We're pouring and finishing a garage concrete floor in this video. I'm showing you how I price or give estimates for a floor this size.
I'll include the cost of labor and profit, plus all the other materials we use to finish this concrete floor.
Not included in the price is under floor sub-grade prep. I don't do gravel work, the GC subs that out to an excavation contractor.
In the video I break down the costs for you so you can see what's involved in giving someone an estimate.

Up here in RI- just had floor poured in my garage three weeks ago. 26’w x 28’d garage, was $3,800 total. 5” thick, Has rebar in door openings, wire, and they did the foam around the edge. No insulation under it, just the plastic vapor barrier. Did wind lip at garage doors, and they saw cut it the next day.

Thanks for the transparency, appreciate the cost breakdown. Wish you the best for all future projects. BTW for the people who are saying it's expensive they don't understand how to run a business & the expenses associated with running a business with multiple people ont he payroll.

Great video!. I’m having a 24x24 garage built in the spring up here in Minnesota. Who knows what pricing will be for the concrete at that time, but I anticipate it will be higher than fall 2022 prices. (It got too cold to pour in November.) Regardless, it is helpful to learn about the economics of the business. Lots of respect for you and all the guys who have made this your profession. Thank you for the insights.

I had a floor poured last year (by another youtube concrete channel) that had a particular section that was 6" thick vs 4". Price was all quoted by the square foot with 2 extra yards listed as line item charge for the thickened area. The end number worked out very similar to your total once I subtract $2 / ft2 for no foam under my slab. Thanks for the info, very insightful for not only concrete tradesmen but also people saving for shop builds

dang he got me, jk I don't use foam. I was kidding. I was curious what your concrete price is up there I watch the 1 u did at your desk but concrete labor and mudd is high in Indiana. we charge alot. but I'm one of the cheapest in my area. but u work for builders which I solid work but I don't bid by Sq foot I bid by days and cross reference w Sq feet. we r up around 13 a Sq foot around indy for driveways or better. I charged 20k for a 26 yard driveway but we had to tear it out too. I was at 22 but I wanted to make sure to land it. u charged 7 grand for this even though there is alot of material u did pretty good. I would do that garrage w no foam no prep about 3500 to just pour it. no prep.

Thanks for the breakdown, your cost is reasonable. People play dumb when it comes to you pouring a 24' x 24' four inch thick mix, doing back breaking work and they complain about a $3k profit on the job, meanwhile big pharma, big tech and military industrial complex make billions and trillions on assembly line or virtual products and no one questions them.

Looks like things are more expensive in the Pacific Northwest, although this is for a slightly different more complex pour: This is for a 42x40 shop floor on which a metal barn will be built: excavate top layer and move soil onsite place and compact 120 ton of 3” minus base rock and top with ¾” minus grade rock compacted vapor barrier make forms with a deeper edge on perimeter for drop down footing place #3 rebar 24” on center cross-direction place 2-#4 rebar continuous in perimeter footing pour and smooth finish concrete , 5" thick, 3500psi saw cut control joints seal concrete remove forms & clean up $33,000.

Like that self leveling concrete! Most of the guys around here pour it so damn dry that they work themselves to death! Early 60s concrete was 15 bucks a yard and I charged 50 cents a square foot, 55 cents if a rock salt finish. That was for grading, forming and pouring. Did mostly swimming pool decking, which is a lot more difficult than a flat slab.

@MrMajikman1
@MrMajikman1 Год назад
@@TheEngineerJason "As long as the mixture isn't too dry?" What is the correct terminology for that, oh great one? I have my own business and I have been in the trade for forty years and still going. As an owner in the new construction field of full basement foundations, I have had to correct Architects on their structural/dimensional designs, I've had to correct Civil Engineers on their grading plans, I've had to assess ground density on site for bearing loads simply by looking at certain clays/soils. I have to make field determinations of which way to properly run the water off of the surface of the concrete so as not to impact a surrounding building. All of that with just a High School diploma, but 40 years of field experience. However, you are right, the "laboring part" is rather easy, but that is not ALL that is involved in concrete construction...if you are to be successful. Sure, you can pour your concrete with a 10" "SLUMP" (btw, that is the correct terminology for determining how "dry" or "wet" the concrete is) without using a water reducer...if you want it to crack. Obviously, there is much more to concrete construction that YOU and many other people are not aware of. Sun, wind, temperature, humidity, ALL contribute to how the concrete reacts as far as curing and finishing is concerned. And NO, concrete doesn't just "level and finish itself" regardless of what RU-vid tells you.

