I used to like this game, Hurdles. It was so much fun to watch and play along with. Every time Bob fired off that starter's pistol, I used to think that something would have dropped from the ceiling.
Wouldn't it be funny to see a rat or a bat just drop dead after he shot the gun in the air. Maybe a lost pigeon just falls dead and lands on the contestant, getting them convered in blood LOL. That would make great TV.
I loved Hurdles but from what I've read it was a mechanical nightmare. This is the first game I can remember watching on TPIR when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old way back in 1977.
You're thinking of "It's Optional", the only pricing game where a contestant wins two cars. A contestant is given a set number of options (whitewall tires, AM-FM radio, etc.); what he (she) is to do is to add options to an automobile without going over the price of the higher-priced automobile.
I saw Hurdles back in January 1977 when I was visiting my grandparents in Arizona and my grandfather had The Price Is Right on. I think they discontinued this game because the hurdles would sometimes not go up properly.
@@Metalman200xdamnit Yeah, the hurdles wouldn't go up correctly. I think I saw a video of a Hurdles failure, and the contestant was automatically awarded the failing hurdle.
Yeah, but they changed the rules in that version. Instead of choosing which of the products of each set is less than the hurdler's price, there are just three products and you have to guess if each of them is higher or lower than the hurdler's price. Whoever did that either hasn't seen the hurdles game or the game itself couldn't handle the original rules. I'm guessing the former.
They should bring this game back but make it so the contestant has the option of stopping when they pass a hurdle. The first hurdle can be worth $1,000 cash, the second hurdle $5,000 cash and if the contestant successfully passes the last hurdle, he or she gets the prize plus the money. If the contestant chooses to stop at the first or second hurdle, then he or she gets to keep whatever money they've accumulated up to that point.
I have fond memories of watching this game with my grandfather when he had The Price Is Right on back in 1977. I think it was retired because of the hurdles not going up the correct distance, or not rising at all, and messing up the game.
At least Grand Game utilizes similar pricing concepts. The Target Price is similar to the Hurdler's price, but I like how Grand is a progressive game with a bailout option.
Janice Pennington would have preferred Hurdles over Cliff Hangers since he missing boyfriend at the time was a mountain climber, not a track and field athlete. Why Cliff Hangers is still played after 40 years and not Hurdles is beyond me.
Hurdles had incessant malfunctions, not to mention also the game had one of the lower win percentages of any game that has been played on "The Price Is Right" since the show's inception in 1972.
sha11235 There was one from around 1976-1977 where a contestant was playing for motorcycles; the contestant for her last hurdle chose Airwick for the third hurdle that her hurdler had to jump over, and when the hurdle failed to come up, and Bob had them reveal the price ($.61), that was one of several malfunctions they had playing Hurdles.
@@EricEbac22 Actually, they did make the game somewhat easier to win in its final couple years. There was even a playing in early 1983 where the Hurdler had a value above a dollar, so it was inflation-proof. And the funny thing was that was around the time that the hype for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics was building up. You know what we got instead? On The Nose, and that barely lasted a year. There weren't any malfunctions as well during the final season on air, so I'd imagine that the problems must of happened off stage.
OMG!! A CARRIBEAN CRUISE WORTH ONLY $1,000 SOME DOLLARS?! How times do change--now that cruise is at least between $10,000 to near almost $20,000. I think they should bring the Hurdles game back to TPIR to start the 52nd year OF COURSE IN THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY INSTEAD OF MECHANICAL!! Finally Hurdles should played for A NEW CAR 🚙 since they never played Hurdles for a car during the Barker years.
