If i remember correctly they recorded this in Rotterdam in the netherlands and he wasn't satisfied and then redid it at Paisley Park and it was then rimixed because of crowd noise. It's on wiki for sure. It's live but there's parts of the Rotterdam show still in it, foootage wise.
Exactly what I was going to say. Yes, original footage from the Ahoy in Rotterdam, but additional footage comes from Paisley Park as he didn't like the Ahoy footage, so the concert movie pieces multiple performances together. There are many moments in the film when the audio and video aren't synced at all. It's disappointing they didn't do a better job synching up the audio and video when the film was first put together way back when. So you were correct, Bryan.

This is a real education in watching someone go down the rabbithole. For decades this was one of THE most cherished Prince guitar peformance because there were so few live performances officially available to us - and he had YT on lockdown. Seeing YYCPG witness this following countless pristine HD performances from across all the eras and be - let's be honest here - underwhelmed... That's telling. The lesson I've been learning is that the route into Prince that we all shared in real-time is not the same route new fans will take. We got it piece-meal and as it arrived, they get it all as a buffet table. Excellent reaction because it forces us to reassess where exactly should the focus of Prince be nowadays. If you had just one chance to make a first impression on someone, what clip would it be?
I remember being disappointed with the lack of guitar brilliance on Around The World In A Day and Parade. This was his way of saying, hey I'm back with the axe!
Well said referenced to the "buffet table". 😄 My first imoression would be the whole "Lovesexy Dortmund-concert-video". This Concert reflects all aspects of why I love this little guy so much. His musicality, his creativity, the arrangements of the songs, his versatility, his voice, his guitar playing, his look and fashion, his coolness, his sexyness, the interaction with the audience and above all his immense power. I'm grateful that we were able to see him and I'm so proud to be a fan. 😊
Great question..has me stumped. I think it depends on the person I'm trying to impress (their musical preference)...some are into rock, rnb, slow jams, piano, guitar, etc. I would for sure say a live clip, to demonstrate his showmanship...but I'm still stumped!! lol
I've replied to others, and many have noted this info, but here's the complete breakdown of shooting per princevault: Initial filming was done on 26, 27 and 28 June 1987 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. On 29 June more footage was filmed in Antwerp, Belgium. Videofootage recorded in Paris on 16 June 1987 was also used. Most of the visuals used in the film however, were shot over six days, starting 18 July 1987, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, MN, mostly lip syncing to material originally recorded in Rotterdam on at least the last day, (23 July 1987, but maybe also on the other days) new audio was also recorded in front of an audience of around 100 extras.
The audio was recorded in Rotterdam from the Sign O The Times Tour but the footage was too grainy to be used for a movie so they re shot it on the brand new sound stage at Paisley Park. Except for the breakdown which is partly the original footage from the Rotterdam concert

Great HBD tribute!! You were spot on, this was a concert 'video' and the music was recorded live elsewhere. The lyrics you read out appear to be from the original version of this song from '79 that they recently found in the vault....the song takes a different approach in parts as he appears to be pleading rather than passing the lady in question by!
Another great reaction Bryan! That was an amazing version of Happy Birthday you did! Prince would've loved that! You are correct about his playing being out of sync. The audio was recorded at a concert in Europe and the video was re-recorded at his soundstage at Paisley Park. I can't believe that performance was at his house! Crazy! Also, to answer your question, I definitely think that it is possible to have a male or female friend that is strictly platonic. Growing up, I had many platonic friends that were boys and I still have a few that I have kept in touch with that I see on a regular basis. Also, I completely agree with Prince being a wordsmith! I’m just leaving Minneapolis from attending this years Celebration and when that song was played at a few parties it definitely sounded as fresh as it did when the SOTT concert film came out ‼️💜🤘🏾
So first off, best version of Happy Birthday EVER. You took my least favorite song on the planet and turned it into something badass, so well done Bryan! 😂 There was definitely some overdubbing at work in the SOTT concert film. Prince wasn’t happy with the sound quality at the live show and with some of the footage so it’s intercut with some stuff that was done later at Paisley, both audio and visuals. It’s reasonably seamless but a trained eye or ear can pick it up. All that said, this is such a terrific version of this song. The solo makes me misty-eyed every time, it just soars. If you thought THIS was an overload check out It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night from this same movie. That is maybe the craziest 10 minute of performing imaginable. Dude does it ALL. @@YesYouCANPlayGuitar The whole"Sign ☮ The Times" film (only released as a film in the US, published as a VHS video worldwide) was edited to suit a storyline, but it was mainly based on four live performances. It won an award on a French musical film festival in 1988. You can more clearly see the cinematic input on the "You got the look" video.
I think you were right to call out the sync issue with Prince’s guitar. There are many moments in the movie where you can tell it’s been overdubbed in post. Some of it was re-shot at Paisley P. and matched with the original live shows. Two original gigs cut together with footage from Paisley plus overdubs.
Alright now , and yes! You can play guitar! I absolutely loved your rendition of Happy Birthday to " His Royal Badness " , he would have loved it......Thank U so much for that....it bought a smile to my face.
This is a section of a movie. Parts were later overdubbed in post. That may be why you, as a pro, feel like something is "off", but, a very clear clean version of this video will show you it is 100% spot on.

