They wanted us not to like my girl Rhaenys but she was just giving her the real like only a woman could.
@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ

I don't think that was the point of this scene. The music and the way it is shot is sad. I feel Rhaenys here felt resentful that her inheritance was stolen. She was the daughter of Aemon Targaryen, Jaehaerys' eldest son. She should've been The Queen of Westeros. But she was overlooked, for being a woman. Her younger cousin, Viserys, was chosen. I imagine that must have stung. Rhaenys here is also trying to marry Laena to Viserys, because if that had happened, they would've had a boy or a girl, and so, it wouldn't be the Hightowers versus Rhaenyra. It would've been Rhaenyra and Daemon versus her Velaryon half-brother. Rhaenys I guess is seething because this girl, who's the daughter of a usurper, is about to have what she should've. And now Viserys wants to play the doting father with his daughter, when he's a hypocrite because Rhaenys was overlooked in his favour. Viserys wants to get away with crowning Rhaenyra as his heiress, when he didn't allow Rhaenys that kindness. A lot of that rage is directed towards Rhaenyra, the daughter of the usurper, the spoiled, the one who could get away with what she couldn't. I can see why Rhaenys would realistically be angry at Rhaenyra (and Viserys).

@@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ There is a gian difference between Rhaenys and Rhaenyra. Which is that the king has declared that one of them is his heiress, while the other had no such back up. Jahearys I never did that, he instead let his council decide instead of him. And because he was typical of his time (therefore, misogyne), it was probably to his liking. Viserys's love for Rhaenyra (and his guilt towards his wife and her mother) made him have much more feminist ideals, and he declared for Rhaenyra during his reign, which should have been an absolute order to any lawful lords that bent their knees for her.
@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ
@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ Месяц назад
@@tanez778 I think Jaehaerys didn't precisely let his council decide. In the book, he outright ignores Rhaenys in favour of her uncle, Baelon (Viserys' and Daemon's father). It is only after Baelon's demise that he calls upon the Great Council, probably as a show to give more legitimacy to his mistake. In the book, the two greatest contenders are not Rhaenys and Viserys, but Laenor and Viserys. So I'd say it's even worse, because Laenor's claim derives from his mother, Rhaenys. But she's overlooked while a literal 6 years old child is taken into account simply because he's male and she's a female. Insane. Unjust. Even worse. At least in the show, they consider her.

I think Rhaenyra was being a 'brat' in this scene and many of the scenes of her youth (the royal progress/finding a spouse journey), but part of me understands that's due to her being young. She was also indulged, it seems like. While she was the oldest surviving child of the king and his first queen, still, they were hoping for a male heir...then when it's come time for her to be announced as heir, she's already had that 'insolence' which is very much of a family trait lol and bratty. Like most monarchs, she probably has that inflated ego and as a dragon rider, that ego must be through the roof. The Targaryens seem to always refer to Aegon the Conqueror, so yup, despite being the 'incorrect gender,' she probably has the same ego as a Targaryen man. I was actually surprised she "mellowed out" quite a bit as adult Rhaenyra (or after becoming a mother).

@@user-jr9bu7em8s I don't understand why he wouldn't name Daemon his heir, the likelihood is he thinks Daemon is 'war hungry' and would plunge the realm into war with the free cities, etc if there's no big issues. It's been 70 something years of peace at that point and Viserys didn't want that to happen. Since he has remarried and had sons with his second wife, I hate to say this, but Otto actually had a point. To betroth Aegon to Rhaenyra, the issue is their age difference though. Rhaenys was being pragmatic, yes. She was aware of the problems in Westeros. She chose not to fight it and that’s okay, but given what she ended up doing, it was clear that she didn’t really believe in what she was saying. Rather, she was being “WOKE” and that means aware of how things currently are. She clearly didn’t like it and when there was an opportunity to fight it, she took it.
@heatherwaetzig2633

Exactly, this is a great way to look at it. Rhaenys is the oldest, wisest Targaryen of her generation. I see her as the new Maester Aemon not so much Lady Olenna or Catelyn Stark. They were more ambitious than her. Rhaenys in the show at least is upset she was passed over for the Throne and not given a chance to rule but she seems to be okay with not having been given it. Maybe because she realizes what a huge burden it is. She didn't press her claim or her children's claims because she saw she didn't have the support she needed. Her actions after this are motivated by a strong sense of duty and honor. As well as love for her family. Rhaenys didn't want a Civil War to break out over her claim but ultimately chose to support Rhaenyra because she believed she'd be the better ruler and she supports her cousin Viserys' wishes. Very similar to Maester Aemon who went to the Night's Watch for the same reasons. I only wish The Queen Who Never Was would have mentored The Realm's Delight more. Like Aemon did with Jon Snow. Rhaenyra needs her and fails to see this.

