In this weeks hog tour video we're joining Ryan Gill, of Hunt Primitive, and Vastin Hall to try'n take a wild hog with primitive bow and stone points in south Florida. Both Ryan and Vastin are accomplished primitive bow hunters, having taken quite a few big game animals with selfbows, stone points, and cane arrows. Ryan has also speared several animals with an atlatl including hogs and a bison! This is primitive bowhunting hogs at it's best!
It's not often that my traditional bow hunting setup is the most modern in the crowd. But that was certainly the case on this hunt. I opted to stick with my trusty single bevel tuffhead broadheads while the other guys used some very small stone points that Ryan makes. We had a great discussion on some research that Ryan is conducting on the effectiveness of these small arrow heads when it comes to penetration and stopping power.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

Great vid, Clay--always fun to see masters at work, and I appreciate your thoughtful perspective toward "modern" gear. I was hunting with a compound buddy one time, and during the mid-day break we were discussing the relative merits of our gear. He wondered if stone age men had this same conversation. "Grok could use bow, but Grok a traditionalist at heart. Grok just use a rock."

I love primitive and traditional archery, and I love it when proving that out ancestors used smaller points than the archeologist think is possible and in doing so we prove that stone is a viable alternative to steel
@theeddorian
@theeddorian 4 года назад
The archaeologists actually know perfectly well what size points were commonly used for hunting, and that little, side-notched point was typical over much of North America for much of the last 500-1,000 years. Larger or longer points were occasionally used, but what nobody is mentioning is that it is more than likely, must hunting points may have been of wood. Poor preservation masks this, but a rockshelter in Northern California yielded many times as many wooden as stone points. The points were fired/charred lightly and then abraded into a sharp point. Many showed some polishing. Most were about the size and diameter of a lead pencil.

Ive taken hogs, deer and my first black bear with obsidian heads. I too was skeptical at first and had to really convince myself to use them. My guide in Maine basically told me no on the use of a stone head. It certainly changed his mind and mine when a harvested a nice bear with trad gear. Complete pass thrus on every animal ive taken with obsidian, and the internal damage caused by them are, well spectacular. None have made it over 40 yards. Give it a try, you be amazed. Im certainly intrigued by Ryan's small head practices, I will have to follow this more. Good hunting!

Great video. Nice merger of two awesome channels. I wonder if the resistance to stone points and atlatls is less about fear/emotion or understanding but has more to do with skill required. Steel points bring a fundamental basic consistency. For the most part, a particular design, once proven, will work if used properly. Creating a stone point that is actually functional is not something that is common. Opening deer and larger animal hunting to stone points would potentially lead to people making, buying and using very poorly edged points with very poor results. You would almost have to have a regulated pool of people who have proven their ability to consistently make adequate points and some sort of system for hunters to prove that they understand the use case and limitations for them. Wow, that really looks "nanny state" to the extreme now that I've written it out. Probably makes it a lot more practical to just say "nobody gets to use them". I don't know, that is just sort of off the top of my head. I find it ironic (and kinda sad TBH) that some of the most basic technologies humans have ever created are prohibited from use.

@zebulunturner I think it’s more complex than that. As a “kids these days” myself (one who also makes primitive bows and stone tipped arrows and whatnot), I think it’s important to recognize that for genx people worked hard at their job to afford a house, and now people work hard at their three jobs to not afford a house. The ones who have a wealthy enough family to support them just opt to not work hard, as they figure it will have the same outcome. The ones who aren’t wealthy enough just suffer in their three jobs, and it can be a little insulting to say that they’re lazy. Nothing against you, just want to share my thoughts as a person. We live in a different world now. Cheers!

it is amazing to me, what was once state of the art, weapon of choice is now frowned upon by those who are ignorant of what these weapons have done in the past. From mamoths to small game, meat was harvested by those using only these type weapons. very cool on the small stone tips, makes one double think about the arrow heads that we find from the past. The Indians didn't have high poundage bows but they sure were wicked with them. Tim Wells takes big game with a steel tipped spear as have who knows how many other people in the past as well with stone tips for centuries. Always love your bows, wish I could build a 35-40 # self bow myself but half blind in one eye and crippled up now. Don't ever slow down, keep at it like you are doing before you get old like some of us LOL.

Ad a kid I lived down the street from a small Indian museum first bow I get saw was made by some one who had died over 100 years before. The man that owned the museum said to find one that old still in decent shape was rare. Said they took there bows with them when the died. But that's what got me into bows as a kid tried making them with not much success so eventualy my first bow was a compound and after many years shooting compound finally going to recurve. To complete the circle hope to build my first home made bow. Every day hunting with a bow is a journey and every step closer you can get to your prey you earnd.

Love the hunt … “THE HUNTER” Woke with great joy and swiftly dressed cold tragic morning braking white breath The lonely highway followed Flashing white wings of Rabbits Face stationary in a window Stars follow me to the dark woods Quiet and cautious hunter Cast no shadow kissed by the cold Waking dual eyes, prepared to go A gentle wind informed me so And bathed my skin in the stars Cool glow Harsh dry leaves Who skim the trees Making no easy distance They keep their watch on the living Don’t walk so loud They say Swift ears strain for what eyes Fight to explain Sudden movements Most beautiful vision Was truly religious At the end Our ancestors knew it too.

I bought my first bow a couple weeks ago, a 55# takedown recurve. I think I started off with a way to heavy draw weight, I'm 44 220lbs but dang. I always wondered why you don't do stone. When you work a point it's either gonna break or not. The ones that hold together pass the torture test. If you have ever been cut by a pice of glass you will know that 45 degree edge doesn't slow against flesh. I've had a few points survive that really shouldn't have.
