Primitive Safety Tongs & Prickly Pear Juice Extraction

Some tools can be made from basic natural materials and have a big positive impact to change a situation from surviving to thriving. Water is of huge importance but isn't always readily available. Some plants, like cactus, store large quantities of water inside them. The prickly pear cactus produces delicious juicy fruits loaded with water. Getting the water can be hazardous because of the thorns and glochids, but with some basic tools the process can be completed safely and swiftly.

It may be worth keeping the fruit to use as a cooking ingredient with which to make a syrup, or fruit reduction, in which you can use as a flavoring agent to add to water. In this way, you will be able to reap the benefits of the vitamins and minerals contained in the fibrous skin of the fruit, as well as separate out the seeds in the cooking process. With little other ingredients, this could serve as a viable, primitive gatorade/electrolyte beverage of sorts.

You are correct it tastes as good as it looks. Made my mouth water an I could almost taste it. I never tire of watching you invent things to make your jobs easier, love your juicing container that's really clever. Another idea would be a tall wide mouth pitcher like pot with a pour spout, you could use a chunky size branch to crush the fruit so your hands don't turn all purple in the process. With the pottery you make, I'm sure it be an easy creation for you. Thank you for sharing.

I think about how much work it is. With the cost of food continuously rising I like calculating the value of the wild food I gather. It's still a lot cheaper to buy food at a grocery store, if you calculate the time invested at just the minimum wage. But I also like to consider the quality and the fact that these wild foods truly are 100% naturally grown.

There are many recipes for cactus jelly that I want to try. I have eaten the prickly pear apples when I was much younger. My grandmother told me about how they burned the leaves of the prickly pear to feed their cattle. This was 70 years ago. When I was 5 years old I went out and picked a bunch of the prickly pear apples. I got my hands full of prickly pair spines. We had a devil of a Time getting those out of my hands. I didn't know until many years later that one of the best ways was to use Elmer's Glue. You put the glue on the affected area, let it dry, and then peel the glue and the stickers off all at the same time. Many years later a friend of mine and I went on a poorly planned fishing trip and resolved our hunger by eating the prickly pear apples. We were able to avoid the spines but there's so many seeds they were almost not worth eating.

Im sure you are propably aware but you could make a clay tube and some sort of matching stick/mortar of the size of the tube, and on the bottom side of the tube create holes that would drain the juice and the pulp and leave only seeds in the tool. That would make another project for you to work on and you wouldnt have to dirty your hands like that
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 5 месяцев назад
A juice extractor. That would be a challenging design to make because of the nature of clay during the drying process. Clay tends to shrink and warp slightly while drying and the design you described is really good but not likely to work with clay, at least not in a primitive setting. I realize that in modern society people avoid touching food with their hands. The hands are actually wonderful tools for mashing food and the hands don't get dirty, they get juice on them.

Thanks for the great vid, Chad. I have to say that when I went to the local grocery store, they did have prickly pear fruits for sale...at $3.99 each. I bought three of them to see what they were like. While I like the sweetness and the flavor of the fruits, the fruits (as you mentioned) are mostly seeds with not much pulp. I would try to buy enough to make a glass of juice, but the store does not carry enough of them. Plus, at $3.99 a pop, that's a lot of money just to make a glass of fresh squeezed prickly pear juice. Chad, you are so lucky to stay in an area where your surroundings are practically a grocery store in itself.

He seals pottery by using the rice water and boiling it. He also uses different sorts of oils. The pottery he used in this episode. He did two years ago and it had cracks in, so he used Pinesap to cover the cracks.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 5 месяцев назад
You have to cure it. Just using a pot for cooking food will seal it over time. But you can intentionally seal it by covering it with fat and oil and filling it with a hot starchy liquid like rice water or by using a food that is high in mucilage, like chia seeds, flax seeds, or my favorite, palo verde beans. You let it soak in that hot liquid for a day then pour it out and let it dry. It should be pretty well sealed then. If not, you can repeat the process until it is sealed. The idea is to plug up all the pores of the clay.
