Thanks for the great tutorial. I notice almost all mitten patterns have us cast on 1 or more stitches after putting the thumb gusset stitches on a yarn holder. Would it work just as well to do an increase in the hand portion in first round of the thumb gusset, adding the "live" stitch back that was used in the gusset?
Hi Annette - that is a great question! The two methods would likely not be equivalent. Often when a mitten pattern has you cast on the 1+ stitches after you place the thumb gusset on a yarn holder, it will have you pick up and knit the base of those cast on stitches when you move on to knit the thumb. If you added the cast on stitches at the base of the thumb increases, there would not be anything to pick up and knit into later on. I hope that helps to clarify!
