What Charles is talking about in this scene is actually the crux of all the problems that follow. This is what he should have done from the beginning: ask for permission to marry Camilla at the very beginning of their relationship. And be much more consistent with it if he really loved her very much. It would have saved so much suffering for so many people. And yes, maybe Camilla would never be loved by people as much as Diana, but then again she wouldn't receive as much hate either. You can't blame others for not having enough courage to fight for your dreams.

Monarchy will get destroyed if they sway away from the traditionalism. British monarchy's strength is their strict adhere to rules. But I can't exactly expect people to be wise or strong when they are young, which neither of them was. All I can be thankful for is that at least someone in the next generation learned what not to do when it comes to fighting for who you actually love and didn't repeat the same cycle of mistakes. I've come to accept that they're not going anywhere and I don't have to like them because of my beliefs, but there's only so much energy you can give to hate before you grow sick of its adrenaline and the dopamine it brings doesn't work anymore. In the time since the Queen's passing, it's not *them* who are taking up the news screen time. Just like it wasn't the Queen who was on front page news in the 90s. But acceptance and forgiveness are a choice made by the one who judges. It's for their own piece of mind, not the King and Queen's. I've made my peace with what they did by accepting it. I think the Queen's look at 01:29 says it all. It's her realizing, very bregrudingly, that she made in error in judgment about Camilla 25 years earlier and that Camilla is the love of her son's life, and that perhaps Camilla provided the love, support and confidence to Charles that she never could, since monarchy came before motherhood. The late Queen made a massive mistake when she listened to her snobbish mother about Camilla; and her hypocrisy in continuing to champion Andrew PB when she knew of his serial adultery was breathtaking. In fact, the Queen Mother's influence on her eldest daughter was to the detriment of the monarchy far more than people realise. It was the QM who thought Diana would be suitable as a bride for Charles, even though she must have known about her deep-seated problems; worse still, after discovering just how impossible it was for women with an unstable background to settle into "the Firm", she still gave the green light to Sarah Ferguson, knowing that the long periods of separation involved in being married to a naval officer would be unsupportable for her without a strong family network behind her.

@@autumninthewoods4522 actually it was reported that Charles paused his affair with Camilla just after marrying Diana and that he only rekindled relations after Diana cheated on him first with her bodyguard. Diana also confirms this as she admitted in an interview that she cheated first in the marriage. And witness reports from people who worked with Charles and Diana actually said that Charles did a lot to try and please Diana from firing staff just because she didn't like them, distancing himself from his friends again just because she didn't like them, and to even getting rid of his long time dog just because Diana disliked pets. Apparently, Charles also tried to get Diana professional help for her bulima, but she would refuse. Eventually, Diana began cheating with her bodyguard and Charles, who had enough, rekindled his relationship with Camilla. Look, I am not defending Charles or his infidelity because he was far from the ideal husband, but to say that he didn't try to help Diana would be an overstatement. Diana herself, was also reported to be a difficult wife and she cheated on Charles with many men, including married men, which as a result broke several marriages. Again, I am not defending Charles, but if we are to look at the situation from a bigger picture, both sides of the marriage were unfaithful and just ultimately not a good match for each other. They had different likes and a huge age gap for one. When I first learned about the whole issue, I was quick to dislike Charles as well, but knowing what I know now, they really were just not suited for each other and to blame Charles solely for how the marriage ended would be an injustice.

If enough brats learned that they cannot have everything they want, this would be a more grown-up and responsible world. Most people learn that lesson many times in their life. I totally agree with the Queen's message in this scene that IF Camilla would have said NO to continuing their relationship while they both were married to their first spouses and put the same energy into making their marriages work as making a clandestine rendez-vous for a quickie they both could have saved their marriages. Charles asking the Queen to thank Camilla is beyond ridiculous. If Camilla truly wanted to protect The Crown, she would have backed out of the adulterous relationship to save the families from scandal. Isn't the King supposed to be head of the English Church? Isn't the royal family supposed to be the example of harmony to their public? Charles and Camilla have been nothing but. To Charles and Camilla it was and is still all about them. They didn't stop to think how breaking up their former marriages would damage their children and they didn't care. And yes, the royals did trick Diana by not telling her she would be a babymaker and not to expect any love or devotion from Charles and that he expected to have Camilla as his mistress permanently. Charles the King and Camilla the Queen.....what a farce!