The great thing about that particular guitar solo is that it’s performed the same exact way on the album. When you realise he wrote and produced this song and arranged it. He taught his band their individual parts and then rehearsed to the point it all looks so easy. He and his guitar are one, throwing it and himself around all over the stage. It is so nice to share with the like minded. When I got married (51 years ago) my record collection was substantial, as music was very important to my family. Everyone in the family played an instrument. My dear husband’s record collection, had two singles. “ Little boy lost” and “ El Paso”. It is pitiful I know but he was Dux every year at College, as if that makes up for it. I am threatening to get myself a baby blue Bentley but how is that going, that is going down like a lead balloon. Still, he knows I would if I wanted to and that keeps the subject interesting. Chuckle!
They had filmed a full concert in Rotterdam but later they realised the close up footage from that concert wasn’t great so they re-recorded it at Paisley Park with him miming to the Rotterdam show’s audio. If that makes sense? So yes you can see that he’s miming a lot of the time, but he’s miming to his own performance.
I love the SOTT (Sign O The Times) concert movie. I definitely prefer Forever In My Life and Gonna Be a Beautiful Night from the concert vs the album versions. A lot cooler version of Forever in my life and the faster tempo makes all the difference in Beautiful Night. I've got an old VHS dub of SOTT and made tape and later mp3 of those versions from the vhs. I just received my Purple Rain Live from Syracuse the other, so I've been relishing the official concert footage a lot lately, both Purple Rain and SOTT. Maybe someday they'll put out a good remaster of Lovesexy, too.

Love the guitar intro. If u watch sign o the time movie and live sexy 88 germany, both feature the shame band, a lot of horns used. "I could never take the place. . " was written in about 1980, in the dirty mind era. You ll hear the shame theme musically in "when u were mine" and " I could never...." At the end when the horns come back in, t get do the same part in "blues in g" on love sexy 88 show. Probably 15% of the stuff prince does is recycled.

Some things were dubbed here and there. Prince dubbed some of the guitar in studio after the show. Wish he hadn't dubbed it, but he wanted a music video ish concert movie. it still looks and sounds awesome
Two songs worth looking at for Prince’s performance, are Cream and Electric Chair. Pardon me if you have already done them but I couldn’t find that fact.
It was a movie in the theater and it was dubbed afterwards for some reason. Some of it is the actual performance and some has been edited in the studio. I don't know why he did that because there is a full live concert he did at 1st Avenue for this album that is raw and way better. I guess he thought "If people are going to the theater to watch it I should try to make the sound perfect" He made the movie because he didn't tour this album in north America. Still a great song though.
This is a nice song, it has a nice fun rhythm, this is the concert with the best version of the cross I’ve ever heard I don’t really really like the other video/version of that song he just sings it better
I have seen this many times also wonder if it’s actually live ..I know the songs are live the audio …but appears out of sync at times with video so have always wondered if the video was re enacted . Prince rarely lip synced only found a small handful where he did it . This SOTT always made me wonder though.
Good eye. The footage they shot in Europe didn't have the greatest video quality yet the audio was fine. So they set the stage up at Paisley Park and re-enacted the concert to the audio.
The long shots were recorded in Rotterdam with the close being shot later in Paisley Park. The audio is from the show but dubs were added later and so the close ups of Prince bon guitar is him miming, and he was never the best mime. There is a clip from the World Music Awards where he mimed to The Most Beautiful Girl In The World..... he forgot lyrics, it was dire. So the scene from the Sign O The Times is a movie, the movies are just made from little parts lined up to sell a story/scene.

Brian, I was mistaken. The original was from 1979 but the only version I know of is the studio version from the Sign of the Times deluxe release from a few years ago. It has a slightly grittier sound, like it could have been on his Dirty Mind album.

When Prince said "she was looking alright" he was being condescending because she had to be gorgeous for him to even notice her. But if you know Prince you know he couldn't tell her that right? So even in his lyrics he is projecting coolness and saying I'm out of your league:) ....Would love to know what you and your members think.
It's out of sync everywhere because it's studio music dubbed over live performances, so prince tried to match in the studio what the video portrayed to overdub it all and to give superior sound. He would've enhanced solos in the takes in the studio. It was never hidden that this was done, but as 99.99% of viewers are not guitar players, we barely notice,if at all, that things don't match up an awful lot. I actually had a double vinyl bootleg of a live arena performance on this tour, and the musicality was great as you'd expect from him, but it wasn't stunning like we have here. 👍

Oooh! WRONG LYRICS! Those are the lyrics to his original demo. The final lyrics are more refined and make a little more sense as a coherent through line.
Strange isn't it? You could see the details said Sign O The Times version 1987. The scraper picking up the wrong version... Which given the recency of the demo version, you'd imagine there aren't many sites with those lyrics.
