'Princess Diana’s Wedding Dress Goes on Display for the First Time in 25 Years'
Princess Diana’s wedding dress has gone on display for the first time in 25 years at Kensington Palace.
The iconic gown is one of the many looks featured in the “Royal Style in the Making” exhibition along with other items worn by the Queen, Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, and more Lady Di pieces.
The exhibition takes a look at the relationship between fashion designers and their royal clients. The gorgeous dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel for her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Diana’s dress was loaned to the exhibition by her sons Prince William and Harry ahead of what would be her 60th birthday on July 1st. The exhibition will be open to the public from June 3rd until January 2022.

I first saw this dress on display at Althorp House in 1998 along with her other dresses hats shoes and childhood belongings. The dress is lovely , the train is beautiful. The exhibition was done with respect . There will never be another Diana ❤

I, too, saw this dress at Althorp House. Once I saw it, it was far more beautiful than it appeared to be on TV. The lace, the pearl and crystal sequins were stunning. The train was magnificent. One has to see it in person to in any way understand just how gorgeous it is. Her shoes were hand painted on the sole. Wow. A day I will never forget. A gorgeous gown for a beautiful princess...💕

@@hlondon2408 Yes i agree with everything you say, i know some say it was too much material etc but it was the 80's fashion and when you see it up close it really is stunning and i know it creased but it was silk and it only just fit into the carriage, Diana herself laughed about that after as no one had thought of that senario. Yes the shoes were so pretty too , i think the way they displayed her dresses at Althorp was so good as you could get really close and see all the detailing, yes they were all behind glass but clearly seen. I think the most touching were the ballet shoes all worn and a little tatty, she so wanted to be a ballet dancer but grew to tall, all her dreams were in those shoes.💐

@@Sunflower-wq6re I loved reading your post. Your descriptions matched what I saw. Yes, her dress was definitely 1980's fashion. Many brides chose that look. I remember thinking when she stepped out of that coach how overly enormous it was for her and all those wrinkles distracted from her look. But, as she walked down that long aisle in St. Paul's Cathedral, the dress fit into all that space. Once I saw it in person, only then could I see the incredible details which made the dress all that it was. I had a totally different impression of it. It is a one of a kind, but most importantly, it clearly represented her innocence at that time. She wanted to look like a Princess and indeed she did. 💐 💕 💐

My Mum and I queued for hours in the Mall to see Diana’s dress and the wedding presents on display at St James’ Palace. We had travelled from North Wales and were worried that we wouldn’t get in. Fortunately for us at least we were lucky enough to be among the last visitors allowed in that day and people queuing a bit further down were turned away. We felt sorry for them but hugely relieved that we got in. The dress, her shoes and the beautiful parasol the Emmanuel’s had made were there too as well the bridesmaids dresses and page boys outfits. We loved the wedding presents, especially the beautiful sapphire suite. It was also great to be able see inside St. James’ Palace as it isn’t normally open to the public. It was a very memorable day.

I was in London right after the wedding, when it was on display with wedding gifts from all over the world. I remember we tried a couple of times to get in and the wait was 4 to 5 hours. So one day we got there really early to be one of the first in line. It was an amazing experience and an amazing time to be in London!

@@LINJ638 I don’t think ever. It may have been on display while, Diana was alive at Buckingham Palace, I vaguely remember but could be wrong. I need to check. It seems that each generation in succession must be exposed to, Princess Diana, it seems mandatory. 😂 LOL.

I agree. She was young, tall and beautiful with a perfect figure. That dress was too much, it swamped her. I'm sure it's beautiful on display but not on camera where it looked wrinkled before she even set off down the aisle.

I thought the dress was hideous. She was overtaken by all the poofyness and it swamped her. She was beautiful and fresh and this dress made her look frumpy and matronly. Ick. And I got up at 4 am to watch the wedding live.

When seen in person, only then can you see and appreciate its full magnificence. It is truly unique as it is filled with pearls and crystal beading which were not seen on television. If you will be in London this summer, go to Kensington Palace and see it.

I remember that I hadn't long joined BT & they had given us the day off work. It was so sunny we had to draw the front room curtains, so we could see it on the t.v. without any glare. Sandwiches and Drinks on the go. A happy day.

I agree with you. The lace on her dress was beautiful but there was too much of everything all at once imo. The enormous Victorian leg o' mutton type sleeves and ruffled taffeta neckline under the lace. Just the lace would have been adequate. The strange extremely long train just sewn into the waistline of a ballgown skirt. Imo both Diana and the designers were too inexperienced. She kept losing weight and the dress was taken in until it looked out of proportion. Sarah's wedding dress was very flattering apart from the bows on the shoulders. She and her daughters have all had beautiful wedding dresses.

Actually, it was on display along with other clothes of hers. Here in KC the same weekend Prince William got married. My friends and I went to see the exhibit, then stayed in a hotel. We got up at 0200 to watch the festivities.

Being the 80’s the puff sleeve was very fashionable, well into the 90’s. I think just after 2000 the more sleek dresses came in. So although I do not think the dress was flattering at all for Diana, it was the times for that sort of design.

@@aerialpyropewpew it was puff sleeve for wedding dresses. Shoulder pads were in, in general. Not for wedding dresses. Puff sleeves were also fashionable on normal clothing. I remember my mum used to wear dresses with a puff sleeve in the 80’s growing up. Obviously not on the scale on the bridal dress Diana wore.

Everyone raved over that dress, but looking back it was awful. It made her look like the child bride she was. The train was symbolic of the baggage she was forced to drag around. No wonder she pushed back against the establishment as she did. They treated her so poorly.
