Check out this unique bottom bracket from an early 90's Gary Fisher Paragon. Thanks to Reddit and BikeForums.net and McMaster-Carr for helping me figure out how to service this bad boy. The bike feels great now!

You fracking beat me too this video. Absolutely top notch. I own a Fisher Ti Prometheus and have done this repair for another customer. I had been meaning to post an instructional video. You beat me.

You should still make your video. It's hard to find info on these bbs and evolution headsets. People like different points of view as well.

Just bought an old Fisher HK-II & there is play in the bottom bracket. Watched many videos on the wide variety of BBs until my head spun, but could not find anything with retaining spring-clips. This video has been invaluable to me. Thanks so much.

Thanks! I have a 1988 Fisher Montare XT that is starting to make noises in the BB. When I restored it a few years ago I avoided dealing with this but now I'm going to tackle it. Read about it online but you video really helped!

Thanks for posting, I’m doing a 1988 Montare. My spindle is more burly, and has a sleeve and two rings with allen bolts to secure them. Now to find a socket that works!

Thank you, Forrest! Your Paragon looks awesome! I have a Fisher 91 Procaliber that I bought new and I've been looking all over for some insight into the bottom bracket. This was a great help! Now if I could find the original fork or a replacement...
@forrestblank
@forrestblank 3 года назад
You're welcome! The fork/headset/stem on these bikes are the other hidden surprise! The parts are rare and do occasionally show up on eBay. Another option might be (please consult a professional before trying this!) this adapter from Problem Solvers which allows you to use a 1 1/8" diameter fork/stem/headset. www.jensonusa.com/Problem-Solvers-Headtube-Reducer-1-14-to-1-18

I've got a Gary Fisher Sphinx from 91/92? The axle was broken down. Now I bought an old Fisher bike from this time to obtain this part. Not easy to find worldwide 😅

Wow, that's one way to get hard to find parts!

That is a wonderful demonstration about the almost-impossible-to-find bottom bracket. I have the same bottom bracket that I am working on. I can stop the little play. Maybe retaining clips are bent or something else.. Do you know where to find those clips?
@forrestblank
@forrestblank 3 года назад
The clips are called Snap Rings though I'm not sure of the size. If yours are bent, it should be visible if you take them out and lay them on a flat surface. You definitely need the right tool, Snap Ring Pliers, to take them out and re-install them. If you haven't replaced the bearings yet, I would do that first as bearings wear out, especially on these older bikes. Bearings: www.mcmaster.com/5972K84/ Snap Rings: www.mcmaster.com/snap-rings

You also need to use some bearing retention sealant. Its basically Loctite, On the outer surface of the bearing. There are some good written instructions out there on the web, this gentleman is the first guy to show a video. Only fault is grease and not bearing retention sealant on the outer surface. And I only base that on a fair amount of prior research I have done online. Bearings I got locally thru a bearing supply house.
@2hiperkemanci
@2hiperkemanci 3 года назад
@@mbeatty6970 I replaced the bearings with a right plier. Used the Loctite. It works fine but there is still a little play. No matter what I did, I couldn’t stop the play. But I’m okay with that.

Hey thanks for video - my old fisher is being grumpy - took the retaining Clips off but can’t seem to whack those bearings out (wood hammer Technique)
@forrestblank
@forrestblank 2 года назад
Did you try soaking the bearings in penetrating oil? Also, I had to firmly brace the frame so it didn't move when I whacked the spindle.

Thanks for posting this! I'm not experienced with press-fit bearings in general, but do you have any concerns about the socket only pressing on the outer race and not supporting the inner race as you're tapping, and getting forced out of tolerance, especially tapping in the second bearing to go in? (hopefully that question makes sense) My first mtb is a GF Aquila and it's still going! I have been loathe to ride it too much as I haven't wanted to deal with changing the bb, but this might inspire me to ride more and change out when needed....actually after 30 years, it probably is needed lol. Thanks again for putting this video up.
@forrestblank
@forrestblank 2 года назад
In my experience, all bicycle bearing presses only push the outer race when installing so no concern.

How did you remove the bearings from the spindle once you remove the assembly? mine seem to be stuck on my spindle. I have a gary fisher procaliber
@forrestblank
@forrestblank Год назад
Probably corroded. Penetrating oil and gentle tapping. Try not to damage the spindle since replacements are hard to find.

I have the same frame you were working on and my question is , do you know of an updated bottom bracket that can be used on this frame so you can use a new style crankset. And if not would you know where I can get those bearings and I need the spindle as well because the crank arms come loose after awhile.
@forrestblank
@forrestblank Год назад
The bearings are 6003rs and can be found online. I don't think those spindles are made anymore so eBay maybe. Assuming the threads for the crank arm bolts are in decent shape have you tried a medium or strong thread locker compound?
@Alphadog265
@Alphadog265 Год назад
@@forrestblank No I haven't tried thread locker . Ithought about it though. I really was hoping to find another BB that would work to upgrade the crank.

Thanks! Just scored (FREE!) an old HK II (Hoo Koo e Koo) with the silver splatter over green. The bearing supplier was a great resource -- shipped within two days! Now who has an 1 1/4 Aheadset ? :)

How do you take it out
@forrestblank
@forrestblank 3 года назад
1. Remove the retaining clips. 2. Hit the Left end of the spindle with a hammer to push out the Right bearing. (Use something to protect the end of the spindle so you aren't hitting metal to metal, I used a small piece of wood) 3. Hit the other end of the Spindle to remove the other bearing. This guy has it briefly in his video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0pQggQ2qPx8.html
