UPDATE: We have found that the Arthur Imaging Inks have a slightly higher density than the Canon inks and work great with the iX6820 printer for printing Ikonart transparencies. You can find the inks on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B074WGMJ4G/
In today’s video I show you step-by-step exactly how I set up my Canon Pixma iX6820 printer in order to print high density film positives.
High quality artwork and high density film positives are both very important for faster washout and holding fine details when making Ikonart Stencils, so figuring out what print settings will give you the best film positive is a very important step in the process of making stencils.

This total noob can't thank you enough for such a clear and concise tutorial! So many questions answered, even though I'm using an ip8720 printer and Photoshop; virtually everything you discussed helped me move forward. Your approach to the settings looks to have solved the problems I'd been seeing. I'm involved with a DIY system using a layre UV LED strips for an exposure source to create screens for printing ceramic underglaze on greenware and bisque pieces. Should be an interesting project.

@@ikonartstencil I've continued to experiment with the prints and have found that visually (not tested yet with UV - just finishing my DIY UV light source) the darkest prints by far are with the printer set to manual color mgmt, Photo Paper Pro Platinum, Photoshop managing colors, Canon's PT2 profile and rendering set to saturated. I've been monitoring my ink levels and it looks like in this mode, only PGBK is used. So, pigment rather than the inks. I'm guessing/hoping that this is the most UV opaque setting. Further testing will tell... Thanks again for your video(s) (Not being a graphic artist by training or any other measure, your tutorials are very useful!)

These tips are great, and they work! One thing I've found: You do not get the same results printing from other applications, like Photoshop or Preview-Illustrator seems to work best. My recent print was raster artwork, not vector, so I initially export a TIFF and printed from Preview-not as good! So even if your work is raster, drop it onto an artboard in Illustrator and print from there-that's how you'll get the best results 👍🏻

Printer settings make all the difference!
@mistermastermind528
@mistermastermind528 Год назад
I needed this. These are things you don't normally understand with printing-different qualities among different printers and what they're capable of. It's still confusing because this feature has to be more readable in marketing when buying a printer. I used to think we needed the big printers to print clean images on different paper quality (especially glossy card stock). So this Canon printer does it as good as how paperback covers for books are printed?
@ikonartstencil
@ikonartstencil Год назад
I only use it to print B&W images to make our stencils, so I’m not sure about book covers.
@JacobHalton

This vid is very helpful! I'm on a mac though, and in my print preferences for the iX6820 I only see "Media: Auto Select / Photo / Envelope / Plain Paper". There also aren't other options for setting contrast etc. I'm getting some issues with flat black and I've tried things like changing it to rich black in the file, using only 100%K, printing from InDesign or PDF, and seems like it's somewhat random why it'll look muddled or not. I had one successful test print using just 100%K and printing from a PDF. The black was pretty grey but it was a nice smooth tone. Not sure how to recreate that or get a smoother tone with darker blacks. It seems like you've done a lot of tests so I was wondering if you have any ideas?
@ikonartstencil

I don’t have a Mac, so I can’t re-create this and I’m not sure what the answer is. Can you select the quality slider and move that all the way to high?

@@ikonartstencil Yup, I tried that and it helps. Actually I just realized yesterday if my file is in CMYK it comes out really crappy looking, but if I export a PDF as RGB and print that, it looks much closer to the version on screen
@sweeaught
@sweeaught 3 года назад
Hey, it sounds like you are not using the installed Canon driver, but instead the default Mac driver, that's why you are getting less customization in your print settings. Of course, you may have figured this out by now, but hopefully this will be helpful to someone. If you're printing over wifi, you will need to delete the printer from your list of printers, then re-add it. When you search for available printers, there should be one instance that uses "Bonjour" or AirPrint (which are Mac ... things) and another that comes up (a few seconds later, perhaps) that says something like "Canon IJ Something-or-other"-that's the one you want to add! If your situation isn't a wifi one, you might just have to google how to switch the driver you're using. Hope that helps!
@JacobHalton
@JacobHalton 3 года назад
@@sweeaught I think that's mostly right, but it seems that Canon actually has 2 drivers of their own for some reason? My girlfriend and I each downloaded a driver from their website and somehow she downloaded the IJ driver and I got the bonjour one. She had way more options for most things when printing, but strangely the "quality" setting doesn't let her change anything, and seems like it always prints to the highest quality while mine lets me choose, even though I can't make many other custom choices like color profiles etc.

Mirroring your artwork is optional, but I like to do it. That way when I expose my stencil I flip my artwork upside down so I can read it, and then the side I printed on is touching my stencil film. This isn’t a huge deal but if you have artwork with very fine details it helps create a better seal between your artwork and the stencil film so that no light can seep in under the edges.

If u need a total solid 100% pure black, just refill the CMY ink cartridges with BLACK INK. NOW u have all ink cartridges with 4 black and when you print on the film, u will HV a pure solid black☑️ just print it in CMYK mode...
@ikonartstencil
@ikonartstencil 3 года назад
Works great for businesses that only use their printer for this one purpose, but not if you want to continue using your printer for printing other stuff. If you do this you also have to setup your artwork as a blend of colors rather than 100% black so that it pulls from all the cartridges instead of 100% black, or again if you’re a screen printer or business you can run your art through RIP software like FilmMaker. If you don’t want to fill the cartridges yourself, Chromaline sells a black set of ink exactly meant for this purpose shop.chromaline.com/canon-pixma-ix6820-kit/

For Mac, i had to go to System Preferences>Printers & Scanners>click to select your printer>click the + on the bottom left of the dialogue box>click on your printer>in the Use: drop down menu, select your printer instead of Airdrop/AirPrint, this will make another version of your printer>click Add. Then go into Illustrator and go to print setup, you should now see all the options I am however struggling to get an opaque black. I've tried CMYK all 100%, K 100%, CMYK 60 40 40 100, RGB all 100%, but still no luck. Will try to export to PDF and RGB and see if that works.

A raster image is not different than a vector image at 100 percent magnification.
@ikonartstencil
@ikonartstencil Год назад
That is a bit misleading. They are definitely different, however if you mean that a raster image will also work, that is correct. If you have a high quality raster image at the size you want to print it, and you never need to scale it up, yeah, it will work. A lot of times people who use our system (at home crafters) have low quality raster images though (usually taken from Google or something like that) so that is why I try to explain the differences and importance of vector artwork.