There were two ways for rhaenyra to have avoided a succession struggle. 1. Marry her half brother Aegon which is the easiest route. 2. Marry someone from a noble house from Dorne, by doing this not only would rhaenyra have brought Dorne into the realm but she would have done so peacefully something that Aegon the conqueror not only failed to do but he also lost one of his dragons (Meraxes) to them, in fact it was through marriage that Dorne joined the realm at all. Had rhaenyra done this it would have established herself as a capable ruler and politically competent and if anyone still had doubts about her capabilities all she would have to do is remind that she peacefully brought Dorne into the realm something Aegon the conqueror failed to do.
@adaroez
@adaroez Месяц назад
Marrying someone from Dorne, especially a Martell would even weaken her cause more. The Dornish were hated by the people of the Stormlands and the Reach. Just look at how much trouble King Daeron II had with his dornish marriage, the realm tore itself apart, because some lords thought that the court was too full of dornishmen and women and that the heir of the iron throne looked too dornish, that's what helped Daemon Blackfyres cause more at the end. And you have to consider that during Rhaenyras life, it's not a long time ago, that the Dornish attacked the realm several times under Jahaerys era. The Baratheons and Tyrells would feel personally insulted, as they lost several familiy members to the Dornish. And without the support of House Velaryon, Rhaenyra would have lost many of her advantages, including dragonriders, the wealth of House Velaryon, as well as their fleet. The dornish were weak and never really capable to fight successfully outside of their territory. She should have married Laenor and after his death someone from House Lannister (Tyland Lannister, a council member an twin brother to the current head of house Targaryen) and thus strengthen her cause more by having the Westermen as her allies. Then she should have betrothed her two eldest sons to Daemons daughter, to bind him and the Velaryons more to her side and marry off Joffrey to one of the Baratheon girls, too secure the alliance with House Baratheon. At last she should offer one of her children from her second husband to Aegon II as a sign of peace. (I guess she would still get pregnant several times in her second marriage with a Lannister). Even if Alicent rejected this offer, it would be harder this time, with the many allies Rhaenyra would have. Like House Arryn, Baratheon, Lannister, Velaryon, etc. More than half of the realm would side with her.
@animewired

I'm not denying that it would be risky for rhaenyra to marry someone from Dorne, but it would show she is someone who can manage the politics of the kingdom, and if she does it without loss of life even better, but you are right there is the risk that the people would despise this match as is what happened with Dareon II, that would be a risk rhaenyra would have to be willing to take. The only other way I could see her avoiding a succession war is by marrying Aegon. Otherwise I don't feasibly see rhaenyra avoiding a succession war.@@adaroez

I actually don't think he's a fool to remarry. He needs spares so that's why he remarried and started having children. Rhaenyra may be his heir, and future queen, but she's a woman who will have to bear heirs on her own. It's not such uncommon thing for women to die in childbirth (Rhaenyra's mother died this way, other queens have died this way in the Westeros history). Viserys was a fool to think that the realm was ready for a WOMAN (Queen) ruler; however. He should've consolidated the position by (I know this is EW), marrying Aegon to Rhaenyra. Yup. Gross af for our standard (the whole incest and age issue), but y'know, they're Targaryens. This way, it's forced them to rule together... The problem would be that Rhaenyra would be too 'old' to start having children. 15 yrs different, right? So if Aegon was 15-16 when he married Rhae, she'd be in her 30s to start having heirs/children...

The problem with irony, is not every woman gets it.

"Men would sooner put the realm to the torch, than see a woman ascend the Iron Throne." I'm sorry. Who was it that set off Wildfire to destroy the Great Sept of Baelor and everyone within and around it???? And who was it that rode a dragon and used his fire to burn most of King's Landing and the Red Keep to smoldering ruins???? Wasn't any man, I'll tell you that...... Rhaenys may be Queen Who Never Was, but she’s also Queen of Hindsight.

Rhaenys should have marry ASAP to have an adult male son by the time Viserys died. That would create huge problems for the Greens. Now they would have to deal with the son of the actual heir to the throne.

You mean Rheanyra not Rhaenys? Because Rhaenys was married to Corlys?

This is kinda funny considering in the future neither Cersei or Danny became queen of the realm, where the realm isn't in rubles.

The inconsistent writing for Rhaenys frustrates me. There are times when she’s smart, as shown here, and there are times when she grasps the idiot ball, hard.

The inserted commentary is too fast. Every word should get at least a 1/2 second.

Sigh. GRRM made up a whole world with dragons and magic and priests and Wild Men and giants and ice zombies. Why mysogyny had to be a major plot point I will never understand.

It's mostly showrunners desicion to focus on this subject instead of exploring the politics of Targaryen dynasty.

Because it was a plot line in the books? That despite Rheanyra being firstborn, she wasn't even considered because of her gender?

It's because of the time period the story has been written in. Just think about it aegon the conqueror was the middle child and visenya was the eldest yet it was aegon who became king and 300 years later people remember him as the conqueror, while his sisters are mentioned as an afterthought. He is widely remembered even though he didn't do it alone.
