Primitive Soup Cooked Using Deer Skin - Field to Fire- Clam n' Onion

From field foraging to rock boiled soup in a deer skin! You've gotta see this!
This is a look into what cooking a soup took before the advent of clay and metal pots and pans. The process is time consuming and might seem a bit over the top... but imagine what lengths you might go to for something different after weeks/months/years of meat cooked over the flames. Variety is the spice of life and cooking has been a huge part of that life to humanity for tens of thousands of years.

Hey Group Hoping ya'll like this video, admittedly I could have added quite a bit of info in hindsight. This took a great deal more effort than I had hoped in regards to the lack of eyesight... hoping feverently that the surgeries this summer are successful and grant me back some sight. Tell me what you think on this one! I'll try to answer the questions I am sure will come. Comment like crazy on this one if you can, time to get this channel recognized by the RU-vid algorithms once again so these vids get seen. Thank you all, Until Next Time, Bob Hansler

Your way is so much safer if you are not experienced and only have one hide. thanks for this excellent example of what can be done. On the clams, take a shell and scrape out the meat from the others. Thanks for sharing...on a side note...I read somewhere that onions and garlic have thiosulphate which is very toxic to both cats and dogs...it destroys their red blood cells so they get sore and lethargic, but the symptoms are often delayed or subtle so the owner never notices their pet suffering from the toxin...which they would avoid in the wild, but because our cooking can often disguise the flavors of onion and garlic, our pets sometimes fail to detect the thiosulphate toxin and just chow down at their own peril. Didn't look like your pup ingested too much of it or anything, but still figured it couldn't hurt to make sure you knew about it :)
@BobHansler
@BobHansler 6 лет назад
As a Biologist I am versed on the subject. It'd take close to a pound before negatively impacting a dog his size. Quantity is lithe issue with many things. Appreciate the concern.
@tmalonso
@tmalonso 6 лет назад
Glad to hear you already knew about the issue...Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm curious, where do you get that 1lb estimate? For some reason I thought I remembered the formula as half a percent of their body weight can give dogs or cats hemolytic anemia...so by that math, for every 25lbs of pet body weight, it only takes 2 ounces of combined onions/garlic to make them suffer pretty bad...so even 8 ounces can make a 100lb dog sick...unless I'm underestimating the size of your pup, my math seems to cut your estimates in half...not a big difference, but with pets I figure it's better safe than sorry, so I wanted to ask, thanks for the reply!
@shawnsisler3743

Yes, and grapes too. I had a problem with our Rex because he loves onions, he would steal them out of the bin and eat them, got very ill.
@JusBidniss
@JusBidniss 6 лет назад
And of course, another thing to consider is that Huck didn't ingest anywhere close to 2 oz (about 1/4 c) of the actual onions. More like a lick or two of weak onion broth. Which would probably not cause anything more than some stinky gas -- more 'toxic' to Bob than Huck! :)
@tmalonso
@tmalonso 6 лет назад
yep, if you check my original comment I mentioned that Huck didn't have much...also cooking the onions doesn't reduce the toxicity...and its always a gamble when dealing with wild plants...you might stumble across some extra potent wild onions making the store bought onion by weight estimates inadequate ;)

The hot rocks trick is always a crowd pleaser. Reminds me of restaurant fajitas sizzling as they are brought out. Not sure about the dislikes... folks get pretty serious about their soup, might have overstepped somewhere ; )

Be careful about those onions, my friends! There is a look-alike plant that looks like wild onions, but will make you very sick. It's called DEATH CAMASS, and it does NOT have an onion smell. If what you found doesn't have a strong onion or garlic smell LEAVE IT ALONE AND LIVE.

You know, one of the best parts of your videos is the fact that you wear sunglasses. I grew up in, and still live, in Phoenix, AZ. Your environment isn't really alien to me, so it does feel a little like you took a camera into your backyard. I hope that doesn't come off as negative. In fact, I like to think I appreciate it more, the talent you've developed. Learning to survive in an environment that nowadays, supports shut-ins like me, who would die without high-speed internet. It means you went the extra mile, ignoring the modern convenience around you, to prepare for the reality of your environment. The whole lead in to my post is to provide context to the first statement. I'm glad you wear sunglasses. I wither under eye-contact, so it actually makes your videos a lot easier to watch. It's awesome to watch someone _live_ in the *real* , real world. I hope that doesn't sound like gibberish.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wonder if it's because they're bottom feeders and are filtering out toxins/may not be safe to eat?

I miss doing this kind of stuff when I was younger. I grew up and 30 years later still live in a suburban area but I took every chance I got and went camping or to my buddies houses which were out in the boondocks. Plan on moving when the time is right but videos like these help ease the pain since it's definitely been about 10 years I actually enjoyed the outdoors. Thanks for the therapeutic videos, definitely great content and earned my sub.

I had no idea you could eat the seeds of the yucca! It seems really easy to get a lot of callories from that, as you were able to collect a lot in a short amount of time. The mature yucca pods are sweet? Are you able to eat them plain, or do you have to make it into a bread/cook it?
