When I was in my teens, I went to more than 50 Primus concerts. They were some of the best experiences of my young life. The mosh pits were the most positive, polite, and safe that I've ever been in. If someone fell, there were 10 hands lifting you back up instantly. The best show I ever attended was Primus, The Pixies, and Jane's Addiction. These guys create such an excellent vibe for their fans, and are beyond talented. It was a true pleasure seeing this reaction video with you guys.
Hey Jamel, not sure if you will see this or not but if you wanted some more Primus to react to they recently released a new EP called Conspiranoid. Unfortunately it's only 3 songs, but I think you would like them.
@@marksherrick Maybe Les II was named after Leslie then? Perhaps Ed Dawson's role wasn't that great of an achievement, after all? And then you find, that you really gotta set your tomcat for a success. But poor T.L. paid the price.
Anyone else feel that Larry Lalonde is highly overshadowed by Les? Les is an amazing bassist but I don’t think people realize how instrumental Larry is to the sound of Primus. He’s a very underrated guitar player. Larry really does deserve more credit
Jamel, Primus is on tour now doing the full album of Rush's "Farewll to Kings". Primus is another great trio, this time the mad scientist is behind the bass.
@@c.m.b.4868 Primus doesn't discourage audience taping, I've seen a few here and there, and something like this I have to assume the band is self recording as well.
@@marksherrick I've seen recordings from the audience as well. Most of decent quality, but what I really meant was an official recording from Primus themselves. Think about it, A live recording from Primus? Guaranteed, that would sell like hotcakes.
The real reason he didn’t get the matalica gig is the style was too different. Plus the way Les plays he would have a hard time being stifled by a standard rock sound.
Les is incredible & the music Primus puts out there is so unique and fun. To think Les auditioned for the Metallica gg and they told him "you're too fucking good for this band".I enjoy Primus immensely. I think he would have fit in just fine, but they understand music and they don't want him stealing the show every night. On a side note: Cliff Burton was "too good" too.
In the "Behind the Music" ep on Metallica, Les was actually interviewed about his tryout w/ the band. Apparently his goofier musical ideas for them was a turn off, so he had that going against him as well.
Not sure if I already told u this Jamel, but when I lived in SF I was friends with Les. And I'm still here to say Les is more. Sorry bad pun for a magnificent human 💜
Tommy the Cat lyrics: Well, I remember as it were a meal ago... Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter, May have nestled its way into his mighty throat. Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down, The cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine. Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator. Tommy the cat had many a story to tell But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did... "She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit. The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the, Oldest of Tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days. The sight was beyond belief. Many a head snapped for double - even triple - takes as this vivacious, Feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway, Where the most virile of the young tabbies were known to hang out. They hung in droves. Such a multitude of masculinity could only be Found in one place... And that was O'Malley's Alley... The air was thick with cat calls, But not even a muscle in her neck did, twitch as she sauntered straight into the heart of the alleyway. She knew what she wanted... She was lookin' for that stud bull. She was looking for that THE cat. And that was me. Tommy the Cat is my name. And I say unto thee... 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?' (Break) 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?' 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say babababay?' 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?'" 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?'" 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?'" 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?... Say babyyyyyy!!!!???"
Jamel, if you want another exceptional weird band, I'd suggest They Might Be Giants. Primus is unique in its own way, They Might Be Giants has always been called a "College Band," because the only place they ever really got any airplay was on College Radio Stations. Well, and one episode of Tiny Toon Adventures where they were making fun of MTV.
PRIMUS HAVE ALWAYS REMIND ME OF THE RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS IN THEIR OWN BOTH WAY THEY HAVE FUNK MUSICALITY SIMILARLY THANKS PRIMO Day & JAMEL_AKA_JAMAL ✌🏼& LO💚E MY BROTHER
The first show I ever saw Primus at, was them opening for The Red Hot Chili Peppers! It was beyond legendary. I knew how lucky I was, but I sort of had no idea how lucky I was.
I remember reading a Guitar World Magazine interview with their guitarist Larry LaLonde...they asked How do you write a Primus guitar solo...he said Find out the key of the song and play anything that Is Not in that key lo!
