I'm so glad that Benedict pays the proper tribute to Jeremy Brett. He was a one-of-a-kind, and the BEST Sherlock Holmes we are ever likely to see in this lifetime. While Benedict does a fantastic job at playing the current Sherlock Holmes, nobody can touch Brett. He was in a class of his own. Rest in Peace, Jeremy. We love you and miss you. God bless.

It's amazing that Benedict knew Jeremy and years later plays the very same role! Jeremy is the most definitive Holmes ever, in my opinion, but I like how the BBC modernised the new series and made it relatable to todays world. Very bold!

Jeremy Brett was the epitome and played Holmes with such perfection and ease..its like poetry in motion..he is a legend..On the other hand Benedict is in a class of his own when being holmes..both are classy actors and my personal favorite would be Jeremy Brett

Love how Brett was a family friend. This is like typical British stuff, they all know each other brilliant

In my opinion, when talking about the most authentic Sherlock Holmes: Jeremy Brett (unbeatable ) > Benedict Cumberbatch (excellent) > Robert Downey Jr. (too much cliche) Deal with it or deny reality.

What about Basil or Christopher Lee

Jeremy Brett died of heart failure. His heart was larger then normal. He was also bipolar and his wife's death on top of play Sherlock Holmes really off set his bipolar disorder.

Bret is the sherlock Holmes. That being said, benedict also does a good job. Mentioning any other however, is pure heresy

Benedict is by far my favorite adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, but I loved the Robert Downey Jr. portrayal alot also.

His comment about how Brett was taken over by the character at the end is so fascinating.

Wow, it's interesting to hear Benny talk about Jeremy - I'm making my way through JB's series at the moment and I always wondered what Benny thought of it. Shouldn't have been surprised he was a family friend!

@KitsuneTheFoxgirl I completely agree, and though I do very much admire Rathbone's performances of the role I enjoy all of those you mentioned much much more.

Just like in interview part 1, there is a weird eye at the end of this part at 1:36. Anybody else have an idea of what it is?

To be honest, I didn't like Basil Rathbone's version very much... He seemed a little more like a machine with little to no flaws, in my opinion. Jeremy Brett's, Robert Downey Jr's and Benedict Cumberbatch's (and let's not forget the little known Ronald Howard and the satiric role of Peter Cook!) are some of my favorites!

@wincipoet I agree about the Robert Downey Jr. movie! It was so confusing, I couldn't follow it at all. This modern Sherlock Holmes is certainly very interesting. (:

Russians consider Livanov to be the best Holmes ever, but I'll stand by Benedict )))

I think Benedict Cumberbatch is great. Sadly, I think those productions of SHerlock were not; too much camera movement, text messages on screen, and well, I am not usually negative, but it’s deserved in this . Doyle wold not even recognize what he was watching if he were here to see this . . Of course, I am an ardent admirer of all the SHerlock Holmes stories, having read them all throughout my life ~ ~ ~. I am also a Blues fan and player so I am also critical in that area as well. There is so much garbage out there . . . . Oh well. I think they should give Benedict a better or a period piece and he’d do it wonderfully. The failure of these productions is not the fault of Benedict. His Watson is also a great actor. Just too bad it’s a bad offering . . .

Benedict is an awesome Sherlock, but I don't enjoy all the bashing that RDJ's Sherlock gets. I think it is very good, in a different way. For example, I think Benedict's Sherlock is depicted too much of a douchebag and a tad bit too much of a sociopath. Sherlock Holmes, in the books, is depicted as a charming individual, albeit with his annoying know-it-all attitude. In certain aspects, RDJ's Sherlock is a better depiction. They all have their moments, that's what I'm trying to say :)

It isn't Downey's acting It's the entire movie Maybe you should read some of the actual Conan Doyle stories

“He wants to think he’s a high-functioning sociopath,” says Moffat. “He’s not a sociopath, nor is he high-functioning. He’d really like to be a sociopath. But he’s so fucking not.” But may be you've missed this scene: - In The Hounds of Baskerville Lestrade and John have a conversation about it: L: I suppose he likes having all the same faces back together. Appeals to his…his… J: Aspergers? When you think Sherlock in BBC version is a "sociopath," you are wrong. Sherlock Holmes was never described as sociopath, also not in BBC Sherlock.

Its all a matter of opinion I suppose. I dont really mind Jr's,I dont necessarily find it to be rubbish, but only a tad silly, lol. But Brett's Holmes is very well done & of course Benedict does do the character a great deal of justice :)

Yeah, I didn't go see the RDJ movies even before I'd seen BBC's Sherlock or Brett. Now, my favorite is either Cumberbatch or Rathbone, so I can't call myself a purist, but it was clear from the movie trailers that the director had no intention of following in the spirit of Holmes. Ah, well, you can enjoy them as separate, I suppose . . .

i was introduced to sherlock holmes character by robert downey jr. so the first sherlock i ever saw was RDJ. so he is the best sherlock for me. But even benedict is also awesome as sherlock.....but i found Jaremy brett's sherlock as too much weird or too much unemotional....they way he said the dialogues was also far from normal. (i hv also read 8 of sherlock holmes novels)
