Hampshire, and Nevada, which means that despite the fact that Republicans lost two of those Senate races and has one in a runoff, those states are still competitive. With better candidates and proper funding, all three of those races could have been won by Republicans last Tuesday night, and Republicans would already have a majority of 52 seats in the Senate.
Excellent point about Republicans having abandoned everything they used to stand for. Now they stand for nothing at all. I also agree about DeSantis. He’s just like Trump. Someone like Larry Hogan would be a step in the right direction for them.
The Republican party is going the way of the Federalists of late 18th and early 19th centuries. And I often tell Republicans not to underestimate "sleepy Joe" Biden. He could be their doom.