@@JWRogersPS And yet, Charles would've been the same immoral, selfish individual no matter who ended up marrying him. The reality is that Charles was unwilling to put duty above his personal desires. As long as he didn't have Camilla - whom the Royal Family was NEVER going to let him have - then he was going to carry out the same affair no matter whom he ended up marrying in the end. He should've stepped aside, as his grand uncle did, if he wasn't up to the task of putting duty first, and insisted on pursuing a relationship with a married woman.
@anyaw340
@anyaw340 8 месяцев назад
@@JWRogersPS Also, it is the Royal Family who was in the wrong, not Diana. They snatched this very young, naïve, hopeful virgin out of her mundane, innocent life, and threw her into the very grown and harsh world of loveless marriages and affairs - and on the world stage, no less. Of course she wanted a fairytale - she was only 16 when she met Charles, and 20 when they married! How did they think it would work out - crushing a girl whose head is full of dreams and expectation at that tender age? She wasn't some old, worldly woman accustomed to major heartbreaks, disappointments, and scandal of the magnitude that she was forced to endure. And worse - Diana had more eyes on her than any other bride in history. She wasn't the first royal wife to deal with a cheating husband, but her shambolic marriage was more visible than any other marriage in history. The media was more advanced, ever-present, less deferential, more all-knowing, and more vicious than the media was in Queen Alexandra's time. Queen Alexandra was probably the last major royal wife to deal with major philandering by her husband - but it was without the incessant media coverage and visibility. Charles' affair was therefore FAR more visible and far more talked about than any other affair in history - making it all the more embarrassing and humiliating for Diana (who, again, is VERY young). The Royal Family reaped EXACTLY what they sowed with Diana. The correct thing to do would've been for the Royal Family to find an older, mature woman whom they knew would be experienced and emotionally strong enough to be content with the second life they KNEW Charles would be living as the world looked on.

Those of us who were around from the beginning saw it all unfold. Diana and Charles were diametric opposites, both terribly needy in their own ways. He was far too old for her and of a serious mind. She was young and frivolous. He was in love with another woman - she retaliated with many lovers of her own. There were so many unsavoury incidents reported. Neither were blameless and they plotted and press released against each other. It was not a pretty spectacle that unfolded day after day in the newspapers. ‘The War of the Wales’ was a daily newspaper event. Prince William was used by his mother to listen to her grief and stories he should never have had to hear at his age. It terminated in a Paris tunnel with a drunken driver. I admire Prince William so much for how he came through all this and is a wonderful husband, father King in the making.
@autumninthewoods4522
@autumninthewoods4522 8 месяцев назад
I was around then, too. First of all, Diana was 19-20. Most young people are going to be frivolous; it's in their nature. It's called immaturity. Second, she didn't "retaliate"; she was abandoned and tried to find love with others. What was she supposed to do, sit home and pine away forever for Charles? Third, we don't know how much William heard from his mother; it's all speculation and hearsay from others. Fourth, this series is a partly fictionalized retelling with many real events and politics added in. "The Crown" is NOT a documentary, nor did the news stations and tabloids entirely tell the truth in all aspects. Fifth, as far as an age gap, there was 13 years' difference between them. Many men marry wives much, much younger than that-decades younger-and their marriages endure because they most likely have the same interests and ideals. Charles and Diana were worlds apart in every way and had nothing in common. They made mistakes because no one is perfect. Charles may or may not have had a dialogue with his mother about Camilla. Had he been a real man of courage, he would've stood up to his family even if he'd had to do what Edward VIII did; abdicate. Instead, he went through with a sham marriage and put two women and himself through hell for decades. Had he done the right thing, Diana might still be alive and be happy with someone else, and Charles and Camilla could've been happily married for much longer than they have been.

