This is not the prodigal son story. The prodigal son asked for his inheritance in advance of his father’s passing to seek his fortune. His father granted his request. American here. This discussion ignores the most obvious reason Harry won't apply to become a US citizen: he would be required to renounce his royal & aristocratic titles. That's one of the rules of our naturalization process, and it's not flexible. He could challenge that rule in court. (Short version: Birthright Americans are allowed to have a royal/aristocratic title due to marrying into foreign nobility or being born to an American and a foreign noble (ex. Harry's wife and children). So the immigration rule treats naturalized citizens differently, and some pundits think the rule may not be Constitutional.) It should be noted, though, that challenging such a rule would take years and be very expensive, AND it would certainly not improve the Sussexes public image in America for Harry to try to insist on becoming an American BUT keeping his royal titles in our non-monarchial (one might realistically say anti-monarchial) nation.Harry is married to an American and his children (due to their mother) are American. He can live here the rest of his life without becoming a citizen. Would he really either renounce his titles or go through a very long, contentious, unpopular, and VERY expensive court battle--for which the outcome is not at all certain- in an effort to keep those titles upon becoming a citizen?