If you were in my area i'd hire you to do a 600-1200 sq foot slab on a new project next summer. Your pricing seems fair. I did a 40x60 slab w/ footings for a big steel building 7 years ago for $12,000 but I did the excavation and prep myself, including engineered foundation to support a garco steel building. For a 2-3 car garage finished that's about double per sq foot of the big building I did but prices have gone up and your labor is worth double the cost of the concrete. I honestly don't trust most of the guys doing this work any longer - the finisher I had do the last slab was very fair and he has since retired due to health issues. At the time the finished cost for everything was going to be about $20k in 2015 not including my labor for 2400 sq feet if I didn't lift a finger.

Any suggestions on what to use on my corners to decrease chances that will corners will burst open during pouring concrete? I am located in Colorado and temps are 45 to 75 degrees range overnight to high noon. Thanks as this is my first concrete project. Very difficult to find anyone to do this job and that is why at 77 years old I am have dug the whole project (couldn't even find a backhoe for rent)

We use metal banding, google it, it's a thin strip of metal that has holes in it. Comes in a roll so you can cut it to any length. Wrap it around the corner and screw it to both sides. It'll keep the corner from blowing out.

for new construction garage is high , even hen you don't put wire mash and foam , still 8$ is a lot . I would do that all day everyday like you for that price but here in Michigan Mexicans do new costruction for 5-5.5$ per sqft prep and finish (no mesh or foam ) .its unbelievable .

Mike, I just recently moved to Glastonbury CT. I'm looking to get a 6" slab poured in a 20' x 30' barn. I'm new here, have no network, so I'm just using the Google machine to find contractors in the area that do slab work. I must have called six contractors and not so much as a call back. It seems like a simple job. Is everybody that busy right now? Where else could I look to find a good contractor? I've been watching your show long enough now that I might just try to do it myself. Appreciate any advice you have.

Find the closest ready mix concrete plant, call them and ask for the concrete dispatcher. Ask him who the best slab contractors are in your area, and you may even get their cell phone numbers. The dispatcher knows who is good and who isn't.

Wow that’s way higher than what we get in Louisiana. My flat work rate is $6.50 a foot for 4” slab and we do the dirt work. Of corse we don’t have any foam are anything we have to put down. But that’s still a big difference. I’m at $6.50 and still get under bid a lot of times. I’ll go look at a project and see that some one else did it.

Hey mike I’m in Vermont and for the last 4-5 years I’ve been charging around $500 per yard for 4” slabs with a thickened edge and 24” grid of 1/2” rebar + cost of extra materials like styrofoam. I’m guessing that our pricing is similar, I think I’m going to go up a little bit considering the cost of concrete and steel has gone up. Thanks for sharing your rates it’s always helpful to me 👍

In all my years doing concrete we never did styro in a garage , and very seldom wire. Concrete was about $25 per yard and by the year 2000 concrete was up in the $90,s, now it’s much more than that. The prep work is a time consumer, in your area, they seem to have the grade really close from what I see on your video,s. Hauses concrete in PA nobody has any grade remotely close, regardless you have to get paid for your time and or equipment use, thanks for your spread sheet on cost.

How do I estimate how many cubic yards of concrete I need for a swimming pool? I understand how to convert square feet to cubic yards but I am confused with the math behind the construction of a swimming pool. If someone could provide me with the formula. That would help me a lot. Another way I ask my question is as follows. For example, a pool is 45 feet in length, 15 feet in width and the concrete is 0.6 inches in depth. The pool’s shallow end is 4 feet, and the deep end gradually declines to 12 feet deep. (Ignore the steps and possible ledges in the pool, i got that figured out). Thank you to anyone that responds.