And when the press described camilla as a villian or whore, homewrecking marraige breaker, slut shamed on the front pages of the paper. They believed it here we see the queen being on andrews side. It literally annoys me when people blame camilla and charles for breaking each others marriages. I adored Queen Elizabeth, however, she was largely at fault for Charles' infidelity. Yes, of course, Charles was the one who cheated. That's on him! However, he never actually wanted to marry Diana. He was marrying Diana to satisfy expectations of the monarchy. He loved Camilla. His marriage to Diana was doomed from the start. Yes, Charles and Camilla engaged in an adulterous affair...but where was the forgiveness for them that the Church preaches as essential? Countless millions of people have divorced over the decades of the last 100 years and few of them have faced the outrage faced by Charles and Camilla. Divorce is a private matter, and it should have been kept private. Charles and Diana didn't make vows to the world. They made vows to each other. Their divorce was no one else's business. Everyone painted Diana as a saint...but she was far from it. Yes, she was a good person at heart, and she did many good things...however, Diana was no saint. She, too, was an adulterer. Her trysts are well-documented. I have never understood the desire of people to hate Charles and Camilla. Regardless of what has happened, Charles is a good man who has lived his life in service to his country, and he has done a remarkable job. Charles is always dignified, always well-spoken, always upstanding, always loyal...always a great representative of the crown, and for the people. Many members of the public need to learn to show that man some respect and get over their childish need to hold a grudge that was never theirs to hold in the first place.

I believe he couldn't marry Camilla because she was divorced and already had a kid. The Queen (now King) is the head of the Church of England. Their "Pope". The irony is that the religion was started by a divorce.

Worst mistake Queen Elizabeth ever made allowing him to marry the adulterer, as her son was.

As she pointed out in another scene, of she did not grant permission, then Charles would ascend to the throne with a mistress instead of a consort, which would damage both the church and the crown far more. At his age she was not going to keep those two apart or arrange another marriage for him.

At this point, there was nothing else the Queen could really do. He produced an acceptable heir and Diana was dead for about 20 years at this point.

You don’t think ending your relationship with her when you married Diana was heroic. Burn😮 I know this a show based on actual events but if came to mother in an entitling way I just can’t 😒 it’s like he had no remorse and just selfish until he got what he wanted. I really hope he is not like for real.

I think Queen Elizabeth would have been more understanding if he hadn't tried to portray this as heroic, when it was 4 people (to include himself) behaving horribly.

So he should have done the decent thing and kept his groin away from camilla ... but decades later he was STILL bo..ing her - not again because their paths crossed. He helped to create the way Diana became and still luved most of his dream - no sympathy for him

Diana, lacked sincerity and commitment for the role of princess ( especially queen ). When Diana was 19 and got engaged she was still immature and when she married at 20 where was the national out cry back then? Her own mother and grandmother warned her about getting into the royal family because she was very unstable and yet she wouldn't listen. As time goes by Diana is not 20 anymore - grow up!! She took her married boyfriends to Kensington Palace and ruined many marriages. I feel bad for the innocent wives and children! Diana was a horrible person behind closed doors!! Diana should have been grateful that Buckingham Palace hid her craziness and stifled her shannigans daily!

Look this all happened because he did not have the grace to abdicate the throne for a woman that was clearly unfit no matter how much she put up with. He demanded to be king one way or another with the woman he loved more than his country by his side and he got it. Look where we are today. The future kings and family are totally a mess. No one respects Camilla and his last spineless acts were to demand it from people who would not give it and crown her..breaking the entire kingdom. It's a complete disgrace. He should have been passed over.

Abdication isn’t a simple resignation. It is a shame. It’s like kicking off the duty towards country and the Crown. After Edward VIII’s abdication, this word is a taboo for the RF. It’s not only in Charles’ hands to abdicate. The abdication has to be accepted by the Parliament of 15 nations he is monarch. Edward VIII didn’t abdicate by his own will. He was forced to abdicate by the parliament bcz of multiple reasons. Most important reason was his over-friendliness with that Austrian painter. Besides, the woman he chose was a thrice divorced woman; and on top of that, she was known to be a whore of Nazis who was passing important state documents from King’s red box to her Nazi lovers. People would have set fire on Buckingham Palace if that woman had been crowned as Queen.
