You hold the ace if you're looking for help form the audience. It's hard to hear specific numbers in the shouting, so help is in the form of "keep going" or "stop". The audience is usally pretty good so it pays to listen. When they say stop you might want to add a small amount (1, 2, or 3 hundred) since the audience, and you, fear getting a high card and going over the price. This fear tends to stop people a little early, especially since high cards are more common (because of the face cards).

It should never have been brought up anyway. The rule of waiting to play an ace is antiquated. During its first decade of gameplay, when cars were somewhere between $3,000-$8,000 and contestants had a range of only $200-$1,000 to work with, the contestant could make the ace any amount of money from $1 to $1,000. It was always great strategy back then to wait until they could play the ace to pinpoint the exact bid they wanted, rather than draw another card from the deck and possibly go over.

Drew did a way better job explaininy this game back in his early years. These days he just says whatever card they draw it will be times 100. Now I wonder if anyone ever told him after nine hundred isn't 10 hundred.
Most contestants do understand the ACE rule. But here's the thing....sometimes they may not be sure what to bid on the car right away. So they may draw a couple more cards, before they make a decision.
This is definitely one of the last game to used this particular design. They used during the first few years in the Drew Carey era, but by 2014, it’s gets even worse when they updated and revamped the new “Card Game” with a Las Vegas motif and the animation is godawful replacing the traditional scoreboard that they used for many years on so many different game shows, except this one. The newly revamped “Card Game” is absolute BS.
