I remember Prince saying something to the effect of: in a world of black and white, Led Zeppelin played songs in color. No better compliment could be made than having The Purple One say that.

Ahhhh, he wasn’t that good. Everyone had plenty of years to hear exactly how good he was. This video is a perfect example. Yes, professional level and high quality. Also, very derivative, meandering, unfocused, repetitive and Strictly forgettable. Nothing special, or even particularly memorable. Prince certainly got his due as a musician, and then some. Could you tell this was Prince, if you didn’t know it already? No it sounds exactly like 10,000 other guitar players who also could play generic riffs like these for hours on end in their sleep. Prince’s songwriting and personality put him where he was. At the pro level, he was a very mediocre, if competent, guitarist.
@hkpr-ro6ui
@hkpr-ro6ui 3 года назад
The worst cover of WLL ever. And a meandering, pointless solo, predictably pentatonic. Anyone who plays guitar knows this was forgettable and average.
@dougcameron6609
@dougcameron6609 3 года назад
@@hkpr-ro6ui I know, and the dead giveaway is all the effects. Relies entirely on them for the flavor Super processed sound to make the stock licks sound cool. Now he IS pretty fluid - his gift showing through here - but it’s just major showmanship, really, more than anything related to his playing. I’m not trying to put the guy down. He was a major talent
@hkpr-ro6ui
@hkpr-ro6ui 3 года назад
@@dougcameron6609 He was good but people comparing him to Hendrix or van Halen is absurd. He was indeed, in the main, a showman. He let himself down with all the effort he put into manufacturing his myth. The "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" performance at the 2004 Hall of Fame is a classic case: he claimed on his tour bus that he didn't know the Beatles Sgt Pepper album when it got played and his band members and crew were stunned that he didn't know it; he was invited to play the 2004 televised performance months before and was told which track; he claimed he'd never heard WMGGW before, despite him playing and performing several Beatles songs; he played low key in the rehearsals; then acted as though he spontaneously made up his solo on the spot although it contains motifs from the original. The truth is that it's inconceivable that he didn't know WMGGW just as he knew Whole Lotta Love; he practised like hell before the performance; this was his chance to out-perform Clapton who played on the original; he feigned disinterest in the rehearsal; he made the most of making an impact when it was televised; his security were on hand at exactly the right time to help with his planned fall back into the audience. It was all staged.

you might enjoy that led zeppelin promoted their first Los Angeles performance, at a converted warehouse out in Pasadena by sliding flyers advertising the show through the vents in the door of our aviation high school lockers. A pink strip of paper with a line drawing of a rose, because it was being held at the rose palace, the name of the band and concert time. everybody in the hallway was puzzled because it was going to be a concert with just one band nobody had ever heard of. I went to a beatlemanic I knew in school , who because he subscribed to a bunch of English fan newspapers, said he ha heard of them and they were supposed to be pretty good. The show made for good memories.

I've been there for them all, all the "guitar gods" throughout the rock era, from Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley and Jimi Hendrix, to SRV and EVH, and everyone in between. But that moment at 2:34 when he stopped the solo and walked off with that pure Prince swagger, that's the moment when I jumped out of my chair and started screaming. "Oh my God, what did I just hear?! Are you kidding me?!" That was fricking otherworldy. I think Jimi himself would be proud of this guy.

Things to take from this: Prince knew the song, deeply; knew how it was performed live by Led Zep, and how Jimmy Page worked the guitar, deeply; knew the ins and outs of it, knew the things to keep and the things to draw from and the things where there was space. And that's true every time -- every time -- he takes on another person's song, whether it's Joni or Dave Grohl or whatever. He knows that song as close as can you can get to the person who wrote it. This is my favorite song...by my favorite band...whose guitarist is the one responsible for me becoming a guitar player....as for Prince...although he may not be my favorite artist...he ranks high, but even higher is my respect for his unbelievably raw talent...I have never seen any individual who is both immeasurablevin STYLE and SUBSTANCE.....if Midas' touch was Gold...his was a mix of platinum and diamond..... And then he turned them purple...!

Jimmy J Yea maybe, but then again how many hundreds of covers of their song has been done..? Many many famous bands have covered their songs, so I’m guessing there’s only so much they can “Love”, such as Alien Ant Farm covered and released their tribute to MJ’s Smooth Criminal, sounded and played very well just heavier in sound due to type of band and the tempo was slightly increased.... I’m sure MJ would’ve “LOVED” that too.....

The song was actually written by Willie Dixon and recorded originally by Muddy Waters under the title 'You Need Love'. Willie Dixon sued Led Zeppelin for claiming credit for his song, and he won. Check out Muddy Waters' version by searching youtube for 'you need love muddy waters'. Incidentally, all of the above applies to 'Killing Floor' which is also from LZ's second album and also was written by Willie Dixon (but originally recorded by Howlin' Wolf).

Clapton thought Prince was the best guitarist out there when he was asked, quiet as it was kept. I laughed when my buddy told me that in 88 when Prince was in Toronto. So we went - I was blown away at what I saw that night. It was ridiculous what I saw that night....not like this - this was psychedic guitar reinvented. He blew away a stage full of the best guitarists assembled one night at the RnR HOF induction night - they did "My guutar gently weeps," so everyone got a turn. Prince came in an wrapped it all up. If you didn't how good he was, it was always wild to see folks reaction to his skills. He was the Hendrix and Miles Davis level talent of his day.

Prince always was underestimated as a guitarist just because most of his music is not guitar centered. He proved time and time again that he could play several instruments more than well. He was also known for his exceptionally well-trained hearing. Yet, I'm surprised with how much distortion he plays the intro to this cover. Sad this little musical genius died much too early.
