In this vlog, I take you to a Vietnamese supermarket in District 1, Saigon. I take you through the entire grocery store and show you the prices of everything they have. Anyone wondering about the cost of living in Vietnam should definitely check out this video!
My shopping list consisted of what I was eating for dinner that night and a snack. I got some chicken breast, avocado, eggs, crackers, and soy sauce. I also got some chicken pate for my cat. The total cost of all of my groceries was 150k vnd or $6.25. I'm not sure exactly what this would cost back in America today, but I know that the grocery prices here are significantly cheaper than in the USA.
Even though I had a relatively short shopping list, I wanted to make an informative video for people thinking about moving to Vietnam, or people just generally interested in the cost of living in Saigon (particularly the cost of shopping for groceries). So I went through the entire store and reviewed the prices of every item including:
-fruits
-vegetables
-fresh meats
-cold cuts
-dairy products
-frozen foods
-noodles
-rice
-sauces
-cooking oil
-spices
-household cleaners
-laundry detergent
-toiletries
-cookies
-drinks
-beer
-and more!
It's noteworthy that basically all of the items are in Vietnamese, so being able to read some basic Vietnamese would be very helpful while shopping at this supermarket. Also, I asked an employee whether or not any of the staff speak English, and she told me no. But you could pretty easily use Google translate to ask any of the employees for help.
For the future expats and travelers of Vietnam, I hope this video gives you a clearer idea of what the day to day costs of living, food, and groceries are in Ho Chi Minh City.

Dude, this helped a lot. Thank you. I was trying to find how prices are explained in Vietnamese and couldn’t find anything. I probably worded my question poorly but Google usually helps my stupidness and translates what I’m trying to say or ask. Anyway, thanks again for this video. I subscribed to see what other interesting things I can find on your channel!

Maybe my eyes are fooling me because I watching it on video with florescent lightings, but the herbs, fruits and Vegetables seem a lot fresher and cheaper at the wet markets than the supermarkets. Believe it or not, the ground pork is same price as in America. The price for eggs have also dropped to $2 for a dozen eggs in America too. Food is no longer super cheap in Vietnam.
@BigTimeBentley
@BigTimeBentley Год назад
you might be right about the wet markets. One thing I like about the grocery store though is the straightforward, no haggle pricing, which you don't really get at a market
@ChrissieSM

After watching Tyler's videos, I conclude that the food, at least in Saigon, is not that cheap, especially for the locals who earn less than Westerners. As for eggs, here in the UK, 6 eggs (yes, 6 not 12) cost £1.80 (= US$2.26).

@@VanTran-ne4yf They have obviously never shopped for Costco's eggs recently. Next time I go to Costco, I'll take a picture of the eggs price for you. It used to be $5 for a dozen about 6 months ago, but now that the avian flu crisis is over in America, and they have a new batch of eggs layer chickens grown and laying lots of eggs, the eggs prices have dropped dramatically in America. At Costco anyway.

the grocery prices seems to be 1/2 to 1/3 of that in Calif US, however, yur wage is like 1/10 of that in the US. If u weight the cost of food to the local wage, the cost is very high, do u agree?
@hoodhunter3262
@hoodhunter3262 Год назад
1/2 to 1/3 the price of CA? I don't know which part of CA you are referring to. But up here in the BayArea, NorCal, his grocery bill would be $20-25. And you are way off on wage comparison. Average local wage in Saigon is $400 a month. I make that in half a day. Realistically average wage in CA is $65,000 a year so that will be $5500 a month. $400 to $5500 is 1/13. nevertheless I agree, for supermarket like that might be on the mid-upper end for locals. I'm a bit shocked by the price of ground pork. That is actually more expensive than here in the US..
@ChrissieSM
@ChrissieSM Год назад
@@hoodhunter3262good on you to earn $400 in half a day. Do you think that the ordinary workers in the US are on "average" wages? The supermarket checkout people, the department store workers, the cleaners, even the teachers? I would say the average worker in the US, UK, earn around 5 times more than their Vietnamese counterparts.

I don't think meat is cheap in Vietnam! The meat section, on the sign it said "THỊT NHẬP KHẨU". that means it is imported from somewhere, not the local pork farms.
