SKUNK PIGS! Traditional Bowhunting Javelina

This week we're back down in the south Texas brush country bowhunting javelina along the US/Mexico border. Javelina are interesting little critters that look similar to wild hogs but are actually a completely different genus. They have a scent gland on their back and smell a bit rank which earns them the name skunk pig. Because of that smell, most folks think they're wild game not fit to eat but I'm out to prove that wrong in this catch clean cook bowhunting vid. My buddy Damon is hunting with his Bear recurve bow and I'm hunting with a fire hardened hickory longbow I made in a bow building video a while back. We'll be hunting by spot and stalk through the prickly pear flats of the desert.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

Anyone that says javalina has an off taste. Had a javi that wasn't properly field dressed. The key is two knifes... one for skinning, the other for breaking them down. The key in cooking them, is low and slow. Your video showed how it's supposed to be done, start to finish!

Heck yeah, you’re in my state, welcome to Texas Clay! If you like hogs and javelinas you’re in the right place. Hogs are rampant, most of my deer hunts turn into hog hunts, but that’s fine with me. I was just thinking to myself that you’re in a good arrowhead area just when y’all found one. When I’m at my lease, I always keep one eye on the ground just for that reason. Looks like you guys had a good time. Congrats on the hunt bud!!

I have had the same about Antelope in South Dakota, but then there it is people cooking it like they had deer as the first mistake as it needs a bit slower and lower cooking then Deer. I do not like Antelope for the taste of the meat even when cooked right as the meat has so little fat there is no flavor, it is like eating a bunch of Deer that has a cardboard taste to it sure it might be like deer in the texture when cooked right but taste is not there for me.

My first hunt with a trad bow was for javelina this year. I had a great time. I got into them 3 times and had one shot opportunity. Thought he was 30 and he ended up being 25 and my arrow grazed his back hairs but luckily didn’t hit him. So close! Dang those tacos look amazing! I will definitely be trying for them again next year! Thanks Clay.

Great hunt guys! Where I hunt in SE Oklahoma near a decent sized CoE lake we have a big problem with the cactus as well. Unfortunately around here the cactus is growing underneath the grass so you think you are walking across a good prairie but it will put quills through your boots quickly. I’ve worn Danner snake boots for several years, the type that look like sneakers so that I can move around quickly. But even then sometimes I will get a sticker that will slowly work it’s way through the side or bottom of the boot.

It's very interesting what you said about not having the outside of the hide touch the meat. My dad and I run a hunting business in South Africa and we hunt a lot of waterbuck, which a great many people will tell you is inedible. But the concept is the same. Waterbuck true to their name spend a lot of time in and around water and therefore produce an oil that sort of waterproofs their hide. Well, when skinning it's important not to get that oil on the meat. And if done correctly waterbuck is one of the best game meats in Africa. Love the videos btw

@LittlecAMG

The UK government have deemed it unethical to kill with a bow but an over privileged prep boy with a poor place shot from a rifle is sufficient. We can only use a bow on the grounds of an archery club. If caught carrying a bow on public land or private is classed as trespass with offensive weapon. We can't even carry a lock knife 😂

EXCELLENT VIDEO! That old arrowhead gave me an idea... would be super interesting mounting an ancient arrowhead on a hand-crafted arrow and using your homemade bow for a primitive catch and cook. Maybe show us how the arrow is made, fire-hardened, and the stone point secured on the shaft. Not even sure a primitive catch and cook like this exists on the web so might be a first!
@lucasbuassali4686
@lucasbuassali4686 Год назад
Jason, that would not be a good idea, stone points must be extremely sharp in order to make a clean and ethical wound on a animal. To make an artifact stone point into a hunting point again, you would need to sharpen it, destroing it. What can you do, in fact it is something that Ryan Gill does it perfectly, is make new stone points to hunt. watch Ryan´s videos and get a feel for it, his channel is huntprimitive here on RU-vid.
@jasonborn867
@jasonborn867 Год назад
@@lucasbuassali4686 I couldn't see the arrowhead well enough to know it was dull, and not sure unused sharpened edges deteriorate over time. A steel edge would likely lose sharpness over millennia, but not sure about stone. Regardless, Clay made his bow from scratch so it would be interesting seeing him make an arrow and use a fresh arrowhead for a primitive hunt--probably fetch a lot of views on this hunting channel. Thanks for recommending that channel and the content looks intriguing--I did subscribe!
@lucasbuassali4686
@lucasbuassali4686 Год назад
I guess the edge deteriorates over time, just like normal rocks, even most when considering the very fine edge necessary for a good sharp point. Of course that depending on the enviroment it will happen at a different rate. I agree with you that would be a nice video, although i believe it would raise some ethical questions as well, since ancient stone points its considered archeological artifacts. Anyway, i hope you enjoy Ryan's content, as much as i do, he and Clay even had some hunts together down in Florida. Cheers!
@jasonborn867
@jasonborn867 Год назад
@@lucasbuassali4686 I was watching Ryan knap this morning and was VERY impressed. Now that is some serious skill! Amazing how serrated and sharp he got the edges, and even more impressive aboriginals have fashioned points like his for over 50,000 years. I'll drop a question to him on how long unused arrowheads stay sharp... some of those ancient Clovis points still look mint after thousands of years so will be interesting to hear what he says. Thanks again for recommending the channel!
@lucasbuassali4686
@lucasbuassali4686 Год назад
Its really impressive, beatiful skill indeed, i tried some myself, unfortunaly here in my region in Brazil there isn't much knappable stone to work with. I would love to see Ryan's opnion on this, as i am saying it from common sense instead of personal experience, and so, i might be wrong!
