*** News as of 7/1/2024 ***
We decided to get a bigger boat to better share our cruises with family and friends. MV Emerson is for sale in La Conner, WA. Check www.mvemerson.com for details. The price will be $320,000 USD once listed via a brokerage. Contact us at: cents_rounds.00@icloud.com with serious inquiries or questions about pre-brokerage pricing. We will continue to gently use Emerson until sold.

Please note: We use this channel to share our experiences in boating, snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, etc. so we may stay connected to family and friends across many time zones. Some of our videos include our learning experiences and we share those so others may benefit. We are also always open to your wisdom. We are NOT trying to "build a channel" or an online business. When we mention products we like, we do so without compensation or sponsorship.
We cruised from Everett, WA to Princess Louisa Inlet in British Columbia, Canada Sept 14 - 22, 2022 in our Ranger Tugs R-29CB. This video shows each day of our journey. We tried to balance views of stunning nature and things we thought might be interesting to boaters, such as our routing and chart tribulation.
00:00 - Intro
00:12 - Map - Animated Overview
00:32 - Everett to Friday Harbor
02:05 - Friday Harbor to Ganges
03:47 - Ganges to Silva Bay, Gabriola
06:14 - Gabriola to Chatterbox Falls, Princess Louisa Inlet
08:07 - Princess Louis Inlet
10:19 - Princess Louisa Inlet to Secret Cove
14:12 - Secret Cove to Ganges
16:00 - Ganges to Cap Sante, Anacortes, WA
17:39 - Anacortes to Everett
For every R-29CB detail we could think of, we recommend that you download the “The Unofficial R-29 User Guide” from the homepage of www.outwestrider.com. Always free and hopefully always improving. No forms to fill out, no mailing list to join. No data collected.
We have been asked to share how we plan our cruises. It makes for a dry video, so we broke it up:
- Initial Route - Anchoring in 25 kts gusts with our Ranger Tug R-29
- Currents & Tides - Possibly May 2023
- Wind & Weather - Possible June 2023
- Buoys & Coast Guard - Possibly June 2023
- Contingency Plans - Possibly in July 2023

Just happened on your channel and am very impressed by your brevity and superb photo quality. I'm 86, snuggled comfortably in my Texas home, but were it not for my "responsibilities" I would finish up my days following in your footsteps.

Cool to see the Salish Dawn in the video, a Seahorse 52 in Friday Harbor. We chartered her this last summer ⚓️

I wish there was a video of the 3 friends who took their Ranger Tugs 21ec's from Seattle to Haines, AK

Nice trip... we've been to Alaska twice. Sitka the first time and Cordova the 2nd but haven't gotten to Princess Louisa yet...but it's on the list....

Visuals are spectacular! Just saw the 31ft model of your tug. Think that would be much more appropriate for your new lifestyle. There is so much more room and a shower. Eyes and glass around the aft area would add another living area and range of conditions you could be comfortable in. Just a thought.

Thanks a bunch. We actually like the 29 better. Fortunately there are many choices and styles. I will admit that if the 31 had a wider beam than the 29, we might think differently.

Great video. On an R-29, I stand on the driver's seat and do the flag through the hatch above. No need to go out :)

Even better. Great tip. Thanks! We ended up rerouting the line to the hand rail, just so we can get to it. I'll see if the admiral allows it. ;-)

One of the most Beautiful trips I’ve seen! I wonder are there charters for that area. I live in Tennessee and we have hills called the Smokie Mtns. But having mountains and ocean together is Awesome ! Being photographer I’d love that chance of getting those shots.

Thanks James. Yes there are. To my understanding, you can charter a boat in Vancouver, Nanaimo, and Comox (possibly others) and people do that to reach Princess Louisa. There are also float plane tours from a number of locations and there are smaller, faster charters doing one-day trips from Egmont, BC. There could be other sources that I am not aware of. Perhaps others can chime in.

should take a run over to bahamas at some point. there's a ranger tug 25 over there now.

That would be fun and a point in favor of trailering these boats. Maybe in a few years.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. Curious to know what software you use to edit. I'd like to add the moving lines on the map and the captions to some of my videos.

Thanks. I appreciate your comments. I use Apple Motion for the map in conjunction with Final Cut Pro for overall editing. Motion produces small video files, so you could import them into any video editing software. Mario Orsini of "2 Wheeled Rider" turned me on to the tool and posted a video on how to use it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L062kwLuVbI.html

To add: Unlike Mario in his video, I use Apple Maps for the underlying maps and I smooth out the Bezier route lines by setting Roundness in Basic Geometry to 10. Commentary is typically a title that I add in FCPX.

@@mvemerson Thanks for the quick response and the useful link. Ranger took a ppt presentation on my 2021 trip to Alaska and made it into a video for their webinar series and although I think it turned out well, it would have been better if I had more video footage and animation similar to what you've done here as the static images are not as lively. I took more videos on my 2022 trip and showed them at the rendezvous in 2022 which was an improvement but I would like to get more skills in the annotation part. Thanks again, bob

@@boborca Since you mention static images, I also took some pointers from Tony Fleming (great Alaska videos). He explained his liberal use of the Ken Burns effect to add movement. Another great source is an amazing video produced by the son of the My Serenade crew ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8wYknC0ljiI.html. RU-vid is a great learning tool. 🙂

What is your typical cruise speed please?
@mvemerson
@mvemerson Год назад
Our fuel economy has a sweet spot around ~2.7 mpg, which will be around 6-8 kt. For planning purposes I use 7.2 knots. Our "fast cruise" is at 3,250 rpm (90% of load) and is between 15 and 19 knots, depending on currents. We almost always use "fast cruise" when we cross larger bodies of water, like the Strait of Georgia, that have the potential to get "spicy" quickly.
@edvanloon
@edvanloon Год назад
In NZ you should go faster than 5 knots within 100m of another vessel. That guys shooting past you guys is in my humble opinion an idiot
@mvemerson
@mvemerson Год назад
I very much agree. Our USCG rules are a bit ambiguous and demand that the passing vessel passes safely with minimal wake. That pass, in a narrow channel, in my opinion was not safe. In my experience and in our cruising area, most recreational boaters are very respectful and safe. Most issues I have encountered were with commercial boaters. Whale watching boats, commercial crab fishermen, etc. I was told that this particular boat was the "project boat" of someone with a commercial dock in La Conner, WA. The boat returned shortly after leaving the channel and it looked to us like a test run.