Too bad you didn't go to Hartland highschool in Hartland MI from 1992-96, all we listened to was Primus! A lot of other bands too actually lol, but definitely LOTS of Primus 😁 Hartland is technically a village. It's amazing what you can find when you live in a village amongst dirt roads and cornfields...it's a whole new level of boredom you have to experience to understand lol. Somehow we managed to find Primus...we had some small towns around us with record stores and as soon as we got licenses we went straight there since that was where the culture was. While we loved our parents classic rock, we also loved hearing the new music of the day: Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, NOFX, Nirvana, etc. I can't even begin to list the new music coming out at that time that was and still is amazing...but I can tell you it was fun AF 😁😅👍😈😉 Lucky for us we had bigger cities like Detroit about an hour away where we could see great punk bands for cheap. It was awesome!!! Bigger venues like Vans Warped Tour came through cities like Pontiac too, again about 40 mins to an hour outside Hartland so we got to experience some fun shows during and after highschool. You can still catch catch some great punk shows in Detroit except all the bands I like are getting old with me lol...
Guitarist Larry LaLonde is another one, who like Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett (Metallica), and Alex Skolnick (Testament), took guitar lessons from Joe Satriani as a teen.
Fun fact: Primus is in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey in the battle of the bands playing this song. It's been on my playlist ever since (by that I mean mixed tape then burned CD and now actual playlist) :)
I LOVE Primus (even though they suck) and I LOVE Metallica. But I am so glad they didn't hire him. A collaboration song would be awesome but the styles do not mash up well.
Tommy Bolin: "Wild Dogs". My Personal favorite. Tommy Bolin: "Dreamer". If you Love Great Dynamics, listen to Tommy Bolin ""Dreamer". Everyone gets to show off a bit on "Post Toastee". And from his short stint with The James Gang Check out Tommy Bolin "Alexis". Try it, you'll like it!!
Les Claypool did a few songs with the Billy Strings band, and vice versa, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville last week... REALLY, REALLY cool. Go check it out.
Im sure someone already said this, but Les went to high school with Kirk Hammety from Metallica. Les was not a fit. He even said that. James Hetfield was not going to say Les Claypool couldn't be in the band. I will say they asked Claypool to play for whom the bells toll and he was not aware the open was on bass. He also showed up and wanted to play some weird shit. It was never a fit and everyone knew it Claypool Kirk and all them are all good buddies
Jamel it makes me so happy to see you getting Primus....they are very different but the 3 guys make some amazing music maybe not everyone's taste....great reaction Jamel❤❤ smile it's contagious😊😊
He was far too good for Metallica. He naturally can play over the level of skill it takes to play Metallica tunes, and that’s weird to say, but James had to know les wouldn’t be happy playing the bass lines Cliff and Jason wrote. Just not enough for his level ya know?
The bassist Les went to high school with Kirk, the guitarist for Metallica. Thats part of the reason why he auditioned for them. Les said in a later interview that Metallica was just being nice. Really they thought he was too weird lol.
*Yes, and we SUCK!* LOL I remember you watching Those Damn Blue-Collar Tweekers at Woodstock...you looked like you wished you were there. Not many more shows are more fun than a Primus show.
Jamel, it brings a smile to my face to see you grooving to some Primus. I don't recall seeing you react to them, but check out Les Claypool's Duo De Twang.
I saw Primus with Rush half or three-quarters of the crowd was hanging out somewhere other than in the arena watching Primus and I watched Primus and I thought they sucked. But as the years go by I realize what a phenomenal insane banned this is
I just went to see Primus love last week. They are playing A Farewell to Kings from Rush in it's entirety. Knowing what a fan of Rush and Les Claypool. I know you would love the show. And they are going to be back in Cali late June.
I was at a Primus concert in the 90s. They hadn't hit arenas yet. In the middle of this song, someone threw a shoe onto the stage. Without missing a line, Claypool interrupted the lyrics to say "Hey, buddy, don't be throwin no shoes up on the stage." In cadence with the song. It was priceless.
I think this is still my favourite Primus song. It's just so fun. I get what Jamel was saying about one member in a band outshining the others, too. Worst case I've seen of that in my life was in the late 90s with this band that must have been local (to Toronto) that was somewhere between grunge and alternative and they were not very good, but the drummer was great. It could have also been that the audience was slightly hostile as this band was a very odd fit to open up for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and Lords of Acid, but they should have done their damn best!
