IntenseAngler's "Tip Of The Week", Episode 20. A highly effective and simple to make primitive fishing tool... the gorge hook. In this episode I demonstrate how to make, bait, and use the gorge hook in an actual fishing situation. This tool is among the simplest of the primitive fishing hooks. It is in essence a straight bodied device tapering down to points on each end with a groove notched in the center to accommodate the attachment of line or natural cordage. Gorge (or toggle) hooks were historically created from wood or bone, and work based on the following principle: Bait is threaded on the hook in such a way as to keep the hook running parallel with the line. When a fish engulfs the bait, the hook comes free from the bait, turns sideways, and then lodges in the fishes throat. The primary difficulty with this style of primitive fishing hook is matching the size of the hook to the approximate size category of the fish that you are most likely to encounter. The smallest of these hooks should ideally be made from bone so that they don't break due to their smaller size.

Compared to other primitive hooks this method is so simple and effective. In a survival situation it also has the added benifit of being very effective as an absentee fishing method. You can see how unlikely it is a fish will be able to spit it once it's been swallowed. Leaving you free to set and forget a few lines and get on with other camp chores. Great vid as always! Thanks for sharing.

I like the fact that you were actually able to demonstrate the use of this method. I see so many videos on primitive fishing gear and wonder how the heck it really works. Some of the stuff seems so bulky, weak or ineffective. Thanks for the great video. Tim

I've used a gorge hook before and baited it with popcorn chicken, and surprisingly caught a brook trout with it. I was super happy and proud of myself for doing it the primitive way.

Yeah, I didn't think he was going to make it after all of that, lol. Luckily those chubs are pretty hardy fish. In regards to your question: When I am going to be fishing a body of water that I am unfamiliar with, I will generally just go online and do a bit of research to find out the most that I can about the area that I will be fishing. There's tons of useful info out there! Thank you very much for the kind compliments about the video and the FB page by the way... much appreciated!

Thanks you Karen... I'm really glad that you enjoyed this! The braided line that I typically use is called SpiderWire. A couple of other common brands that are good are Berkley FireLine and PowerPro Braid. Walmart or any outdoor retailer should generally have them in stock. If you have any trouble finding some just let me know and I'll be happy to help out :-) P.S. Eve says hello and she hopes you are doing well!

Thank you very much for the kind compliments on the videos my friend, I truly appreciate that. I'm sorry to hear that the nails bother you so much. I've thought many times about trimming them due to some of the comments that I receive on some of my videos, but they are a part of me and I don't think that I would be staying true to myself if I cut them just for making videos. Very best regards to you and yours!

THANK YOU! I have NEVER seen any survivalist use this! They tend to rely only on a spiral cone trap and act helpless if that doesn't work (in primitive survival, anyway). I wonder if you could get natural cordage to tie that tightly on a small groove like that but it'd be worth experimenting with all kinds of cordage. Or just always carry a little bit of line with you.

This is awesome. As soon as you said it was the easiest out of all I knew what you were talking about. I just saw something similar a couple weeks ago on one of my favorite shows, "Swamp People". The father son team of RJ and Jay Paul use an old Houma Indian fishing technique with the exact same set up. Only they were fishing for gators. Great job on showing us the old along with the new.

Just a little note. This fishing method is not meant to be a catch and release method. Generally speaking this "hook" sets in the fishes stomach. So a note to everyone, most states this is illegal, but if you have to use this method for survival, plan on eating whatever you catch.
