This game is stupidly underrated and is to me one of the best immersive sims I have ever played, there is just so many different options and I think it's criminal that it didn't sell as well at it need to in order to get a sequel.

@Cwavy_619 Same for me. I got about 40% into it and gave up. I am thinking about reinstalling it and resuming it. Witcher 3 was another game that left me underwhelmed and one that I should probably reinstall. I think once you get bored in a game, it's really hard to get excited about it again.

@Cwavy_619 Good to hear. I thought the enemies were boring and the graphics overly-bright which gave me a headache. No exciting cut-scenes either. Based on your recommendation though, I shall reinstall and try again and get my money's worth. Hate not finishing games!

@@DaveThompsonfairlife4all I love RPGs but I tried playing Witcher 3 twice and just could not get past the 2hr mark. I didn't like the main character, the world, or the combat. Sad, but it is what it is. Prey on the other hand is in my top 5.

I don't know about criminally underrated. Couple things I hate about the game. Enemies. Mimic is so cool idea, kind of a facehugger, but with that terrifying ability to mimic objects, cool ok? Yes, but that mechanic is absolutely ruined almost in the very beginning of psychoscope. Pop up psychoscope and reveal them, what why? Then there's the enemy scanning itself which just doesn't make sense and is tedious. Then the typhoons are just lame enemies imo and aren't anything terrifying. Why ruin enemies making them virtually all have huge sounds? It really, really ruins the mood imo. I would understand some enemies making noice, but here it's almost all of them. Then cystoid or whatever that sack was, 0 cool things in that enemy. Static enemy you destroy and then bunch of things swarm to you. Whoopy doo. Then the fact that typhoon is essentially only main enemy that evolves... Getting just essentially more stats throughout the game, incredly sloppy and boring design. Don't get me wrong, I like the game, but it's most certainly not a holy grail of gaming and reason is that pisspoor design choice with enemies and that's every single one of them. 7-8/10

@cwavy_6193took a few attempts for me too but I inevitably fell in love with it. The most important thing to keep in mind with Prey is you need to be immersed in it. You have to be patient and read the emails, the notes, and enjoy the influences of Alien, 2001, Star Wars, Dead Space, etc. Traversing the GUTS was my fav part. Also keep in mind that sometimes games just aren't for you. I finished The Witcher 3 after 55 hours and I'll never play it again. I hated nearly every aspect of it, kept waiting for it to click. And I spent a couple hundred dollars on roguelikes before I finally realized that I just don't like them in practice.

I may be a simple guy but walking around and hitting things with a wrench in a sci-fi world just gives me ratchet and clank vibes and I loved it. [edit] empathy isn't required for cooperation. If the typhon recognize that numbers equal better chances of survival, then working together is better for each individual and doesn't require empathy.

Absolutely love this game, you did a good job with this video, I still need to get into Mooncrash more, I’m not a huge fan of roguelikes and it deterred me from continuing my playthrough at the time but I feel like it’ll be fulfilling when I really push through the start of it. I’ve replayed the base game maybe 10 times now and the start until Hardware Labs is a bit frustrating to have to go through multiple times but once it opens up it’s so much fun just exploring several times attempting new techniques.

I remember one of the gameplay trailers which made me go "Hey that's like System Shock!" and it so similar to those games and some blatant references like the Looking Glass tech. Really enjoyed it back then when it released. Wasn't really a fan of the dlc due to the roguelike nature though. I'm surprised you didn't like the zero-g sections since I'm a huge fan of the Descent games and I think it's a neat callback to System Shock 1's hacking minigame but that was a nightmare to play, at least for me.

In Mooncrash there are two ways how Typhon escaped shows. One showne there, but other is that one of the test subjects is "convinced" by Typhon Telepath to disable safety on Escape Pod gate and Escape while carrying a Mimic. Problem I found with both base game and Mooncrash is step change in difficulty levels. While in Mooncrash you can just grind a bit until you infuse more stuff (mechanic later used in Deathloop), in base game you start like: hard (buth OK) -> Medium -> Brutal ->Very Hard -> hard -> brutal again etc. Problem is with introduction with new more powerful type of typhon. Telepaths and Technopaths are just so powerful... and then the Nightmare. In Mooncrash problem is similar, but like I said - you will never get blocked, maybe irritated, as you always progress due to timeloop mechanic.

I really like these kinds of thorough reviews, but I have a bit of a problem with how spoilers are handled. I wanted to listen to the review to get me back into the game, but since I never finished it I couldn't really grasp where the spoilers started and where they ended. It would help a lot if you could put time stamps for where the spoilers end in the videos. That's just my two cents, most of the time people watch reviews when they are on the fence about buying the game or not... ;) Other than that thanks for you videos, been enjoying them a lot these days. TL;DR: They are a hivemind, hence why they don't need mirror neurons. Robots don't need hearts. Prey was called prey because bethesda wanted to use the IP they had saved. A little bit late for the comment considering when the vid was posted, however for anyone that also happens to come across it, a few things: The game Prey was called like that because daddy Bethesda said so. They had the IP, and they told them to call it that, so they had to adapt the original story to fit the name as best as they could without changing the original story too much. It was proposed to be called Typhon before that, but imo that wasn't the best name either lmao Also, they lack mirror neurons and work together because they aren't individuals like you and I. They are a complete hivemind entity, controlled by a mega typhon called Apex. So they don't need to feel to work together, they are just ordered to do so by the Apex and they do so. This is because of their life cycle, which in summary is: 1- Apex releases millions of mimics into space. 2- Mimic encounters organic life and devours its consciousness. 3- Multiplies (Occasionally an 'elite' mimic is created) 4- Some mimics evolve into Weavers when population is vast enough 5- Elites supply energy for Weavers 6- Weavers create various entities: Phantoms, Cystoids, Telepaths and Technopaths. It can also turn phantoms into Nightmares. 7- Weavers create 'coral' from prey's consciousness Weaver's creations (Phantoms, etc.) defend the coral. 8- Once enough coral has been created, it begins sending a signal that calls upon the Apex 9- The Apex receives a signal and goes there to devour EVERYTHING 10- See step 1 So it's not like they work out of the goodness of their hearts. Like ants, it's the only thing they know what to do. Robots don't need hearts, and typhon don't need to feel. So they lack them neurons. Just a little something for everyone who's interested!

I def think if you analyze the irks you have with the game you could have an endless back and forth with explanations and counter-arguments. I don't think the plot really needs to be perfect. But anyway, Typhon seemingly having empathy for each other and not for other races makes sense to me. The Typhon don't have a hive mind but they have as close to one as you can get without actually having one. The power of this ability sharing is that inevitably you could have every member of the race with every available ability, at which point they're all equal and working for the same goal, and might even consider themselves part of a whole. Idk if I'm explaining this well but basically, even though they don't have a hive mind (shared senses), that doesn't mean they see themselves as individuals. Typhon see other Typhon as another organ in the same body. I don't have confirmation of this from the game so much as it just seems like the natural result of mass-sharing of abilities. It's communism, but instead of money, it's skills that are wholly shared. Typhon lacking empathy doesn't mean they should kill each other because even something like an ant (assuming ants have no empathy) wouldn't ever think to kill itself or cannibalize it's own organs to aid the brain. Typhon having no empathy means they kill humans in order to reproduce in the same way humans cut grass to avoid catching ticks. There's no thought beyond survival. A corporation buying the space station from a gov (with a healthy dose of corruption involved) isn't a stretch for me personally given that we already live in a world where SpaceX seemingly has more support than NASA from the general public and gov. It's also possible that the corporation bought the station when typhon were thought to be no more useful than a random bacteria on Europa, and upon inventing the neuromod using typhon, the corporation was too large and prominent to be dismantled. I personally draw parallels with Airline companies, which have failed so often and yet never been nationalized even though that'd be entirely cheaper and healthier for everybody, simply because those airline companies got into the market before the government thought to do so and are now so large that they just bribe the right people to get bailed out using the public's tax dollars. "give me a problem and $1000 of someone else's money and I'll have no qualms about spending that money to fix the problem."

Easy top 3 game i ever played. What i enjoyed the most, is that you dont feel at any point through the game like you are overpowered, like most games do. It keeps tension. You can't easily destroy enemies from the corner, you cannot hide behind some cargo or whatever, and enemies can destroy you if you not careful. Ofcourse i played on nightmare, but its very difficult to make difficulty right i feel like. A lot of the times games are more annoying then difficult, and just encourage some cheap tactics, and prey doesnt even have any. And difficulty is so well made. Like typhoons on nightmare move way more then on hard, teleport around the place and stuff. Anyway, combat really adds up a lot to a creepy atmosphere and keeps the tension. Ten outa ten game.
